While the centre is praised for its community feel and the quality of swimming lessons provided by dedicated instructors, some users have expressed concerns about the age of the facilities and equipment. Peter Krenz Leisure Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: Firstly, read Zac Gittins' review below. He has absolutely nailed it. I have been a member here for over two years now and utilise both the gym and pool areas regularly (4-5 times per week). From the perspective of someone committed to their health and wellbeing, I have slowly observed the facilities around me deteriorating, staff becoming more incompetent and the centre, as a whole, offering less and less value due to what is clearly a SYSTEMIC DYSFUNCTION. Yes management, you heard me right. There are some excellent staff (Tanya, Pete, Phoebe etc.) and some staff who need to do further training in providing a well-rounded customer experience ASAP before more members begin to switch to Gurri Wanyarra in Kangaroo Flat which, sadly, is the only other option available to Bendigo people, however, I am beginning to think it is worth a try.
Fantastic experience: A little dated but everything is clean and works
Negative experience: Initially, I thought it was a good gym to train at; now, after a year and a half, I think otherwise. I think the gym could do with three major things - a change of management, a refurbished facility, and a price drop. I train at this gym regularly. Four times a week for the past year and a half. Here is my review. Compared to other facilities around Bendigo, I think this facility is outdated. They have to put buckets throughout the hallways to catch the raindrops when there is a heavy downpour; otherwise, water will flood the walkways. In the gym, patches are on the floor from degradation, and I have heard of fellow patrons tripping over these patches. The equipment often has 'out of order' laminated paper, which illustrates how outdated some of the equipment is. Apart from how old the facility is and how old the equipment is, you can still perform your exercises on the machines and equipment. I think there needs to be a change in management. Whenever I walk within this facility to check in to use the gym, I think the staff looks depressed or unhappy. When they speak to me, I think they are monotone and the expressions on their faces are restricted. I wonder what is happening behind the scenes that could be causing the staff to look and sound this way. There was a time a while ago when I booked an appointment with the exercise physiologist to review the programs I use. I organised to see them on Sunday. I had to re-organise important events for this meeting, and when I walked in to see them, the reception staff member told me that he wasn't in that day and that I needed to reschedule. When I rescheduled and saw the physiologist, they said they had let management know seven days prior that they would not be in that day. I thought that was pathetic, and I filed a complaint. I do not think it is hard to call a patron to reschedule an appointment. As I mentioned earlier about patrons tripping over the degraded gym floors, I heard that a staff member sat in their office whilst a patron had fallen over and did not exit that office to see how they were and ensure their safety. I also think that is pathetic, and if I were a gym staff member, I would always be on the floor watching the patrons to ensure they are exercising safely and using the appropriate techniques. I suspect there may be other things behind closed doors; why else would the reception staff look unhappy and sound monotone? I suspect there may be strong personalities, potential bullying or incompetent supervisors /managers that the staff may find challenging. The other major thing I have identified is the price. I think the price is too expensive for what it is. You pay a lot for an outdated, poorly managed facility and old equipment and to walk into unhappy workers with monotone voices who I think struggle even to smile. I think you're better off going to Gurriwanyara or other new facilities, which are managed appropriately and are cheaper than Peter Krenz. Despite the negatives I have listed, there are three staff members I think are lovely and who I think are appropriate for their roles. A young fellow in reception always has a smile on his face, greets the patrons warmly and seems effective in his role. There are two gym members: a male with dreads and a woman who often sits on the desk. I think they are both fantastic. I observe them walk around the gym, mingle with the patrons, and ensure their safety by keeping a watchful eye on us and ensuring that we use the appropriate techniques instead of sitting in the office with the door shut and lights off for their whole shift. I will finish my six-month outright membership, close my account, and train at another new gym with happier staff, competent management, and functional equipment. I encourage others to be mindful before starting at this gym, and if you do, be aware of these issues.
Fantastic experience: I wanted to take a moment to recognize one of your staff members, Kaleb, who helped me sign my son up for swimming lessons and a membership for myself. When I was there, it was quite busy, but he remained professional and friendly to everyone who came in, always smiling. He answered all of my questions without hesitation and handled everything very well.
Positive experience: The steam room is small but keeps a good temperature. The spa is like flat mineral water - you can see there's bubbles in the right light, but sure can't feel them. Staff are friendly - can't fault them.
Fantastic experience: Had a very good experience with a fitness class today but I would just encourage the Centre to check on health conditions when booking clients in, rather than at the time of a class. It felt a little bit awkward. I was a little bit caught off guard to be singled out during the class and spoken to about exercise I needed to avoid and whether the class catered to me. Thank you.
Positive experience: A good spot to cool off
Fantastic experience: My children have been attending this centre for a few years, lovely caring staff, great centre.
Fantastic experience: Plenty there for a swimmers and non swimmers ! Large lap pool , smaller pool for the disabled and non swimmer! A beautiful spa and sauna! A gym and at the entrance food sold towels and bathers!
