Our comment from FitFit Australia about Virgin Active Collins Street:
Welcome to Virgin Active Collins Street, a premier gym facility in Melbourne that offers an exceptional fitness experience. With a wide range of equipment and facilities, including a spacious pool, sauna, and various classes, members appreciate the overall quality and cleanliness of the gym. Many visitors have praised the friendly and supportive staff, notably personal trainers and the reception team, for their dedication to providing outstanding customer service.
Despite the positive feedback, some members have expressed concerns regarding cleanliness in certain areas and the gym's pricing structure. Overcrowding during peak hours has also been mentioned, alongside specific issues with equipment maintenance and the strictness of class entry policies. Some users felt the operating hours could be more accommodating, particularly for those with busy schedules.
In summary, Virgin Active Collins Street stands out for its excellent facilities and friendly staff, although improvements in cleanliness, peak time management, and communication regarding operating hours could enhance member satisfaction even further.
Virgin Active Collins Street: Opinions
Fantastic experience: The best gym in Melbourne bar none. Lots of Kiwis work here.. Coincidence?
Fantastic experience: Probably the best gym I’ve ever been to! Facilities are excellent. Was visiting from overseas and the team here were absolutely top class; including sorting entry via my overseas Virgin membership.
Positive experience: Decent gym but given the weekly fee, a few things could improve to make it better value. Cleanliness being the main one and quality of some equipment (reformer beds and spin bikes). Last few times at Pilates, I found the floor under my bed wasn’t clean so was inhaling dust as we faced down during exercises where the bed pushed away. I noticed also that some club members leave tissue etc at the machines (please clean up after yourselves). Spin bikes are hit and miss, some of the adjustments change while in use (probably loose over time). Used to enjoy Yoga but now with so many mats squished into one room, you’re less than half a meter away from the next person (and their foot)… not a fan. Instructors are good.
Fantastic experience: You get what you pay for
Positive experience: Joined just before Bourke St closed... Collins St is a good looking gym. Much cleaner than St Kilda Baths. The pool, which I thought I was going ro spend the rest of my life doing endless laps is sadly too cold to enjoy especially if you have any musculoskeletal injuries.or learning to swim. Being an Aussie level swimmer, I usually wont swim inside as you get too hot. The freezing water seizes we up in a few laps, even after boiling yourself in the sauna. So I have to swim and pay elsewhere. It has become very expensive and it was already to start with. Do not take your phone into the pool or spa area thinking you can answer a quick important call or listen to a book. Some staff are Perfectly normal but some militant ones have really offended people and obviously ruined their day. It is very upsetting to see grown adults being treated so rudely when nobody has complained or cares. This is not a social gym. Everyone just keeps to themselves. Being allowed to listen to a book in the spa would be great, especially for those of us who are not neurotypical. Having to see people treated in such a manner makes me very anxious to come there as it really upsets me.
Negative experience: Lack of humanity. Was super excited to take my friend to the new fancy gym I signed up to. Arrived early. Reception told me to show him around but they didn’t tell me how strict classes are with time of entry. Didn’t realize we arrived at the door of the reformer Pilates studio 1 min and 10 seconds late. Got refused entry despite explaining we are both new. They are so strict on entry but cancelled my Friday morning boxing class 10 minutes before it started. Thanks
Negative experience: Don’t use your gym mailing list to advertise your alcoholic products part of Virgin wine. Gym members should not be receiving that kind of tone-deaf advertising. We invest heavily in our health and wellbeing. Some basic target audience analysis would have made this obvious to the marketing team.
Negative experience: They increase their prices regularly with nothing in return. The club has gone down hill and the prices are crazy.
Positive experience: Love this gym but super curious when the rock climbing wall comes back. It’s the reason I chose this gym and I miss getting up there! I am worried it will no longer be serviced. Would love to know here is possible. Other than that - great gym.
Negative experience: Bad staff named Gabby. No customer service, unprofessional, rude and turned me away! I walked in excited to see the place but she rudely declined
Negative experience: Worst gym experience in Melbourne from a lady named Gabby. 'karen' by true definition. A gym should be a fun and happy and welcoming environment, not in this instance
Positive experience: Great gym. The only thing that is a drawback is it closes so early. If they just opened one hour later it would be far more accessible. Eventually might need to find a gym that’s open later to accommodate busy lifestyle
Positive experience: A good gym overall. Facilities are nice (one of the only gyms with a good sauna/spa area), lots of classes, decent range of equipment, and a pleasant enough space that you’re actually happy enough to keep going back. My main issue with this gym are the hours. Peak times are busy, as is to be expected (particularly after closing the Bourke Street branch), so I try and avoid these as you’re likely to be waiting for equipment or a spot in the sauna. Going after the evening peak means that I’m rushing my gym time to try and make it to the sauna/spa that they close half an hour prior to the gym itself. But even then it’s usually packed as everyone else is also rushing to use these spaces before they shut them down. They could easily push closing time out by one hour (which would be great) and I’m sure it’ll still be busy. Weekend closing times are a bit of a joke with opening hours meaning it’s impossible to head to the gym in the mornings, late afternoons, or evenings. Other issues are of course the price which is very steep, particularly considering the short opening hours where you can get your value for money. I’ve also experienced issues with cleanliness in the changing rooms - dirty floors, messy toilets, mouldy showers, bugs stuck to the ceiling, and even a cockroach. They also desperately need to replace or at least repair and oil the sauna seating - it’s rickety, sweat-stained, and smelly (most people don’t follow the ‘towels under bums’ rule). A cold plunge pool would also be ideal, which was something the Bourke Street branch had over Collins Street.
