Melbourne City Baths: Opinions
Negative experience: You won’t find worse in melborune
Positive experience: Love the Aquarobics with Judy I go because of Judy - she’s a brilliant instructor! I get exercise and have a laugh out loud… she is so good for my mental health! I’ve just started Pilates Reformer with Julia and I’m so impressed at her calm teaching . I am 65 and ‘have’ to enjoy any form of fitness otherwise no point. I love the building too!
Fantastic experience: I come here for casual swims and aquatic education and it's been a great experience. Lockers are always free, the pool is warm and staff is always around to help. Great atmosphere definitely recommend if you are trying to get back into swimming again.
Fantastic experience: ジャグジーと25m温水プールが最高 $8で利用可能なのでいつもお世話になっている 外観はモダンでとてもクールだが、中は綺麗で吹き抜けがあって気持ちいい
Fantastic experience: Excellent services and great facilities
Fantastic experience: Helpful staff and great facilities!
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, great staff in a great building!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and confortable place. Where I can be healthy and enjoy myself
Fantastic experience: Been a member at Melbourne City Baths for a few years now! Staff always welcoming and facilities are perfect! Would recommend 10/10 ✌
Fantastic experience: Great vibes, friendly environment , amazing pool and spa/sauna facilities and plenty of lockers, been going here for 4 years now
Fantastic experience: Love most parts about this gym - city location, friendly environment and I love that it has a sauna/spa as well.
Fantastic experience: great gym and facilities. friendly and helping staff. highly recommend for swimming, sauna, and gym
Fantastic experience: Melbourne City Baths is such a terrific gym with supportive people. The reformer pilates, cycling and Les Mills classes are fantastic. I highly recommend this gym.
Fantastic experience: Well maintained pool facilities and management constantly upgrading facilities for improved member experiences and safety. Recently implemented broader opening hours to accomodate busy people, ie 6am to 10pm Mondays to Thursdays, 6am to 8pm Friday, and 8am to 6pm on weekends.
Fantastic experience: I have been using the Gym, Swimming Pool, Sauna and Spa for more than 2 years at the Melbourne City Baths, and have had a great time utilizing their Well maintained and conditioned facilities. Loved every bit of my time there, and will continue going there for years to come! Thanks to all the trainers there, who were very friendly and helpful, which helped me have a great environment in there!
Fantastic experience: I started at the baths’ gym due to the inexpensive fees for a student such as myself. I love all of the facilities and the staff are super welcoming and warm. My friends and I sometimes use the baths as a catch up spot; catching up as we sauna together. Big fan of the baths and I hope to be a member for a long time.
Fantastic experience: Love this gym! In the heart of the city. Great facilities with a clean pool, relaxing spa, sauna, and a variety of group classes. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Love coming here for a casual swim whenever I'm in the city. Great pool and friendly front desk staff - I'm often served by Rizo who always shows exceptional customer service and has a great attitude every time, which is so rare nowadays! Would definitely sign up as a member if I was a local!
Fantastic experience: City Baths has it all! Whether you're looking to swim, work out, take Pilates, try boxing, play squash, or relax in the sauna and jacuzzi, this place has you covered. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Despite being located right in the city, it never feels as crowded as other gyms, making it my go-to spot for both fitness and leisure. Highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: We have joined City Bath for two years as prime members. The gym, swimming pool and changing room are good. The staffs are friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for anyone to join.
Fantastic experience: Melbourne City Baths is a fantastic facility with top-notch amenities. The staff are super friendly, helpful and well-prepared, the place is always clean and well-maintained. Whether you’re there for a swim, a workout, or a class (from yoga, Pilates to an amazing Zumba class) you’ll find everything you need. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great place to stay active in the city! Love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic experience: best battered barramundi in the CBD, will definitely be returning
Negative experience: Constantly reducing lap lanes without notice and not utilising their second pool, a made for purpose facility, for water aerobics , beginner’s swim lesson etc Main pool is often so hot it is like a Turkish bath! 29 degrees is far too hot for swimming; it is becoming a health and safety issue. Unfortunately, staff are always going to “pass feedback” to senior management, who ignore constructive feedback, or they are ready with the most creative explanations in answer to complaints! What should be a place where a swimmer can get into their own “zone” and enjoy their exercise is being regularly compromised. I hope administrators start looking at using the facilities they have more effectively. It is not that hard!
