Melbourne University Sport: Opinions
Positive experience: Terrible parking and the court surface its terrible
Hi Schultz Family, Thank you for your feedback. Our parking spaces are limited. However, we will pass on your feedback to our facilities team about court surfaces
Negative experience: Wish staff would pick up the phone, had to drive back an hour to find my lost item when it was a simple phone call away. I called 3x and rang it in front of the staff to make sure the phone was working.
Hi Lilian, so sorry you had this experience. We have passed on this feedback to our Guest Services team
Fantastic experience: Amazing facility so safe and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Services in Here are nice ,and there are more facilities than i reckon.
Fantastic experience: Taekondoo Rhee, The Best Club
Positive experience: Convenient gym that has all the essentials for a university student
Positive experience: यूनिमेलब में एक वाणिज्य छात्र के रूप में एक वर्ष से अधिक समय से इस जिम का उपयोग कर रहा हूँ, आपकी ज़रूरत की हर चीज़ उपलब्ध है।
Negative experience: Alex the gym trainer is extremely rude. Has no mannerism when speaking and is harsh. Got told that “I can say and do l what ever I want”. Please teach the staff etiquette on customer service.
Thanks for your review and sorry to hear of your experience. If you'd like to provide more information, please email [email protected] and we can investigate further
Fantastic experience: Lots of students, love playing football in the hockey pitch. Lots of friendly people.
Negative experience: Shocking ground... dangerous surface. No drinks available. University and Colleges could do much better. Provide proper umpires, sell drinks/food
Thanks for your review Peter, is your review based on University Oval? If you'd like to provide more information about your experience, please email [email protected] and we can investigate further
Fantastic experience: Been using this gym for over a year now as a commerce student at unimelb, everything you need. In particular I have found the number of squat racks to be useful, rarely have to wait unlike previous gyms. Good vibe and lots of other students using it which is nice. One recommendation to owner would be to move set-up back to old set-up, I prefer racks looking into the mirror. Other than this, fantastic gym.
Thanks for the review and feedback Adam
Fantastic experience: Lots of grounds
Fantastic experience: Good location by under renovation
Fantastic experience: I was playing football and I grazed my leg pretty bad and was in panic and extinguished pain. Someone called the lovely staff over and Peter helped calm me down and patch me up. That was very appreciated given I have no medical experience and my anxiety lead me not to freak out.
Fantastic experience: A nice central spot to have a hit with friends on the court or attend one of the many social events at the location
Fantastic experience: Equiped
Positive experience: Go Renegades. Love going back.
Fantastic experience: I did one of the classes with Lachie the other day and it was brilliant, fun and motivating class. Will be coming back!!!
Negative experience: I canceled month ago, but kept charging me for no reason until today I noticed it. :(((
Fantastic experience: Really good facilities and very clean
Fantastic experience: Visit the campus in autumn is highly recommended. Each corner shows a new colour in a spectacular scene.
Fantastic experience: Great sporting facility! Clean and tidy amenities, large spaces, good variety of group classes to book. The trainers are awesome and super motivating :) Staff is always helpful with bookings and questions. The gym space can be quite crowded at times but there’s a good turnover. I have not tried the pool so far.
Thanks for the feedback and review Fanny
Negative experience: 10 years ago, this gym easily ranked amongst the best in the state. These days it’s hardly worth the money. The cardio machines are dilapidated and frequently malfunctioning. They don’t appear to have been serviced or updated in at least 5 to 10 years. The generic weight machines are a strange choice, given the previous machines here were top quality. The building itself is frequently dirty, machines often have used tissues sitting on them for days, which is surprising given the last years of the pandemic. The opening hours are completely baffling. I’m not sure who the people managing this place think the clientele are anymore. Other local gyms have now overtaken this once-upon-a-time great institution in equipment, hours and cost. It’s a shame.
Fantastic experience: Great place for a game of basketball and volley ball and plenty of parking.