Thanks for the review, Ben! We love that we make you happy to keep coming back. Whilst we have seen more members attending the club recently, you'll be pleased to know we have increased our class timetable, added more spots in classes and added more equipment to ensure our members and guests have the best experience. Additionally, we are reviewing our club opening hours and our pool and spa now remains open up until 15 minutes prior to closure. This ensures everyone can still get into the showers before we close, and our team into the sauna to give it a good scrub. We have our internal and external cleaning teams in the change rooms each day and night, but we'll continue to improve our standards to change your 3 star experience to 5 stars. We're keen to touch base directly, but couldn't find a record of you in our membership system. In any case, we'd love to speak with you more about your experience, please reach out to [email protected] -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: I always have an exceptional time at Virgin Active, but I must highlight the incredible customer service provided by Gabi. From the moment I walk in, Gabi goes above and beyond to ensure I feel welcome and comfortable. Her generosity and willingness to assist with every request truly stands out! Working in customer service, you inevitably encounter some negative, sad and unhappy people, but Gabi shines through it all with grace and positivity, which is such a testament to your team! Highly recommend Virgin Active, you have a great bunch of a people working for you!
Negative experience: poor ole manager scott is useless...
Sorry to hear you feel that way, but appreciate you for taking the time to leave feedback. You obviously care very deeply about your time at Collins Street, and happy to address any of your concerns in club. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Best gym I have been in Melbourne
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome. Very friendly staff. Great equipment, course and facilities.
Positive experience: The gym is great—spacious and with lots of equipment. The pool area is pretty big, with a spa, sauna—they have it all—for a bit more $$$ than most other gyms around.
Negative experience: Love the gym but had a bad experience with the sound bath. Two people were snoring in the class, one on the left and another on the right. Talked to the instructor and she said you just had to deal with it. This is a sound bath, not a snoring bath. Like other studios, you should expressly prohibit people from snoring or have assistant coming in to gently squeeze people's ankle to help them wake up so they do not disturb the other participants.
Positive experience: Virgin closed the Bourke Street gym and asked current members to move to the club on Collins street...however the times for the weekend are different as it starts later....no information was provided of this change as well...this time is not suitable for those who have work on weekends....clearly service is dropping as well as the communication process Many thanks for your reply Scott. I reiterate there was no communication that the hours of operation are different compared to Bourke street. Your response has sidestepped of varying the opening hours on the weekend. As Virgin Collins Street is the only club in Melbourne city now it would be appreciated that some serious thought be given to move the opening time forward by 1 hour to 8am on weekends. Sydney has a number of Virgin clubs and some with early starts on the weekend.
Thanks for the feedback, Sid. Rest assured we posted signage within the club and emailed all of our Bourke Street members of the changes. Additionally, since the Bourke Street closure, we have added more classes and are adding more equipment to Collins Street to accommodate our new members. As for our operating hours, we're closely monitoring our attendance throughout the week and will review the need for additional changes as necessary. Don't worry tho, I'll be sure to include your feedback. Please feel free to reach out in club should there be anything further we can do for you. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: As a customer, I expect honesty and transparency from any service provider, especially when it comes to my hard-earned money. However, Virgin Active seems to think they can just help themselves to my funds without so much as a courtesy heads-up. This experience has left me feeling cheated and disrespected as a customer. It's appalling that a company of such stature would stoop to such low customer service standards.I strongly advise others to think twice before engaging with Virgin Active unless they want to risk falling victim to their unethical business practices.
We're with you on that, Negin! We strive to do our very best to be Straight Up and to deliver heart felt service to all our members and guests. Rest assured, Virgin Active will only debit membership dues as per our agreed membership terms. However, if we get it wrong, we'll be sure to rectify it as soon as possible. No sweat! Best option is to reach out to us either in club or via [email protected] and we'll be sure sort this out for you. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym. If you are interested in personal training, I highly recommend Jacinto Cambron. He's experienced, flexible, patient and full of knowledge. Big shout out to Jordan as well. Strength, conditioning and weight is miles better in 12 months.
Yes Michael!!! Well done on getting after your training and your 12 month improvement. We're so happy to hear you enjoy your time here. We'll pass on your feedback to Jordan and Jacinto... we think they're great, too! Thank you for the review! Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: I loved this gym so much! Best gym in Melbourne by a mile. Unfortunately I was only able to visit for a couple days because I live in Perth but wow. The staff is amazing and the classes are the best ones I’ve ever attended. Shoutout to the person who showed me around and took their time knowing I’m only staying in Melbourne for a week.
We're so pleased we made your visit enjoyable! Doesn't matter if you're here for a day or ongoing, at all times we want to ensure you have an irresistible experience at Virgin Active Collins Street. Looking forward to having you back again soon. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: The membership suspension policy really deserves a review. A masterclass in daylight robbery. It's 2024, this is the most expensive gym in the country, and STILL, this is how it works: • Membership can't be paused for less than a fortnight. • If pausing, the paused days MUST begin and end on their fortnightly direct debit dates. • Must confirm intent to pause at least 5 days in advance of a direct debit window. • If you somehow jump through all those hoops, the admin cost = $7.50 per week. None of this makes sense or belongs in the 21st century. When a local single-staffed yoga studio can outclass your payment system, that says a lot doesn't it? Since the Bourke Street branch closed, this gym is already turning into an overcrowded mosh pit. And this refusal to modernize a prehistoric payment system is a clear indicator of where priorities lie. Do better.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and to provide us feedback regarding our freeze policy. Our freeze policy allows you to take a short bit of time away from the club without the penalty of cancelling your membership or paying full membership dues. Whilst we only need 3 days notice (the Sunday before the fortnightly membership cycle) to make any changes to your membership, it seems like we haven't lived up to your expectations in this instance. Rest assured, as we welcome more members, we will continue review our class timetable and space to support all of our members and guests. Should you have any concerns or if there is anything further we can do, I encourage you to reach out in club or drop us an email at [email protected] -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: I liked the gym's space and equipment, but had a bad experience with my contract. I signed for a 12-month discount, but they raised prices in April without warning. They blamed me for not reading the fine print. With one branch closing, they are pushing everyone to use the other although they were reducing their service , but wouldn't let me cancel without a 300$ cancellation fee. Lesson learned to read contracts carefully.