Negative experience: Amazing gym within beautiful architecture and nice natural lighting. Sauna is nice but rarely cleaned, old band-aid was in there for 4 weeks. Showers and change rooms are also filthy. Most staff are friendly, but some are absolutely arrogant and rude which completely ruins the mood sometimes. They also close way too early on weekends. Won't be signing up for a membership.
Negative experience: The panels that seperate showers are so high off the ground that people can see you from the reflection of the water on the ground. Literally I caught a creepy old man doing this to me today. I wanted to report but I felt disgusted so I just finished quickly and left. The reason I know it was done on purpose was because the shower I picked, had only one next to it, and that one did not have a lock on it! All the other showers were empty, and this old man chose that one. He then left the cubicle fully naked just showing himself off to others in the changing room. Truly a disturbing experience and I recommend no one goes there, unless you’re some creepy old man.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place great gym pool spa sauna excellent atmosphere staff are kind and accommodating. Plus the building is a beautiful piece of Melbourne history 5 stars I'd give 10 if I could
Positive experience: Friendly staff and decent facilities. Especially the lifeguards are super helpful and friendly. I’m new to the bath, feeling safe when I was there. It’s worth for spending time here. Just the a bit pricy for students. Maybe get a membership would be a wiser option.
Positive experience: If you are disabled then you need to check access into the pool as it was not suitable for my friend. We were able to get into building with no problems but not able to get into the pool. Parents should be provided with a 'Parents room' and the disabled bathroom should be left for people with a disability.
Negative experience: Not kid friendly adults only, otherwise it's a nice place.
Fantastic experience: Historical building that houses a quaint 25m pool, spa, sauna, and gym. Wonderful facility in the heart of the city. I received an exceptional customer service experience from Rizo. He explained the membership options clearly and let me have a look around before committing. I appreciated his professional and friendly manner. Upon his advice, I signed up immediately. Thank you, Rizo!
Fantastic experience: 路過,覺得建築很有辨識度
Positive experience: Mad Max to the Fullest extent of the woods. So I will be back in the Thick of it.
Negative experience: Terrible customer service. There's a significant gap between their proclaimed values and the actual experience. Disappointed and unlikely to return.
Negative experience: If I could give this gym a zero star I would my clients ATM card was stolen in their man changing room due to their faulty lockers and then their customer service is shocking like how dare you hang up on someone f it makes me wonder if their staff even care about their clients stuff warning to all clients don't leave valuable stuff in their faulty lockers no one will help you...
Positive experience: I really like the swimming pool and the sauna even the gym is really good but some of the stuff is actually very rude.….
Fantastic experience: MCB is great place to learn swimming and training. all the staff super friendly and attentive. Sarah been greatly help all the time through email to organise session for my daughter. Mark and Rosie are amazing and patiently with all the kids.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful natural light filled pool area
Positive experience: Love the pool building itself and most of the staff are very friendly but the water temp is like a hot tub. Just means if you want to swim laps you risk passing out.
Fantastic experience: What a beautiful and historic inner city leisure centre. Beautiful architecture, unique and light filled Lap swimming pool. Pool a little warm… but not too warm and it was summer and warm-whilst I last visited.. FANTASTIC locker and change room facilities with iron and hairdryers. Step back into the city looking and feeling great. Toni and ALL her staff that morning were very professional and accommodating and helped make it perfect end to my city stay… too marks to all the staff
Positive experience: I visited in Dec 2023, and if you're wanting to know the contents of the gym, it is the following: - Strength Room, with 3 power rack/deadlift combo areas, one bench press, one incline bench, one reverse hyper, dumbbell sets - Gym Machines Room, with cable machine, row machine, pec deck, lat pulldown, also dumbbell sets. (All the machines are pretty new TechnoGym gear). - Cardio Area, heaps of rowers, bikes, and treadmills. Also appears to be cross trainers, and rope treadmills. Only critique is the single bench press, which I'd imagine would become a bottleneck during peak periods.
Negative experience: I was reluctant to write this review as I was very embarrassed by my experience. I had decided to come to the bath house on my day off with my friend for a relaxing and enjoyable experience which had been recommended to me. In the bath house I was approached by a staff member accusing me of being inappropriate in front of other guest, stating that i was wearing nothing under my towel. I was wearing a bathing suit, shorts while also being wrapped by my towel. The staff member shouted at me saying “are you wearing bathers underneath your towel?!” In front of male and female guests. The female staff should of pulled me aside and asked discretely. This left me feeling embarrassed and unable to enjoy the experience i had paid for, as i felt judged for doing nothing wrong which i felt like would not of happened if i was a caucasian woman in the same scenario which there were many other women with towels wrapped around them. I hope for future everyone is treated in the same standard and no other minority females will be singled out and shamed within this establishment.
