Anytime Fitness Melbourne CBD - Bourke Street VIC: Opinions
Positive experience: Great location - close to the tram and a reasonable range of equipment. All of the other reviews citing cleanliness and the air conditioning being turned off most of the time are accurate. I used this branch when I was travelling recently and was surprised that it was recently renovated, given the state of the bathrooms in particular. Oh, and the vending machine? Having the carbonated beverages at the top means that whoever buys one is going to have at least a third of it explode out of the top due to the tumble down - that is frustrating enough, but the shock pald upon finding that the vending machine is NOT refrigerated! So not only is the gym roasting from the air con not being on, you can't even get a cold beverage from the machine. It smacks of penny pinching? A shame, the other branches I went to during my visit to Melbourne were further away, but worth the additional distance due to these.
Negative experience: Very central gym with all the essential equipment. There's a great big area for floor exercises, which is a definite plus. The equipment is clearly well-used, but still functional. That said, the space seriously needs better ventilation. The air conditioning only kicks in after 8 AM, which makes early workouts uncomfortable. I usually use the stationary bicycle — unfortunately, it’s been left in what feels like the "naughty corner," with no airflow and stuck under a spotlight. Not ideal. Also, there was no one at the reception desk, and it looked like some cleaning had been neglected. Overall, it's convenient and has the esencial , but there’s definitely room for improvement in terms of air quality and cleaning.
Negative experience: I just had my worst training experience here; while I was doing some upper Chest pushing machine some guy with a Camouflage vest who wants to use the back side of this machine( could be use on both way)just ask me : man you take about 15 minutes on this machine when will you be done with a very rude attitude. I pushed 10 sets with 65kg on each side, I takes longer rest; but still I pushed for 10 sets, I didn’t sit there and doing nothing! And I told him frankly I am using heavy weights and I rest longer than others. He keeps complaining about me and he couldn’t use my weight otherwise he can offer me to share the use of it. This is definitely rude and unacceptable attitude, the gym is busy is not the reason I should wrap up and go and left you the machine to use! I doubted he is a racist! I am not a time waster and everyone in this gym should follow some rules and be nice and respect how others training routine is, when I finish my training and I wanna find someone to complaining about this issue I wait there for 10 minutes and didn’t see any staff to talk about this! I hope you contact me about this issue.
Fantastic experience: Maddy helped me alot when I had forgotten my gym gear in the office! It’s a really clean gym and very well equipped im looking forward to coming more often :)
Positive experience: The best CBD gym, clean and well maintained facilities make it feel like my home gym letting me workout on the weekdays. Only small issue is that some pin loaded machines have a few plates taken out so the max weight of the machines is lower than the same machine equivalent at my home gym. Bit of a problem for experienced lifters
Positive experience: It's very convenient. Central and close to transport. However it gets very crowded. Even during non peak is packed
Negative experience: Nice clean well maintained gym but once the staff go home they turn off the air con and damn the gym gets so damn hot it’s unbearable , anyone smelt an Indian whilst in a taxi ? Times that by 50 and you’ll see what I mean
Negative experience: Don’t come here, not enough toilets, toilets have no soap, very busy and missing crucial gym equipments.
Negative experience: Gym looks nice but when I was waiting to be let in to apply, there was no staff to let me in for over 30 mins even after I called the number in the front more than 3x
Positive experience: Doesn't has aircon
Fantastic experience: I signed up to this new gym because it’s super close to my home and I can train with my trainer romy. The location of the gym is really good because it’s close to the tram station and very easily accessible, it’s 24/7 as well so you can train anytime you want. The facility is really nice too, it’s newly opened so everything is clean and new, I can also see that every member is looking after the environment as well cause the equipment is always tidy and clean. The staff and the member are very friendly and eager to help, I really enjoy working out there! Shout out to my trainer Romy, you’re the best!
Negative experience: When the gym allows more people in than the entire equipment they have. What a joke I posted this 4 months ago Collins St was already done renovating 5 months ago. So don't give me that shit.
Hi Stephen, at the time our sister club Collins Street was temporarily closed for renovations which is why the gym was so busy - we had signs up to let our members know we would be experiencing higher visits than usual during this time.
Negative experience: In dire need of better air conditioning.