Thanks for the feedback Sadaf and we're pleased you enjoyed our space. We pride ourselves on being Straight Up at Virgin Active, and as such, all promotion discounts on our long termer memberships are included as the first point on our membership agreements that are emailed to our members immediately upon sign up. Whilst we do have an early termination fee, we never ask our members to pay out the remainder of their long-term membership should they wish to cancel. We hope to welcome you back again in future should we be the right fit for you. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: Probably the best gym in Melbourne in terms of equipment, facilities, and interior design. The female receptionist who works during the morning / early afternoon shift on weekdays is very friendly and helpful too. ( And so is Gio the personal trainer, even though I am not his client) My main concern is the gym getting very crowded during the evening peak hour ( 5pm to 7pm). On certain weekdays during lunchtime, it can get pretty busy too. I really wish the Bourke St branch was still open. (And I still miss that branch very much)
Don't forget we also have the best members, Marcus . Thank you for our feedback, and love to hear you think Talia and Gio are fantastic. Rest assured, as we continue to welcome more members, we will review and increase our timetable and gym space to accommodate the increase in demand. We really appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback. Please don't hesitate to reach out in club should there be anything we can do for you. We look forward to seeing you in club. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Adrian the duty manager and coach at Collins St Virgin Active really knows his stuff!! He helped me improve my agility and push ups. He's always happy to help everyone with equipment and have a chat. Adrian called me, as the duty manager, to discuss the survey I filled in and he was professional and lovely. He gave me great news of the gym improvements too. He is a knowledgeable and great asset to Collins St Virgin Active. Thanks for your help Adrian.
Oh stop it, you'll make us blush. Thanks for the 5 star review, Caz! -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: The staff are great, gym equipment are OK. The business is designed to prioritise profit over customer satisfaction. Super quick to chargeyour account, super slow to put your membership payment on hold like when you are goingon a trip or something. So, you'd better call them well in advance if you need to put a hold on your membership/payments.
Thanks for letting us know our staff are doing great, Ash! We think you're great, too! To make any changes to your membership, we only ask for 3 days notice prior to the fortnightly membership dues. Please feel free to reach out in club or contact [email protected] if there has been any issues and we'll be sure to jump right on it to rectify for you. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a client over the past 7 years and I’ve been so motivated and happy. The best gym in town for sure. The equipments are brand new and there are a huge variety of classes and activities. The team is composed by amazing personal trainers who make a fantastic environment for everyone. I absolutely love it!
Seeing you come in over the past 7 years leaves us very proud to have you here, Felippe! Thank you for living happily ever active! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: Great and exciting facility for a newbie. Would be great if possible to extend weekend hours for those working in the city.
Thanks for the 4 star review, Eliza-May! We're so happy to hear you love it here so much you want to come more often. Allow us to look into it. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Best gym in central Melbourne! Great facilities, clean, quiet pool for swimming and quality equipment.
Love that you love it here, Nicholas! Don't forget we have our amazing instructors, too! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: This gym is awesome! I spent 4 hours here enjoying all the facilities!! The staff are so welcoming and friendly. Which if you are new to gym it is a massive thing!! Alanah was so helpful in showing me around and explaining everything to me which was awesome the staff are different to what most gyms usually have. Thus making the experience that much more enjoyable.
Oh stop it, Grace... you're awesome!! We're absolutely thrilled you loved your visit, and Alanah was very excited to hear your feedback. Looking forward to having you back in club again, soon! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Pretty big floor space, lots of equipment. So far so good.
We'll do our best to keep living up to your expectations, Hayden. Thanks for the 5-Stars! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Amazing GRID class experience with Josh, 100 times better than any GRID class I’ve done in London Clubs! The facilities are great, only improvement could be the reformer studio beds need upgrading
Woohoo... Go us! Thanks for the feedback, Natasha! We know our friends in London can bring it with their Grid classes so your feedback has left us (and especially Josh), super thrilled! We hope you have enjoyed your visit and looking forward to having you in club again soon. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: Over the past few years, have seen very little new equipment or machines. There's clearly scope to replace old/outdated ones barely anyone uses. Opening hours have gotten later (I recently rocked up at 8:15am only to find out they had sneakily changed opening time to 9am). Closing times have gotten earlier. All while membership prices have gone up (well over $200pm). There used to be a Cafe in the gym, that's gone too. Overall, in decline.
Thank you for the review, although it looks like we have missed the mark. Additionally, thank you for being a member with us for a long time to be able to remember the cafe, yet with all the amazing retail food outlets downstairs, we said goodbye to our cafe at Collins Street about 5 years ago. We can confirm however, our opening time on weekends has always been 9am at Collins Street (tho our friends at Bourke Street extended their opening hours to 8am on weekends a couple of years back). We encourage you to come back again as we recently did a complete refurbishment of our Boxing and Grid Studio, including brand new equipment such as water filled tear drop bags, gloves, new kettlebells, dumbbells, Technogym skillmills, and more! We look forward to having you in club again soon. Please feel free to stop past reception or drop us an email at [email protected] and we can discuss your feedback. We'd love to turn your experience around! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: I had a bad experience on my first day, one of the members shouted at me for sitting on the towel in the sauna cause the Asian woman had a bad day. The staff member guy in the sauna /spa area told me no phones when I was gonna call my friend, also a guy naked in the shower waved his private parts at me and smiled for 30 seconds. Most odd gym ever.