Fantastic experience: My 1 year old daughter has just started swimming lessons here and it has only been 2 lessons thus far and she is absolutely thriving and loving these lessons. I love them as well especially seeing my little bestie enjoy seeing her friends that she is making here, socialising and LOVING all the swim toys hehe. Tabitha runs these lessons so well, so patient, so friendly and so kind. My daughter adores you! Thanks to James for signing us up as well and as I say "my future athlete" thanks you hehe. Looking forward to all the lessons to come.
Positive experience: 名稱是公共澡堂,進入参觀搖身一變成健身房!
Positive experience: Good staff and services good.
Fantastic experience: So many different activities in one spot
Negative experience: Spa is far too cold!
Fantastic experience: Nice facility in the Melbourne CBD
Positive experience: Great little gym and nice pool
Negative experience: Poor Experience. Very intimidating staff and very unfriendly atmosphere . Not recommended
Positive experience: Lovely clean facilities, friendly staff and just a short walk from Melbourne Central Station.
Fantastic experience: This renovated Victorian swimming pool complex is well worth a visit.
Negative experience: Extremely over crowded, melbourne city needs to stop building 20 different libraries that no one goes to and instead build more health and pool facilities around the city and Docklands to service the community
Positive experience: Public Melbourne City Baths in the CBD...Access to swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi. Entrance is AUD$ 9 for Concession Card....
Fantastic experience: Hot sauna Lovely Spa and Beautiful historic pool ♀️ will be back again.
Positive experience: Why are so many people using the pool, spa or sauna without taking a shower? There's also quite a few people going to the spa area in their underwear
Fantastic experience: Great cozy swimming pool in CBD, reasonably well maintained, small but not crowded in daytime.
Positive experience: Amazing staff, the gym has amazing equipment and the pool is perfect. It could improve the shower and changing rooms, but apart from that. Loving it
Positive experience: The building itself is very lovely especially the outside architecture, the pool is quite small it’s only a 25m lap pool.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful heritage building with great modern gym and pool facilities. Staff are always super friendly and helpful!
Fantastic experience: Went there with my parents that were visiting to have them swim. Ended up deciding to get a membership for all 3 of us. The place is really nice and the staff are amazing, we mainly delt with Rai and he was kind, patient and extreamly helpful ^^ big shout out.
Fantastic experience: Nice environment to learn swimming. My daughters mastered basic swimming skills in short period of time. Big shout out to coach Gavin and Ethan - Mia and Leah loves going to your lessons!
Fantastic experience: Great membership plans available for students / concession. Awesome group fitness timetable, gym / pool facilities & access to personal trainers all included in membership.
Negative experience: If you could leave 0 stars I would. I had the most appalling experience tonight. My partners a member and has been trying to convince me to join. I asked reception if I could pay for the pool but to do a walk through of the gym before deciding on membership which they were happy with. The gym was mostly body builders and quite intimidating which isn’t something I usually struggle with. The gym space is all over the place and instantly I decided I wouldnt use the gym space. Went for a swim then with my partner. There were two out of 4 lanes for children either playing or doing lessons in a small section of one. Leaving the swimming aisles busy and people bumping into eachother. The pool was cold so after some laps I went into the sauna. A staff member came running in after me asking if I paid. I said yes. She asked where my wrist band was. I told her I wasn’t a member but had paid. She told me to leave or to go back through the changing rooms to get my phone and then out to reception to pay $15.20 instead of $7.20 (ridiculous). I asked if I could stay in for a few minutes before leaving and pay on the way out and she very abruptly said “you need to leave”. I left feeling very embarrassed. I will not be returning and definitely will not be recommending them. The membership prices are also crazy expensive for the facilities offered. The prices have gone up twice since my partner joined a few months back. Floors in the pool area, sauna and changing rooms are filthy and covered in hairs. I’ve never seen them being cleaned in the few times I’ve been there. Such an appalling experience. Staff should be ashamed making people feel this way. I had a read through the reviews before posting this thinking it might have been a once off but read lots of reviews the same as mine. Don’t go here.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym, but alot of people there who have no respect for gym etiquette. Needs to be controlled. Talking loudly on phones, leaving weights on the floor, or for others to take off the press is not cool.
