Fantastic experience: I wish there was a gym like this in Sydney! Last week I trained at The Richmond Gym while in Melbourne for a conference. As a kettlebell sport aficionado, I was impressed by the huge set of kettlebells and the spacious studio-style gym with everything a lifter needs - including a great view of the Melbourne skyline! Most importantly, James Ross and the other trainers are super knowledgeable and encouraging, and have created a friendly, fun and down-to-earth environment. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: James Ross has been my personal trainer over the last few months at the Richmond Gym. I came here after having issues with other gyms across Melbourne, the attitude of some staff working at these gyms and the ridiculous fees that they were charging. The Richmond Gym is a far cry from that and incredibly welcoming and supportive. I've enjoyed each and every personal training session I've had with James Ross. He focused on meeting my needs as a client and possesses a wealth of experience in the fitness industry, particularly as it relates to kettle bell. Personal training sessions where interesting and varied, and he was very open to my feedback and modifying exercises based on chronic pain that I experienced. I also had very interesting conversations about various health topics with James given my experience in health promotion. I would recommend this gym hands down for anyone looking to meet their fitness goals.

Fantastic experience: My partner and I went to The Richmond Gym for a number of months. Ash & James are hugely knowledgeable, respectful and make working out fun. The gym seems to attract like minded people and it was a great atmosphere to train in. We would continue to go to this gym, but we are leaving Melbourne. Highly recommended :)

Fantastic experience: Joined 'The Richmond Gym' during my off season just after I had torn my hamstring and ever since, these guys have taken great care of me! Absolutely loved the place and the workouts. James keeps the atmosphere fun with his quiet dad jokes and easy nature. Trained with Ash a couple of times and loved our conversations about fitness. Finally, not to forget their support during lockdown. They helped me stay fit all through lockdown with continuous support. Highly recommend this place to all!

Fantastic experience: The best gym/community I've ever been apart of. James and Ash genuinely care about you the individual and do all they can to share their knowledge/experience. Their strength and conditioning programs are founded in science and with purpose (so rare). Since joining the TRG 3 years ago, I've lost 25kg and gained more strength and movement than ever before. Fantastic experience: I have been going to The Richmond Gym for 4 years. They’re training program is the best. I’ve seen my strength and fitness improve exponentially with them. James and Ash are really dedicated trainers who put challenging programs together, but also cater to individual needs in the class. If I wasn’t moving countries I’d still be there 6 days a week!

Fantastic experience: This is not your regular gym. This is a community! I've had gym memberships for many years because.. well we all want to work on that summer body right. But I always ended up not going as I just couldn't handle the typical gym vibe, the look-at-myself-in-the-mirror types, the rows of machines and personal trainers who were somehow always more interested in the girls, than actually helping me. But then there was The Richmond Gym (TRG). These guys have changed it all for me. I might sound like a fan boy, and that's because I am. Ash and James have truly built a fitness community. From the moment you walk in you feel it's a good place. There is always a great vibe, they are genuinely interested in all their members, they know you and your injuries and they play great tunes (although James could work on his taste of music). Oh and most important: their programs are amazing. Wether you want to work on your strength, condition or what else... there is a program for you. Everything gets explained in detail. Classes are small and therefore they can really help you with your technique. And if your technique is off, they won't ignore that. They'll help you before putting on more weight. Honestly, check these guys out. You'll love it!

Fantastic experience: The Richmond Gym is an amazing place. I started my journey 5 years ago and I can tell you that you will struggle to find a gym like this. It’s the perfect place if you want to experience professionalism, friendship, trust, honesty and much more. The equipment is of high standards and the trainers are highly competent. They would adjust the training program according to your needs, your age, your current fitness status and your goals. Several types of classes are available: functional fitness (the one I did the most), strength, conditioning, kettle bell training and other cool stuff (hand stands!). Prices and flexibility are great. I can only say thanks to James, Ash, Jeremy and the rest of the crew. 5 stars!
Fantastic experience: Probably the best small group gym I have trained at. Most people that train here would agree as well (especially if you have basis for comparison). The guys down here have a very different approach to the programs and truly take time to understand each individual's movement ability, prior injuries, etc., and then do their best to tailor workouts around them. I recently had a small soft tissue injury from working out, and I have had nothing but support/tailored workouts from these guys to make sure I'm back on track. Due to the nature and style of their programs, I have personally seen significant results in the 3 months I have been here. Highly recommend you give the guys a trial.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I have been members at TRG for three years. We have tried various gyms prior to joining and none of these compare to our awesome experience at TRG. The trainers are all highly qualified and passionate. Their approach is all about easing in to exercise, personalization and progressive strength building. They’re not about six week challenges that urge people to smash themselves in short bursts ending in injury! I’ve seen beginners to more experienced gym goers reach their personal best at The Richmond Gym. It’s an inclusive, relaxed vibe which I think one of the things members like the most. I highly recommend the gym for anyone wanting to get stronger or just improve general fitness.