Thank you for the feedback, Tam. We tried to reach out to you directly, but we don't seem to have a record of you attending Collins Street. We would love to learn more about your experience. Please feel free to stop past reception or email [email protected] -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: It costs a lot of money here, but it doesn't fix anything that's broken. The device in this picture has been left unattended for almost 2 months. The dehydrator broke in the past, but it didn't fix it for 3 months. There's one, and I have to dehydrate my wet swimsuit with my hands every day. Let's do a good job.
Thank you for the review. Rest assured the Leg Press machine pictured, along with the other two Leg Press machines we have in club, is up and running. We understand that it can be frustrating when a piece of our equipment is having a break, and we work closely with our suppliers to get it back up and running as speedily as possible. Please feel free to reach out to [email protected] if you have any further feedback. In the meantime, thank you for living Happily Ever Active. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Best gym workout I have ever tried here in Melbourne. Thank you team! The classes a especially the trainers are helpful. The front staff and my orientation went so well. As a casual visitor I am always left rejuvenated and pleased with the service.
Thanks for coming to visit! We loved having you here and looking forward to having you back! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Talia is so lovely and makes my day each day with her banter :)
Thanks for the Feedback, Elena! We agree...Talia's banter is one of the many reasons to come in each morning! See you again, soon. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Perhaps the best gym I have found in Australia thus far, highly recommend from yoga, to swimming to weights and classes, has great amenities.
Oh stop it, Nathanael! You're making us blush! Thank you for living happily ever active! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: Love the entire space, and the surrounding areas. It feels alot newer than the bourke street branch, if only this place had the cold pool then it would be 5/5
Oh tell us about, Mikhail! How nice would that be. We do have crushed ice for our sauna-goers, otherwise our members can duck down to Bourke Street for the plunge pool. Looking forward to having you back again soon. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Visited from Sydney. Nice and spacious for a city gym. Very impressive.
We love that you enjoyed your visit, Steven! We think you should visit us more often! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Gorgeous gym. The team members are always bright, helpful, and supportive. The facilities are well maintained and the classes are great - accurate for experience levels and well-suited vibes for the class type, from yoga to kickboxing. Highly recommended. Thanks team! High five
Thank you, Sarah! We'll keep bringing you the high-5's in class! See you again, soon! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Very nice staff , and very good friendly people. Equipment and facilities are excellent. I have quit my 20 year gym membership in Brunswick and travel to the city everyday to virgin active. I’ve had nothing but progress and success since .
And don't forget our very friendly members like yourself, Fernando! We love seeing your progress! Amazing! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: Staff and coaches on site are very friendly and helpful, classes, equipments and facilities are fairly good. While the system is so bad. I asked the reception to terminate my PT program, and double checked the next day, but I still got charged for the following bill. Another time my partner asked to pausing the bills for her overseas trip and she still got charged somehow. My coach left Virgin while there was still one credit left. An email sent to me to ask if I would like to use it, I asked if I can get refunded for it, otherwise I am happy to take it with another coach. Two weeks past there is no follow up yet. Their payment system is one of the worst I ever seen. Extremely slow for updates and it somehow generates tiny fee like $0.01, and your account is shown as overdue.
Fantastic experience: I visited the Collins St Virgin while on a work trip. Adrian from member experience was incredibly hospitable. I did Yoga Align with Arti S and it was exactly what I needed after a full two days of meetings. She had great ways of explaining the technique, was very calm and I felt completely relaxed and restored after. Thanks everyone for the great experience.
Amazing feedback, Miriam! We passed on your feedback to the team and it made there day! Looking forward to having you visit again on your next work trip! -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Great location and facilities, this gym is clean and well stocked with everything you could want from a gym. Was just visiting the city for a few days but if I lived locally I'd definitely sign up.
Thanks for visiting and giving us such a great review, El Capitan! Looking forward to having you visit us again, soon. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: Very big gym, with all the main machines. They have a pool and sauna, and special (keypad free) lockers. It can be confusing to get around the place. The lady at the reception was lovely and very friendly.
Thanks for the review Nandu, love that you enjoyed your visit. We can't wait to have you back again soon. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: Phone Line is busy for 20 min ican't get a hold of anyone. This is terrible..after your reply. Still not working
Sorry you can't get through to us, Steve. We're ready to help you out with what ever we can.Our phone number at here at Collins Street is 03 9206 9120. Looking forward to chatting with you-Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym and facility. Front staff are fantastic. Highly recommended.
We're so chuffed that you love it here, Jonty. Looking forward to having you in the club again soon. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: as customer that plan my off days due working longer hrs please keep website updated your website as state your operating is until 9pm but apparently not on public holidays..what a waste of time on my off day
Hi Roger, Sorry that you couldn't get your workout in on the public holiday. You can find all of our hours, including public holidays, advertised on our website: https://www.virginactive.com.au/locations/collins-street We love that you wanted to train with us on a public holiday and we'd love to to see you in the club a bit more so have credited your account with 2 x extra visits. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Hygiene, a lots of options for classes, beautiful facilities and friendly place
Thanks for the 5 star review, Ulzii! We're thrilled you're living happily ever active! -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: What would’ve been a great fitness club ruined by rude customer service from the front desk staff. Numerous work colleagues have cancelled memberships and moved to other clubs in the city.