Negative experience: I decided to CANCEL my membership. Here is why: -for about one month, there were two shower stalls infested with fleas -in the members' area, most of the showers shoot out cold water -it seems that the temperature of the spa water is similar to the temperature of the pool water -the spa is a "free for all" - anyone can use it - so why do I have to pay more for its use? -a lifeguard asked whether my "underwear" was made of "cotton" (I felt so embarrassed) - I wasn't wearing "underwear" and there was no "cotton" - never been asked about this before - some training in courteous staff-patron relations would help! -some patrons use mobiles in the changerooms - on one occasion, I saw a patron on his mobile in the spa and a lifeguard walked right past -it seems that swimming lessons are going on 24/7 there so there's often a lane closed, therefore squashing everyone into three lanes -I was once inappropriately touched by a patron while swimming (I reported this) -the lockers need a good clean, not that they all work anyway Definitely need to have a good wash at home and give your clothes a good clean after visiting this place!
Negative experience: I will be cancelling my membership of over ten years. This place is a shadow of its former self. You will not get what you pay for, whether you are a member or a guest. First: the pool itself. The management know they are dealing with limited space in this venue, but they want to reduce that space as much as possible. The pool is now apparently an aquatic education facility before anything else. You will get no notice of classes being held. Two lanes will be taken up, and when you arrive to swim, you'll have to swim in narrowed lanes, crashing into fellow swimmers. It seems that management enjoys having people rub up against each other in swimsuits. You pay your money to swim, and then you are made to feel like you shouldn't have bothered in the first place. Second: the staff, and the lack of communication. Just tonight, we were all thrown out at 8pm, when there was a published closing time of 9pm. We suddenly had just 10 minutes to get out of the pool, get showered, get dressed, and get out. No notice was given to people arriving at the pool. There might be an obscure Facebook or Twitter message somewhere, but that would be it. That is utterly unacceptable for paying customers. The staff themselves are either unhelpful or just aggressively officious. You most probably won't find any helpful, smiling or caring people to assist you if you need them. Third: the showers and change rooms. In treating their customers with typical contempt, the showers were barely functioning for over a year (and a whole wall of lockers remains out of order, cramming people together with the limited available lockers). As said, the management know they are dealing with limited space. Now there has been an "upgrade", where the management, in their immense wisdom, have reduced the number of available public showers from eight to six. They have now "upgraded" the showers by installing cheap, claustrophobic cubicles, which serve no apparent purpose, and are an accident waiting to happen. Good luck trying to get a shower in peak times after you've just struggled your way through a stressful swim with three strangers crashing into you in your narrowed lane, all because the management wants an aquatic education class across two lanes. This facility is being mismanaged, and the management should be replaced as soon as possible. I have spent a lot of my money supporting this place in the past, but it is not worth it any more.
Positive experience: Great place to go swimming laps in the Melbourne CBD. The pool is spotlessly clean, well maintained, and the other swimmers are generally friendly and respectful. Before noon, it’s usually not too crowded and there’s 2-3 people per lane (circle swimming on the left side of the lane). They have a leisure, slow, medium, and fast lane, though at certain times, the medium and fast lanes are combined to make room for a swimming class. The locker room/showers are also clean, with free lockers to use for visitors (no need to bring your own lock as it’s locked electronically). Overall great place to swim. Docking one star because for some reason, they keep the pool temperature very high—unbearably hot at times—which makes swimming laps a challenge.
Negative experience: The pool is packed with aquatic classes so not a great place to unwind for a peaceful swim with narrow lanes particularly in the evening. The gym has lots of aggressive muscle builder patrons who make the rules and I've seen them order people off weights or machines while staff are indifferent. The showers are broken n spew out tepid water(usually cold). The spa is often cold or tepid n the jets(what jets?). The sauna has people on their mobiles so not chill n relaxing. And the staff are usually sarcastic, unhelpful or too busy having private conversations if u ask questions or need help. Honestly, I'd try Fitzroy, great pool, nice ppl and patrons and much better vibe. I only use melb city baths if I finish work late but it's definitely not my first choice.
Negative experience: Read all the reviews but still expected it would be different. But I had to wait for like 20mins just to talk to the staffs about details of classes and membership. After 20 mins finally got chance to talk, but not fully attending on me so I ended up getting not much information and wasted my time. they seem busy and need more staffs. That long waiting time made me that I don't want to join here
Fantastic experience: If you want to learn swimming from experienced instructors in a fun and safe way at a really affordable price, this is the place to be. The pools are very well maintained and is big enough for all levels of swimmers. There's ample lockers available for keeping our stuff. There are showers attached to the locker room. The staff are friendly and approachable. The building has historical significance and is a wonderful place.