Fantastic experience: We go here for swimming lessons for our school-aged kids. Kind, professional teachers who make sure your child has the right posture, in order to succeed in their swimming. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Love Peter Krenz Leisure Centre Staff are so friendly
Negative experience: Im new to the area and thought this pool would be a good place to go for a swim not terrible but not great either. The pool needs a little bit of work and a bit of a clean in the locker rooms aswell as the pool itself. Staff are nice here which is a good thing
Negative experience: A few friends and I took our kids. Was hardly anyone else there. They opened the slide for not even 20 minutes and wouldn’t let us (adults) take our youngest ones Down. Life guards were rude and not approachable and were to busy huddled in their own conversations to worry about anyone else. Don’t think they were very happy we were there. Won’t be returning.
Positive experience: Its a good community pool, only issue i have, is that i only use the spa, but have to pay for the pool as part of the fee, $10.40 to go and soak for an hour is rediculous, i have mentioned that i am being charged for something i do not use, staff know that it is a rip off, but obviously management dont want to lose that dirty little money maker for a casual spa, do something about it.
Positive experience: The 50 metre pool is the best around Bendigo for swimming laps. Helpful and friendly staff.
Positive experience: Lovely staff very clean
Fantastic experience: Great staff, excellent instructors all very friendly and helpful ❤
Fantastic experience: Matthew and the rest of the staff were super friendly. Will definitely get a membership after holidays.
Positive experience: Great to be back. Great staff and great equipment in the Health Club Many other activities including Group Exercise and Swimming and swimming lessons
Fantastic experience: Great place to have a Swim just give a visit
Fantastic experience: All staff are great and help full
Negative experience: Hopefully once covid passes and some work is done this place might be okay. The staff are nice but restrictions can be 1 or 3 people for 10 minutes in steam room and 6 or 15 in spa for 15 minutes and they enforce it. I only restarted my membership and already cancelled because you sign in and then they tell you oh 'there is no running water' or 'the steam room isn't working' they may as well shut the place down...
Positive experience: I like to go to the gym here. Also squash, racquetball and basketball courts. The pool is good and there's a water slide.
Fantastic experience: Covid restrictions have meant no Water Aerobics!! Miss this the most.
Fantastic experience: Fully equipped pool and gym. Lacks a sauna but had a spa and steam room. Gym is great too. Staff is friendly and informative.
Fantastic experience: Great facility for all your self improvement needs including a health club, sauna and aquatic centre!
Fantastic experience: Great facilities. Friendly helpful staff
Fantastic experience: Really good
Fantastic experience: Hydro pool beautiful and warm. Could do with being a foot deeper though
Fantastic experience: Great place to take kids & have a great day lots to do there
Positive experience: Quite a bit run down and aged. Staff are lovely. Except if the slide is open, sometimes it's just for the kids in the lessons and not for anyone else, bit rough on littles wanting to have a go with the other kids. Can get really stuffy in there if the temp.is up just a bit. Bathrooms are not kept very clean either.
Fantastic experience: The best Swimming centre on my doorstep, it just doesn't get any better. Kids enrolled for lessons by passionate instructors. Since reopening we all have noticed the sprucing up that has taken place during lockdown. We have seen our Council rates at work at this Fantastic facility. Young and Old locals or not start using this place. As the saying goes If we don't use it we'll lose it. Enjoy while we have it.
Fantastic experience: Excellent service
Fantastic experience: Good pool friendly staff
Negative experience: Good
Positive experience: Good place for a swim, or swimming lessons for the kids.
Fantastic experience: Great pool
Fantastic experience: Great place to take the kids to cool off or even for the people who enjoy doing laps in the 50 meter pool with all pools heated all year round.
Negative experience: Looking a bit sad. Water slide was said to be broken??? Won't rush back.
Positive experience: Strong chlorine smell in air, low ventilation
Fantastic experience: great place
Fantastic experience: Good to be back in the gym again
Positive experience: A little tired
Negative experience: Was a very limited amount of public swimming area aswell as lifegurad putting a stop to safe playing, all non slip flooring damaged and dangerous
Fantastic experience: Love this place kids and now bub here love it
Positive experience: Clean pool, helpful staff.
Positive experience: Nice makeover.... still needs little things but great value
Fantastic experience: Excellent sports facilities here. Lovely customer service
Positive experience: My grandson has been doing swimming lessons for 2 &1/2 years here. He started at 6mths old & will turn 3 next week. He is doing excellently & loves it. What a brilliant skill for little ones which should be mandatory since we live on an island. Grandma is so proud of you Lincoln &your mummy for putting in the effort to make sure he is safe around water. Thanks to Kerry & Helen who have taught him over that time.
Positive experience: I have been swimming here for over 22 years. The pool is always clean. Although the change room is a bit tired it is alwsys clesn and tidy.