Hi Tim, Thanks for the feedback - clearly it seems we missed the mark on your front of house experience. We tried to see what time you come in so we could follow up our team with some training, but it appears you're not on our membership system. Would love to learn a lot more about your experience, so do please email us at [email protected] so we can improve your experience. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: Beware of fee structures and ask for confirmation of what’s spoken over the phone in writing! I called to cancel my membership as I explained I struggled with structuring my own workouts and was switching to another gym with functional classes. They offered me a free month and a free personal training to see if it worked for me BUT THEY NEVER MENTION THAT MY CANCELLATION WOULDNT BE PROCESSED. At this point I am sure this omission was deliberate, as when I tried speaking to them on the phone they insist “it was a miscommunication” and they can’t give me a refund. I didn’t use the gym once in this period.
Negative experience: Staff can sometimes be rude when enforcing some of the rules - especially ludicrous ones like forcing you to sit on a towel in the sauna. If this keeps on i’ll probably cancel my membership. Paying $50 a week to routinely get told off makes no sense to me.
We totally get it, Jack. No one likes to feel like they have done something wrong. Yet due to hygienic reasons, in the dry sauna, if you sit or lay down, the body should rest on a towel. On your way to your next sauna session, stop by front of house and you can pick up a towel. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: The facilities are nice and the gym itself and the workers have a good vibe, but some of the class instructors have a bit of a snooty attitude that can be off putting and makes the atmosphere in classes not that welcoming. You have to pick and choose the instructor a bit.
Hi Paul, We think you have a good vibe, too! As they say, your vibe attracts your tribe! Thanks for the feedback - we'll continue to work on this as we want to make sure all of our classes are welcoming, engaging, safe, exciting and irresistible. Feel free to reach out to us in club to provide any further feedback. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: Gym was nice but, one of the gym staff/ trainer was very rude. Stealing equipment from my workout and even bumping into me, didn't even apologize one bit. But every other staff were great. Felt kind of terrible after that experience since the membership is 50$ a week, it definitely wasn't worth it.
We want to ensure everyone is welcome at Virgin Active. Young, old, fit, unfit...it's all good. Yet it seems we haven't met your expectations here, Mugan. We tried to find you on our membership system to directly follow up on your feedback, but have no record of you as a member or guest. We'd love to turn your experience around, so please reach out to [email protected] -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: This is hands down one of the coolest gyms I have ever tried. They have everything I would ever consider needing and more. The staff are really nice and the facilities are cared for. They have a rock climbing wall, pool, spa, sauna, yoga, reformer pilates plus a lot of the machines count your reps (thank youuuu). They are expensive but you get what you pay for in terms of facilities and extras. I wish they had more of these gyms around the country so I could have a membership.
We're so chuffed you enjoyed your visit Celeste. Looking forward to you dropping in again soon. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: Have been a member since 2016. Used to like this club but over the years it's been slowly heading downhill. Facilities are average at best. Not to mention staff are unhelpful and rude at many occasions. Some staff are very condescending they feel they can speak to you in any manner they want in front of other people. Not worth the price, especially with current management. When members leave and new members joining are slow then staff will be nice to win you over but once you join they're attitude changes real quick. Prices also got hiked up service is average at best, showers and bathrooms are not the best some showers are even closed off meaning everyone is using the same showers. lockers and locker rooms are filthy not to mention hair appliance and ironing boards. 1 poorly located fridge not even much choice and apple Macs that are from the 90s that are not even connected to the internet. Joke of a club especially in the CBD. Wouldn't recommend joining or signing up from Eli
Hi Brad, thank you so much for the feedback. We wanted to reach out directly, but couldn't find your name, or any Brad that has been a member since 2016 at Collins Street, in our membership system. Rest assured, our Dyson hair dryers in our change rooms are cleaned daily, and all our showers are open for all our members and guests to use. In any case, it seems we missed the mark so please do not hesitate to reach out to [email protected] so we can understand your feedback further. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: Been a member here for 18 months or so, excellent facilities, friendly staff. Falls short in premium/business side of things. I asked for some help printing a couple of documents to save me a trip in to the office after a workout and they refused; as is their right. But for how much you pay, and the level of service they should represent for the price point not really good enough.
Hi Sam, Thanks for the feedback. No doubt being able to print something for you would have been incredibly convenient. You're sport on, and rest assured, to improve the premium/business side of things, we are working on a more functional co-work space in the near future. In the meantime, feel free to reach out via [email protected] if there is anything else we can help with. -Scott, Club General Manager @ Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Great gym definitely worth the money. The pool, spa and sauna area is a great bonus. The staff have been pretty amazing, everyone I've interacted with has been super friendly I would absolutely recommend this gym.
We think you've been pretty amazing too, Brooke! Looking forward to having you in club again soon. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Luxury spa and gym facilities and Best Pilates class ever with Emily! I left feeling strong, fit, and sooo relaxed! Love the sparkling water on tap too! John was super friendly and helpful when he booked me in as well. Great experience all round!
Negative experience: I have been paying a premium weekly for Virgin active, but unfortunately, my recent experiences have left me greatly disappointed. The gym's overall condition is in dire need of renovation, with several facilities showing signs of age and neglect. One glaring issue is the outdated shower cubicles, which led to an unfortunate incident last week when I found myself trapped inside due to faulty locks. This safety concern highlights the urgent need for maintenance and modernization. Moreover, the level of service has noticeably declined over time. The once exceptional service that attracted me to this gym seems to be a thing of the past. The staff members appear less attentive and responsive, failing to meet the standards I had come to expect. Additionally, the limited operating hours have become a major inconvenience. The gym's current schedule does not accommodate those with busy lifestyles, as the hours of operation are far too short. Extending the opening hours would greatly benefit members who strive to maintain an active lifestyle. In conclusion, I regret to say that my experience at Virgin active has been far from satisfactory. The deteriorating facilities, poor service, and limited operating hours have made it difficult to fully enjoy my membership. I hope that management takes these concerns seriously and prioritizes the necessary improvements to restore this gym to its former glory.