Positive experience: Joined swimming lessons. So far good. Will give an update after while. I am enjoying the classes. The prices are affordable .
Positive experience: The architecture of the building adds different sense and emotions to your swimming experience. Place is very clean and well maintained. Sauna was huge and super warm
Fantastic experience: Deceptively wetter than you'd expect
Fantastic experience: Professional and helpful staff
Negative experience: Poor management and rude staff. Not suitable for kids. The staff would ensure that you have the worst experience.
Positive experience: The gym is great. But after lockdown it closes at 8pm. This is not very convenient.
Positive experience: Hadn't been for 18 months and improvements are fantastic. Great to have free lockers.
Negative experience: Unfriendly nasty female staff both at the front desk and in the pool area who seem to go out of their way to make life difficult. Even my 11 year old was upset.
Fantastic experience: Good facilities. Spa and sauna and gym. Get a fitness passport or city of Melbourne membership and makes using the pool and gym easy and very affordable
Fantastic experience: Great place to swim, work out and get fit, with multiple pools, gyms, spa, sauna and pools. Staff friendly and helpful.
Negative experience: Swimming here almost 30 years. Still a lovely old building and good facilities (except the shower taps broken for weeks). However, SOME of the staff are blatantly rude and I can't remember this ever being the case previously. It's almost as if they don't really care if people return or not. Other staff are friendly and polite so it's a shame.
Negative experience: After over a dozen years as a member I cancelled my membership (cost keeps increasing despite reduced operating hours, broken lockers and barely functioning showers). Was told I'd still be charged for an extra fortnight for some reason (no explanation given) and absolutely no care or interest in losing a membership, let alone a longstanding one. Very sad that the management team post covid lockdowns has lost their humanity. Go elsewhere - plenty of lovely pools in Melbourne.
Positive experience: Lovely pool with a good sauna. Felt like you stepped back in time a bit. The pool water was warmer than average.
Positive experience: It was the largest swimming pool in CBD. The building is so lovely. They provide gym equipment and swimming pool. Good to have a look and see the history.
Fantastic experience: AMazing place for swimming, and the water cold enough if you want swim for a long time. I'll back
Fantastic experience: Great staff always friendly, competent and proactive. Wonderful range of fitness classes, fantastic gym and swimming facilities - all contained within beautiful historical architecture. Just a few metres up the road from the tram stop at RMIT, great for those who live or work in the city.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful period building. The pool area is reminiscent of some of the Victorian pools I used to swim in the UK. A 33m pool to boot. Free lockers and even a swim wear dryer. The water's a bit warm for me, but very popular with the locals.
Fantastic experience: Good facilities. Spa and sauna and gym. Get a fitness passport or city of Melbourne membership and makes using the pool and gym easy and very affordable
Fantastic experience: Beautiful old building, full of character and charm.
Fantastic experience: A great place for us all to learn to swim or be fit. Swim teachers for the kids are awesome! Facilities are well maintained and clean.
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff, nice pool & spa & sauna. I love the old world entrance.
Fantastic experience: It's great. I had the chance to have classes with Ethan, who is a fantastic instructor
Fantastic experience: The staff are amazing
Negative experience: This was the worst experience ever as an ex profession swimmer i’m so disappointed. I had two young children with me 9 & 12 I called in advance to make sure they could come in the spa with me, I was told yes but when i arrived i was told no. Definitely not going back ever, not a good place for kids!
Negative experience: Nice building. Dirty change rooms. Quite good gym. Consistently terrible management and some really rude staff. Some basic customer service training would be a good idea.
Fantastic experience: First time in a long time I trained properly. Very friendly and staff is very good. Unlike other gyms it's just for instagram
Fantastic experience: You look from outside and it looks ancient and petite....but the perception change once you are in. It gives you a whole new sense and makes you realise how wrong you were. There are two pools on either side of the main corridor watched over by life guards. A little bit of walk and you see a Table tennis. You walk down the stairs and there you have a fully equipped gym and a squash court. I mean life can't get any better. And yes I forgot, at the entrance there is lovely staff who welcomes you like they have known you for ages (this was my first visit here). I went for a game of squash and it was worth it. FYI I already booked another session for the next day.
Fantastic experience: The staff are amazing
Fantastic experience: Nice and clean..