Positive experience: This gym is tucked into Goldsbrough Village and used to be the South Pacific Health Club. It’s new, but you wouldn’t guess it from the state of cleanliness. I put my personal items on the floor during a set, and when I picked them up, they had a fine layer of dust, like they’d been on an archaeological dig. You can see the dust on the equipment—it’s basically a workout and a sneeze-fest all in one. The hip adductors machine? It’s auditioning for a horror movie with its loud squeaking. A little oil or maintenance would go a long way here. The gym itself is small, with an arrow-shaped floor plan that makes it feel even more cramped. I went at 7-8am, and it was a game of musical chairs to get on equipment. You either wait or channel your inner hawk, ready to swoop in the moment something frees up. On the bright side, the high usage means people are actually wiping down equipment, so kudos to the members for keeping it hygienic. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the bathrooms. They’re overdue for a clean—like, twice or three times a day overdue. I went to the toilet and found no toilet paper, which really added a “survival skills” element to my workout. Would be great if AF admin cleaned the gym as thoroughly as the members do. Three stars because I got my workout done (kinda… I couldn’t finish one cuz too many members not enough machines), but it came with a side of fussing and dusting.
Fantastic experience: Clean gym with a good amount of equipment and great staff. Paul’s a genuine/helpful character who screen shotted all my gym visits as the system wouldn’t allow it - Cheers , Paul.
Hi Kurtis, thanks for your review! :)
Negative experience: Way too small and too crowded
Negative experience: Never answer the phone, increased price without informing me...absolute dump
Negative experience: Before making a 6 month membership deal I was not informed that if you finish the contract you must pay 1 more extra month. Even you live in a remote area and its not your fault there is no more gyms nearby. Pretty bad ...
Negative experience: Decent gym, a bit cramped in the weight area with the cardio area being wide open. Most of the equipment seemed new. Main problem was the thermostat was far too high. Turn it down a few degrees for a reasonable workout temp! It's up the escalator on the mezzanine level.
Negative experience: They sell a used access card for 90 dollars by saying that it is free for 1 month for your friend who becomes a 6 month member. They say you will get your money back at the end of the membership and then you cannot find anyone to talk to. The representative even blocks you from emails!!
Hello, you have the wrong gym. We don't sell used card and never have, and we don't have a 6-month option. Please revise your review and check the location of where you signed up.
Positive experience: This brand new gym is really clean and nice. It can get really busy specially in the evenings. The only tricky thing is to find it, it’s located in the Goldsbrough Village. Finding the gym was harder than dealing with a boss in Dark Souls
Negative experience: Gym has a good vibe. But the air cons sucks. Its so hot and there are no fans as well. Please fix it, after 2 exercises it feels like just to leave.
Negative experience: Gym is good , nice and clean and customer service is decent. However when being sold on signing up I was told I could cancel anytime .. hinting at 1 week notice but when cancelling was told I need to give a months notice (it’s probably in the contract). Also when the anytime fitness I used to go to closed and they transferred my membership they didn’t pause the membership like I asked. So felt like I’ve lost money for nothing.
Hi Jai, thank you for your feedback. I think there may have been a misunderstanding as all our memberships require 30 days' notice this is stipulated in the contract. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected]
Positive experience: Very spacious and new materials. Also very nice staff that showed me around
Positive experience: Plus: good leg machine (booty builder, hack squat, calf machine) - not seen them in other AF gyms. Cons: - Really cramped in the free weight zones. Rest of the gym is spacious. Not good of the space. - It’s insanely hot in this gym. No fans and lack of aircon. It’s mad how hot it’s in there.
Hi Olger, thank you for your feedback. We have recently renovated the free weights area so there is more space and we have had our air conditioner unit fixed too. Please email us if you have any questions

Fantastic experience: Great place, super friendly staff and awesome environment
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff, super friendly
Negative experience: Predatory conduct, price gauged from $36 per fortnight to $46 in one year, and charge one month fees after cancellation. (Update jan 31) these guys are still pulling money out of my account t me cancelling my membership)
Positive experience: Good gym, has machines that don’t have the others, but the this leg machine has the seat twisted and that’s make your body get a bad position and wrong training. They must to fix that urgently
Fantastic experience: Fabulous gym in CBD very new spotless friendly gym for a workout. Really awesome - one comment - maybe a ceiling fan or two could help with air circulation? See you next time soon
Positive experience: Gym itself is decent, main issue is non existent air conditioning & sunlight blinding you in the free weights area. If management reads this, increase the air con, add a few fans & tint the windows more & the gym will be solid.
Negative experience: This Gym was the same gym moved from Queen Street AF so you can check the rating via Google plus minors some nuance. I enjoy gyms and I have been with Anytime Fitness for more than 6 years + 2 years with ZAP before that, all in different cities and branches and this branch is why I choose to leave AF. If this is the gym downstairs maybe it could still be your choice. This rating is mostly for the branch management because I believe most people run a gym should promote user engagement and happy community instead of always priorizing commercial: 1. lack of communication (if they accidentally left you behind in email distributions, it's your fault) 2. lack of respect to what's done through verbal communication (you need to write it down - just like any business comms) 3. if you asking for things they don't have an answer, they choose to ghost you Anyways, plenty of gyms nearby offers better value. Good luck on your training!