Thanks for the feedback Joanne. We have tried to reach out directly to you, but we can't seem to find any record of you being a member or visiting the club. In any case, we would love to turn your experience around so please reach out to [email protected] or make yourself known to our friendly front of house team. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, clean and new facilities, not too crowded
Thank you for continuing to live Happily Ever Active ;) -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: The last time I visited this place, before this week, was back in 2019. It's still well maintained, tidy and clean. No major revamp since 2019 from what I remember but I don't think it really needs it either. I only used the free weights, cardio and accessed the change rooms, so I can't comment on the classes.
Thank you for the review, Chris! We're stoked to hear we still live up to your expectations from 2019. See you again, soon. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: This gym has lots of different classes with friendly people & lovely facilities including: spa, sauna, pool, climbing wall, lockers, dyson hairdryers, ghd straighteners. There is lots of space and equipment to do your own thing and lots of equipment.
We love your review, Florence! But we love having you here even more! Looking forward to having you in again soon! -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Convenient, clean, friendly gym to go to. Can’t say more. Just come n enjoy. I do have membership in others but once u joined virgin u can’t go back.
Thanks for the review and thank you for living happily ever ACTIVE. -Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Positive experience: Me sentí muy cómodo en las instalaciones y su personal fue muy amable. Amaba ir a ese lugar.
Positive experience: Generally good facilities and the place is looked after but why is the swimsuit spin dryer ALWAYS broken?
Fantastic experience: Great gym and most of the staff are super friendly (Jordan, Lara, Adrian especially). Very clean.
Negative experience: Good facilities and great classes, but I left a while ago because I really disliked the way I was being treated by some of the staff. The whole experience was below average because of it
We're so pleased that you loved our facilities Anmay, but it sounds like we missed the mark with your experience. We'd love it if you wouldn't mind emailing [email protected] so we can follow up with you directly to learn about your experienceThanks Anmay,Virgin Active Collins Street
Negative experience: BEWARE! Scammed by Nathan Wells, a member of Virgin Active Collins St’s membership staff. He explained the fee structure to me, I asked many specific questions about extra fees, cool off period and break fees to try and understand the contract. He conveniently left out an important fee that I was slapped with when I ended my membership. The club refused to refund even though he explicitly said he had made a mistake, in writing. I had been a virgin active member years ago and enjoyed the facilities but their customer experience is horrific.
Hi Michael,I am sorry to hear that your experience cooling off your membership with Virgin Active fell short of your expectations, We constantly strive to provide a better experience for our members so I would love an opportunity to discuss with you further and see what actions we can take, could I please ask you to email [email protected] with your contact details and membership number.Kind RegardsDale Ball, Operations and Safety Manger, Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Great location and good facilities. Staff is super friendly and helpful. A few recomendations. Stairs between man’s lockers and swimming room needs to be cleaned. Smells feet fungus.(update, it was cleanded, thanks 5 starts:-) ) Really restrictive open hours. Sauna and pool even gets closed 30 minutes earlier. Otherwise very happy I joined.
We're so glad you are enjoying the club and look forward to continually welcoming you back. We'll take your feedback regarding our wet area into consideration.-Scott, Club General Manager at Virgin Active Collins Street
Fantastic experience: Great gym and most of the staff are super friendly (Jordan, Lara, Adrian especially). Very clean.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Melbourne
Fantastic experience: Very good I really liked this virgin active
Positive experience: Good facilities but I would like longer opening hours.
Fantastic experience: جاي من عند عزيز يوتيوب❤️❤️
Negative experience: The customer service agent cannot be less helpful. Refused to cancel the membership and refund the pro-rata fee paid before lockdown occurred. Do not recommend.
Negative experience: Virgin Melbourne clubs are not dealing with the current pandemic well: 1) Gyms only reopen from Wednesday 11/11 & reduced group classes varieties (as compared to other recognisable gyms) 2) Management gives very standard corporate replies when following up on issues 3) They do not provide prompt updates to the reopening until very last minute 4) Despite paying premium membership prices - members were treated nuisance (like some deserted members admiring other gym goers attending classes on 9/11) and delayed feedback response. 5) Other gyms have opened up for their members on 9 Nov yet VA has not response and delayed reopening - does not make any sense to members and does not provide a sensible approach 6) Not transparent with their management/group class strategies - trying to hide a lot of information from members 7) Inflexible management - does not take members feedback onboard 8) Does not prepare in advance strategies (they were given two weeks to prepare for reopening and start to fumble when reopening without enough instructors I don't suggest/recommend people to join if you are looking for new gym. Try Goodlife, Fitness First or Jet Fitness as they are now a group of companies and they are financially fit and have sufficient resources to deal with your queries!
Negative experience: The place used to be good but not anymore. Terrible services which made it so unpleasant to visit now. The manager (forgot the name could be called Renee) is very inexperienced and have no idea what is going on in the place. You have to book to use the pool, as there are only limited slots (according to them, the pool is only open when they have staff around to watch the number of people in the pool). So atm it only opens from 5pm each day: - Despite the booking to use the pool and their sound arrangement to be covid savvy, the pool is still surprisingly crowded so you always have to share lane with someone else (and the staff next to the pool do nothing to manage the number of swimmers in the pool other than counting their fingers); - Rude swimmers wearing hand paddles which is bulky and made it impossible to share lane coz you always get hit by the paddle or scracthed; - Raised the issue to the staff who absolutely had no idea and manager said the hand paddle swimmer is one of their frequent visitors and they can't control what people wear in the pool. As a beginner swimmer I should bring my own lifebuoy in case if I get knocked out by someone's paddle. If you are looking for a friendly local gym this is not the one, it is terrible with rude people around and staff need at least some common sense on how to do customer service.