It’s more expensive than the Rec centre, but if you put a price on results there is no comparison. Fantastic experience: I am oversees for a week holiday, and thought I would give TRG a go. My gym back home in Auckland is fantastic so needless to say the bar is high. Joined in on a strength class which was run by James, and it was fantastic! Really attentive coaches and a friendly focused and fun atmosphere! $14 for two weeks as a Traveller is a great price, highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Put simply, TRG rocks - I cannot recommend this gym enough. As a girl who gets puffed going up the stairs to her apartment, and managed to pull a calf muscle while sitting down, I never thought I’d find a gym that suited me. But I’m coming in 3-4 times a week and it’s been over a year! The trainers are super knowledgable in all aspects of fitness and exercise, and are so patient and accomodating. I have a bad shoulder and a torn ACL and have had no issue with any of the classes. They effortlessly have exercises for me that alleviate any stress on the injuries, but also strengthen up the bits that need it. The classes run throughout the day, so the flexibility to do a morning or lunchtime instead of an evening class is a real bonus with my sometimes hectic work schedule. There’s also extra sessions for members every couple of months with mindfulness and nutrition workshops with industry experts, so you get a real holistic view of your own health and wellbeing outside of working out. Most importantly, The vibe is the friendliest you’ll ever find in a gym - I’ve trained alongside powerlifters and grannies in the same class. I’ve never felt intimidated or inadequate, and both the trainers and other gymgoers are really supportive. Everyone is so warm and welcoming, it doesn’t matter if you train twice a day or only once a week, you instantly feel part of the community. To sum up, Ash and James are absolutely killing it!!

Positive experience: i love this gym.friendly staff, tons of equipment for power lifting, strongman and calisthenics. a set of paralletes would be a welcome addition. overall if you love serious lifting without the fluff of silly machines then this is the place for you!
Fantastic experience: If you are wanting a gym that has a structured and strategic approach to training this is a good one. I had always shied away from strength training but there was good support. The trainers are very focused on optimising technique - there’s no cheating with poor form - and generally there are 2 trainers at classes. They can adapt workouts to suit you and also focus on mobility/weakness/rehab. It’s a small boutique style gym with friendly folk. Worth checking out - especially if you are sick of repetitive exercises on chain gym programmes.

Fantastic experience: The guys at TRG are the real deal. You won't find any mirrors in this gym because you don't need to watch your own form; Ash, James and the team will do it for you. I appreciate how they're always close by - advising on better form, coaching and encouraging. They somehow achieve this even in their group session environment. They like to take you back to basics, ensure your form is 100% correct, in particular if you've had previous injuries. My form and technique has improved considerably over my time there. The gym has great vibes with a fun crew and I highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: I can wholeheartedly say I have never been to a better gym! Drawing on their vast knowledge base, James and Ash create the perfect combination of classes and programs that are inclusive for everybody, from beginner through to expert. Always fun, always motivating, and always the good type of tiring! They successfully coached me through a rehabilitation program whilst working closely with my physio, making sure I was included in classes, given my own variation of movements or given supplementary exercises. I have no doubt my quick recovery was aided by the team at The Richmond Gym. Above and beyond that, there is THE BEST atmosphere in the gym, a personable approach, positive vibes, fun and variable training sessions and loads of friendly faces as well. You may join with the intention of getting fitter (which you will) but I’d put money on you getting so much more too.
Fantastic experience: You'll want to make as much use of your membership as you can. Classes commit you to going, the atmosphere is laid back and fun, after a bit you want to go just to hang out, and Ash and James take a strong interest in advancing your workout goals. Equipment and space is in excellent condition. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: Been going to TRG for almost a year. Ash and James help you towards your goals. They have different programs to suit your needs wether it be cardio, strength, functional fitness, bodybuilding, kettlebells or powerlifting. I highly recommend giving this gym a go!
Fantastic experience: Ash and James write all the programs themselves, and are always on hand to make sure your maximising your potential. All the classes are suitable for people of any level of fitness, and small class sizes gives them a chance to help each individual and give everybody in the class attention that's needed. I've achieved awesome results and would recommend TRG to anybody!
Fantastic experience: I've trained under James, Ash and Peta for 12 months and truly believe TRG offers so much more than your average gym. They offer incredible attention to the individual, focusing first and foremost on skill development tailored to personal training goals. Expect to develop greater understanding of your strengths, weaknesses, movement limitations, and become an active participant in improving your overall physical performance (rather than a passive recipient of the 'daily workout'). They utilise varied tools and modalities including kettlebells, powerlifting/olympic lifting, gymnastics, strongman, and a wide variety of aerobic conditioning methods which keeps every session interesting and offers even the highly trained athlete plenty of opportunities to foster a beginners mindset. Knowledge and experience of the coaching staff is second to none. Careful thought goes into each programming cycle, with a focus on functional movement, and varied planes of motion that is often missing in larger franchise operations. But above all, just a great environment in which to train. Coaches and members feel more like good mates and the atmosphere of the gym is so friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend you check it out.

Fantastic experience: The staff at The Richmond Gym catered for a knee related sports injury which had been giving grief for more than 2 months. James introduced various exercises to support the knee from different directions and after a month of following his exercises, I have been able to get back to my sport with no pain. Thanks Richmond Gym for the help.
Fantastic experience: The TRG culture and community is what keeps me coming back, the tailored gym work outs and well-rounded science behind the exercise is just an added bonus! I love the welcome I always receive coming in, the banter, and how Ash and James can always provide an alternative exercise if ever I'm feeling tender or have an injury. Fantastic experience: I love this gym! It's always a challenge to find amazing spaces for functional fitness training that aren't all about the cross fit absolutely smash yourself culture. The classes are so well structured for all fitness levels, from completely new to exercise to those who want to or do compete professionally. They have ropes, sleds, logs, kettle bells, tires, rings, olympic lifitng platforms - everything. The staff's knowledge is amazing as well, so i never felt like i could injure myself while trying a new lift, which is awesome cause I've injured myself too many times in Crossfit. This is the first review I've written for a gym before, but i was just so pumped when I found it! Hopefully, it's helpful for others looking for all round fitness - strength, metabolic conditioning, flexibility and skill acquisition! Love it. Can't recommend this place enough!

James Ross is an excellent strength and conditioning coach with a lot of experience and a wealth of detailed scientific training knowledge. He is able to deliver excellent programs for trainers of all levels, from elite athletes, through to complete beginners.