Fantastic experience: This particular Anytime Fitness branch is the latest and greatest in Melbourne CBD. I believe it just opened earlier this year, and is basically the new location of the previous Queen Street branch. This is located closer to the working district of the CBD. The downside of that is it can get very busy after working hours. That is the only negative thing I can point out about AF Bourke Street. In terms of the gym itself, it is very spacious, with the weights and machines spaced far and away from the cardio machines. The cardio machines are located in a lower area, and has an adequate amount of treadmills, elliptical machines, stair climbers, etc. The machines (Hammer Strength) are all one could ever need. They have this nice blacked out look as well, which does add to the pleasant ambiance of the gym. This branch has both the seated and lying leg curl machines, so one can easily train hamstrings to his/her liking. There is also a linear hack squat, as well as the usual leg press machine. You will never run out of ways to train legs here. Add to that the fact that there are 4 deadlift platforms / squat racks, so waiting to use any of them would be significantly less than having just 1 or 2. Plates are adequate in amount, and I would only see it being a problem if a handful of people are lifting very heavy all at the same time. There are plenty of bathrooms, dressing rooms, and shower rooms, although they are less spacious inside than those found in other branches. There are three stations for wipes to clean equipment: one near the cardio area, and two near the machines and free weights. The staff are welcoming and professional when it comes to their work. One additional minor gripe I have is that their air-conditioning does not seem to be working adequately to keep the place cool. Working out during Australian summers can get quite hot and drain my energy quicker than I would like. Overall, this is a branch I would highly recommend and personally go to as frequently as I can! My only recommendation to have the best experience is to try and go outside of peak hours, to ensure that excessive waiting times are avoided.
Fantastic experience: Recently relocated from their old Queen st site, all new equipment & great location. Friendly knowledgeable staff, & a great atmosphere. Highly recommended!!!
Fantastic experience: Neat, clean, minimalist design. One of the better examples of a new AF club opening / club refresh I have seen. Love the blacked out Hammer Strength machines. Reminds me of the elite Equinox gym in the U.S. 5 stars.
Fantastic experience: Great gym and amazing views. The gym is spacious and the trainers are all friendly while being superbly hardworking. The weights are new and the equipment smells fresh as the summer breeze by the beach side.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym, good layout and clean new equipment, love it
Fantastic experience: This new franchise under scrutiny is unequivocally extraordinary, leaving an indelible impression that resonates with the words of the renowned Aristotle, who once professed, "Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution." The luminous ambiance is nothing short of immaculate, akin to how Leonardo da Vinci once mused, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." The exceptional lighting plays a pivotal role in elevating the gym's aesthetic appeal, casting the entire space in a flattering, pristine glow that beckons not only to fitness enthusiasts but to photographers seeking the perfect shot. For those in pursuit of the ideal Instagram-worthy photo or a visual representation of their fitness journey, this establishment offers an exquisite canvas. As Ansel Adams, the legendary landscape photographer, aptly noted, "You don't take a photograph, you make it." The gym's lighting and well-placed mirrors come together to create a picturesque setting that inspires the creation of compelling photographic narratives. Furthermore, the gym's array of modern, top-tier machines and equipment stands as a testament to its commitment to excellence. As Steve Jobs once articulated, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." The gym undoubtedly positions itself as a leader in the fitness industry by providing its patrons with cutting-edge tools for their physical well-being. The aesthetics of this place are inextricably tied to its functionality, creating an environment that is as pleasing to the senses as it is beneficial to physical health. In the words of Coco Chanel, "Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself." This gym chooses to be itself, offering a setting that not only looks great but, quite fittingly, smells great too, as it exhibits a harmonious blend of cleanliness and a welcoming atmosphere. In summary, this gym is an exemplar of fitness excellence, embodying the wisdom of great minds like Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Ansel Adams, and Steve Jobs. It isn't just a workout space; it's a sanctuary for those who appreciate the confluence of artistry and functionality, where fitness aspirations are accompanied by a visual and olfactory symphony of delight.
Positive experience: I like the new gym because it’s a lot prettier than the other gyms in the city. The problem is the sun is very bright through the windows, sometimes so blinding I can’t do some exercises. There’s also no air conditioning, so sometimes I’m giving out early on sets from exhaustion rather than muscle failure.