Negative experience: Huge disappointment! Went to gym today, had a book a class at 6:30pm, head in early to asked membership deal for my friend who want to join. Asked lady at reception, she said isn’t sure about membership deal, understood. And she explained due to covid rule i can’t stay at the gym till my class starts, understood. Cuz that’s no ones decision, asked her to just go to toilet, doesn’t let me in. Just going to toilet. Asked her can i stay in rest room still see many ppl seating there. She said ‘no’ i can’t stay, asked me to wait outside till my class start. Very convenience. That’s how you guys work? Due to controlling capacity, members hard to in classes and less classes runs. There is no discount noting, still pay whole amount membership fee, but can’t get in. If there capacity of people, why don’t you guys run more classes that member can have a better option. ?
Negative experience: I have been introduced to this Gym since the start of this year by my friend. She told me she had joined for 5 years and the classes here are great! I trust her and already been with the gym for half year. With tutor and classes Pilates. It’s very nice and professional. But the staff who works there, I could just say I don’t understand their staff training standard and management system. For example, while their locker is broken and I asked for a help. The front desk girl is acting super funny. Without ask me where the locker is and directly send me to man’s changing room. I was like excuse me, I don’t use man’s changing room and …. Then she directly stopped me and ask me wait at the upstairs still where the men’s changing room is. Maybe because of my height and a bit deep voice of cough, but I am in women’s wear and my locker was at the unisex changing area with individual room beside the swimming pool. But that dear blond girl already help me change my gender to be a man? And send me wrong area with impatient attitude and mystery self confidence?! I feel very hurt with this discrimination and as a HELP desk, darling you do not even listen to your client need and you form a decision for your client? I honestly can not understand, and that blond girl looks me weird with a funny emotion while she send me to man’s changing room, which I think she means to make me feeling awkward and joke my gender. Later i try to communicate with their manager, but he’s acting is ‘ yea yea yea, sure sure sure, ok ok ok.’ With no cares and I am sure he probably just don’t care how his stuff treat the client who paid money to them. I honestly told him your staff behavior is standing for your club and company. And that activity has been hurt my dignity and I don’t even receive an applications. I think their target clients maybe just type of person as Trump who likes rough and un respectful attitude to them. Cuz mafia could only communicate with mafia.
Negative experience: I had been with this gym for 2 years and because of injuries i had to put my membership on hold for few months , after I recovered i got busy with my daily life and I didn’t have time for the gym until one day i checked my bank accounts and realised that every fortnightly virgin active had been taking money from my account without giving me any notifications !!!!!! When I complained they said the hold on account would automatically be lifted after few months and it gets back to normal payments!!!!! Not only they refused to refund my money but even they refused when i asked if I could work out for the time for which they took my money !!!!
Fantastic experience: I haven’t started yet, however what made me decide to make this review is the customer service there! I booked a tour as I wanted just to explore the gym and had no intentions to sign up immediately, but “Fabian” was extremely friendly! He is knowing what he doing and he explained everything to me in details and answered all of my inquiries. As a result to such great customer service, I did signed up and I’m very excited to go there. *I will update this review after using the gym for a week or so (: Update after 2 months: I always used to sign up in a gym and end up leaving within 2 weeks. However at Virgin Active I felt that there something positively different, I don’t know what is exactly but I love it :) , it has been 2 months now and I still go there at least 3-4 times a week. I’m really happy that I could do that and the results are great.
Hello Majeed, thanks so much for taking the time to leave your great review. We are thrilled to hear about your positive experience whilst signing up. We truly hope you're enjoying being a member with us! Thanks and have a great day!
Fantastic experience: What makes Virgin Active Collins Street [VACS] such a superb and amazing gym isn't just one thing; it really hits the nail on the head in terms of getting all the important things done. What are those you may ask? 1) Equipment. You obviously go to the gym for a workout (duh!) and you can't fault VACS equipment wise- there's a huge range of equipment laid out even with the COVID-19 precautions they've taken and in all my years I've never had to wait for a single piece- hell there's very few occasions I've had anyone on the equipment next to me, which is quite nice as you can not get distracted and easily get into your zone. While I can easily say this in the point below; a huge shout out to Phil the guy who fixes stuff around the gym; the dude is ALWAYS doing something and anytime I've reported something broken it's fixed really quickly!! 2) Staff/Customer Service. There's a reason why I rank this so highly in the pyramid of success that VACS achieves it's because they achieve this quite efficiently and effortlessly. From the moment you step into the gym and meet any one of the fabulous and welcoming reception team (Hi Molly and Josh and Beth!!). you are welcomed like a friendly face and the reception team always seem to have the answer to any questions that you may have- I have yet to stump them! The personal trainers are all pretty amazing- for various reasons I've trained with a few of them either regularly or for one or two sessions and they are all brilliantly trained with a fantastic approach that I've always felt they're looking out for me and my fitness goals. A huge hat's off to the amazing Luke- if you're lucky to train with him you'll be amazed as he's just all kinds of amazing with a brilliant approach and is all about getting the best out of you. 3) Classes. The range of classes at VACS is amazing; if you just stick to classes you would easily get your money's worth soon enough as there's a huge ranger and variety that you can find something to suit your needs or try a new class to change things up. With the recent reopening since the COVID-19 inspired lock down it appears that VACS has taken the opportunity to rejig the class timetables; while the "big ticket" classes are still on the list; they've removed some and added some new ones. I think this is a great thing because it's always good to freshen up and give members the opportunity to experience new classes- having said that I still miss Anti-Gravity Yoga 4) Price. I have left this to last as it's a bit of an "issue". While the price is a bit costly; if you're using it consistently (I'm a city worker and I currently go seven days a week!), it's worth an investment. If you're looking at going take a tour and get a feel of it- hopefully you're lucky enough to get Fabian as he's knowledge is superb but any of the staff will be fine!- as that's really the only way to know if this gym is for you. As outlined above; VACS does the important things fantastically
Aww Robbie, you’re going to make us blush! ☺️Thank you for the kind words, we loving having you and can’t wait to see you again very soon!