Positive experience: Needs some doing up but staff are very helpful and courteous
Positive experience: Great staff very helpful..very clean pool
Positive experience: Would be good if they correctly listed their opening hours. Seems they are closed all public holidays not just Good Friday and Christmas Day
Fantastic experience: Having a great time with our 5 grandies
Fantastic experience: Nice place i liked it
Fantastic experience: Awsome staff and clean facilities
Positive experience: Nice leisure centre ,a gym with personal trainers that will make you work and keep you motivated. Great sized pool that is never really that busy , and an awesome little coffee shop . They have a frequent flyer program with the coffee shop for free coffee after you have purchased. Such patient staff that are so polite to everyone.
Fantastic experience: Great place, with friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Come here alot with work, staff are great and are always friendly.
Positive experience: It is an older pool, but we, as a family like it. We have found the toddler pool to be a bit dirty in the past, but as we now use the middle sized pool, so that's not an issue any longer. I also think it depends on what families have been using the toddler pool as I've seen some families using it who didn't care about their rubbish going into the pool. The staff are usually really lovely, though there is one lifeguard that's not the nicest person to approach.
Positive experience: A great place though entry for this older facility, which is looking old and tired, is high.
Fantastic experience: Great place to swim and train at the gym great staff at front desk
Fantastic experience: The YMCA gives great classes for fitness and wellbeing, the pools aren't crowded in the swimming lanes and gym goers are courteous. I recommend one of their memberships to take full advantage of this great environment.
Positive experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Has everything been swimming their 5 years now! Pool plus sauna and spa, great staff, awesome locals who we always have a chat and a laugh! Really enjoyable time! Look forward to it every time I go!
Fantastic experience: Good spot
Fantastic experience: Tricia is a relent swimming teacher
Negative experience: Time to call it a day when you start to see mould growing around the place, and unfriendly staff. Was once a great centre.
Positive experience: Good swimming place.
Positive experience: Great place for the children to go swimming safely and well supervised.
Positive experience: Needs renovations
Fantastic experience: Good value
Positive experience: My wife and I are gym members so we're there every week
Positive experience: Good facilities
Fantastic experience: New stretch class was fanfastic. Great start to the weekend.
Negative experience: It's looking tired, badly in need of maintenance
Fantastic experience: Great gym an staff
Fantastic experience: Great place to the kids when it's got three in door pools and a spa and sauna. Great for the family, o and they also have swimming lessons for your kids .
Fantastic experience: Great Place for a Relaxing work out
Positive experience: Unlike most pools, they charge to watch your children.
Positive experience: Needs an update, not very clean, tiles down to spa & around spa had ground in dirt. Chlorine spilt on tiles of spa edge. Soft fall floor in pool area looks shabby & badly needs refurb. Needs push & pull signs on doors to enter pool area & several other doors are missing these signs also. Tiles on floor of Ladies change room, toilets & shower are very dirty, Ladies change room in pool area overdue for paint job & updating of basins & vanity unit needed. Life guards only seem to look over intermediate pool & no where else. Life guards stand around talking, taking little notice of any pool/spa.
Positive experience: Improved facilities and good water to swim.
Fantastic experience: Staff are really nice and friendly.
Fantastic experience: I go here 3=4 times a week friendly place to go for exercise or leisure
Fantastic experience: Wonderful facility. Not busy at lunchtime. Has lap pool, intermediate pool, hot spa and sauna. Very good facility
Negative experience: The KANGAROO FLAT POOL is much better
Fantastic experience: Great place for the family. Great staff.
Positive experience: Good facilities, friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Great facilities
Positive experience: Very good pool to go to in summer. No crowds. 2 pools to choose from.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, friendly staff, clean pools and change rooms. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: Been going to do Hydrotherapy as often as possible over past few weeks. Everyone working there are very helpful, lots of smiles. Love the Steam room, its even better when they use the Eucalyptus spray in there and the fact the pools indoors and all weather is awesome. Temperatures are comfortable for Hydrotherapy in the intermediate pool too. Seems to be a proactive environment with lots to offer. Very family oriented too. Thumbs up guys.
Positive experience: Small space for social swimming
Negative experience: Could be great but rundown, unhygienic and no one cares when things are pointed out to management such as broken shower locks, taps not working, no bucket to slosh others sweat off seats in steam room etc
Positive experience: I only take the kids to the pool, so I can only comment on that. There is always plenty of life guards and they test the water regularly.
Positive experience: Friendly & helpful staff but the facilities are becoming delapedated, corrosion has started to take hold and clenliness is also a problem slime is growing on floors and seats, Mould is apparent in changing rooms and the showers are cold most of the time.
Positive experience: Good pool cheep day out for kids
Fantastic experience: Great Staff
Positive experience: What time do they open on australia day
Fantastic experience: Great fun for all ages