Fantastic experience: Superb And One of the best gyms in the town , wish they have weekly membership and a shoe sole cleaner rather than making visitors get clean shoes
Fantastic experience: Nice spa and swimming pool, friendly staffs

Fantastic experience: First class gym
Fantastic experience: Awesome . Incredible facilities . Courteous reception staff and friendly motivated coaches to help you on yr fitness journey
Negative experience: The gym facilities are superb but the reception is very rude. Not worth the membership fee to be disrespected in front of other people.

We'd love to chat to you more about what we could possibly do to improve your experience with us. Could you please give us a call 1300 975 688 or send a note to [email protected] at your earliest convenience? Thank you.
Positive experience: Amazing facilities - but certainly over crowded at times- which makes sense as this is a city gym. Maybe need more free weights and benches to alleviate the issue
Hello Jonnie, thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback, we appreciate your input and have passed this on to our team.Thank you.
Negative experience: Unless you use all the facilities it's pretty overpriced. Overcrowding in the weight area is an issue. It's also super annoying when you have people, this also includes some personal trainers who hog machines and equipment during peak times. Learn how to schedule your programmes!!! One more pay cycle then I'm ditching VA Collins! So many other cheaper and more convenient options!
Hello, thank you very much for taking the time to let us know your experience. We're truly sorry to hear about your experience with the weight area, and appreciate the feedback. We'd love to chat to you more about your comments and what we could possibly do to improve your experience with us. Could you please give us a call 1300 975 688 or send a note to [email protected] at your earliest convenience? Thank you.
Negative experience: FREEZING POOL! I was a member of Virgin active for 9 years in the UK and Aust- Collins St Pool is MUCH cooler than all others (and i do not like it too hot-BUT) - staff told, various times, to no avail. It's no Canary Warf Virgin Active UK I can tell you. Good for an Australian gym. NOT a 'luxury gym'- but few in Aust know what that is. C'mon, Virgin, get on it.
Hello there, thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear about your experience. Fantastic experience: I wrote a review about the air bike not being replaced. Virgin responded back with a temporary solution until the second air bike is replaced or fixed. Issue resolved! Other than that, friendly reception, new equipment, great pool, immaculately clean gym
Hello Simon, thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear about your experience with the equipment, and can assure you that we always do our best to replace or fix broken equipment as soon as we can. If you would love to chat more about what we could do to improve your experience with us, please give us a call 1300 975 688 or send a note to [email protected] at your earliest convenience. Positive experience: This morning I couldn't get to my class on time as no trains were running into the city for some unknown reason. I called the gym straight away to notify them and to see if i was able to deduct only one point instead of two as this was completely out of my control . The receptionist said there was nothing that can be done unless I came in later ( there were no trains and I needed to work so wasn't an option) As a regular to the gym who attends 4-6 times a week, pays for additional services as well as was looking into getting PT sessions, I must say this was really disappointing to be so unhelpful. I totally get that there is a point system in place for a reason however she could clearly hear I was outside and this was was a situation outwith my control. I also wasn't asking her to take both off appreciating that I have still missed the class. This was disappointing especially, as I know for a fact my friend has called up in the past cancelling classes last minute and has had points deducted from different receptionists. I have found the customer service in Bourke Street much more helpful and understanding and generally they seem to value their customers much more. On another note the classes/ gym is great with varied options and equipment. Just note mornings in the changing rooms tend to be super crowded.
Hello Hannah, thanks for getting in touch! We appreciate your feedback, and would love to see how we could upgrade your experience to 5 stars! Our booking system can certainly be frustrating for our members who rarely (if ever) abuse the system! Please know there are no booking penalties for up to 6 points within a calendar month. That said, we know some circumstances are just out of our control. If you could please share your experience with us in an email to [email protected], we can look into this for you. Thanks and have a great day!
Fantastic experience: As a gym you won’t find better equipment or better-trained and nicer PTs. Great classes and a cheap towel service too! Lastly.. and the reason I’m leaving this review.. when I needed to quit (just for logistical reasons) the manager sat down with me perfectly politely and professionally and processed it no other questions asked, no trickery or extra expenses. That’s a massive difference to other experiences I’ve had. I wouldn’t hesitate to sign up again.
Hey Jonathon, thanks very much for taking the time leave your 5-star review. We love that your experience with us from sign up to break up () was exceptional. We do hope to see you come back! See you soon.
Fantastic experience: Great services and equipments. If you would like to communicate in Chinese, you could try contact Wing. He help me to improve my workout positions over and over again, which I am thankful to his patience.
Hello Chunhui, thank you very much for your great review. We're really glad to hear Wing has been a good support for you at the club. See you soon!
Fantastic experience: hope you open again soon!