Thanks for the review
Negative experience: I have been a member of this gym for 10 years and have just cancelled my membership. While I believe the facilities are generally good, there are a number of significant short comings, that mainly stem from poor management and a lack of transparency. This is fueled by the fact that for many years they have had a captive student population as their main customer base and I believe have become lazy in their willingness to listen to feedback and change policies for the better. These can be summarised as follows: 1. Court Hire - There is a lack of common sense and communication with regard to their booking system. They do not provide support for social clubs that have been going for many years. Instead they make block booking for these clubs more expensive and cumbersome and at the sake of the student population who attend. Any communication from the person managing this service is slow or non-existent, making it very difficult to provide feedback and/or submit requests. When responses are received they are usually terse and inflexible. 2. Gym Equipment - In general the gym has good equipment, however, bad decisions on removing certain pieces of useful equipment and placing pieces of equipment very close to one another have been made. Reports on broken pieces of equipment are not actioned i.e. the incline bench remained broken for many months. 3. Poor weekend/holiday opening hours - To pay a premium for gym membership and then being limited to a gym that closes at 5pm on a Saturday and then is closed early and on all holidays throughout the year leads to frustration and having to pay to attend other gyms that are open. I think the poor opening hours have also been voiced by others in their reviews. 4. Vending machines/Products available for purchase - In general the selection of supplements and drinks is very poor and on many occasion vending machines are not out of order. The management could do much better to develop relationship with nutrition companies to stock better products that meet the needs of their gym goers. 5. Staff - The staff are generally friendly but ineffective in actioning requests, or perhaps more likely any feedback passed on to management is ignored. 6. Direct Debit policy - Finally, upon cancelling membership they point out that there is a 14 day cancellation period. This allows them to take an additional payment from your account for no reason whatsoever. Overall there are lots of excuses based on administrative burden that are used to explain neglect. I expect to get either no response or a very placatory response to this review, but nonetheless thought it was important to share these perspectives with potential new and existing customers.

Positive experience: Good conditions
Thanks Kelvin
Positive experience: No parking.
Thanks David, appreciate the review. Not much we can do on parking due to our location within the University, but if there's anything specific about parking you'd like to provide, please let us know here - https://sport.unimelb.edu.au/feedback
Fantastic experience: Nice place
Thanks Theo
Fantastic experience: Love the gym! Can’t wait to get out of lockdown!
Thanks Giannina
Fantastic experience: Well maintained nostalgic facilities
Positive experience: Nice place but they need better air conditioning
Positive experience: Staff are normally friendly and helpful. I mainly only play squash, can get quite busy sometimes. Was told one day over the phone that there were no courts available to book but when I checked online they were available. Squash courts are pretty decent, only complaint I have is balls can sometimes get wedged and stuck between the wall.
Thanks for the review and feedback Luca
Fantastic experience: Great vibes and the volleyball comps are well organized
Thanks for the review Ken
Fantastic experience: All various types of clubs and sports training are on offer.
Thanks for the review
Negative experience: Melbourne University Sport has for a long time published random incorrect opening hours on the Internet. If you consult Apple maps for instance you will see that the published hours are totally incorrect. Also Google Maps hours are often incorrect. And so I have been tricked for the third time into travelling to the centre and finding it closed. I am not happy with them.
Our opening hours are kept up to date on our website here - https://sport.unimelb.edu.au/about-us/opening-hours
Positive experience: not good, was raining too much
Fantastic experience: It's just another Gym... Expected a lot more because of the brand... It's got very good machines and is clean and tidy... Just what a standard gym has always had in Aus. What it misses is the modern day holistic Gym... If you're interested in just weights and a better version of Talwalkers than go ahead..
Thanks for the review
Fantastic experience: My son enjoyed the sports camp here
Thanks for the review, we're glad your son enjoyed the school holiday program
Fantastic experience: Excellent customer service
Positive experience: Great facilities. Note: not all areas are air conditioned.
Fantastic experience: Great Squash courts, very high quality glass front and back. A bit noisey on courts 3 & 4
Positive experience: Melbourne University Sport and Gym is decent place for students and faculty to exercise. There's 4 squash courts, 2 multi-purpose hall that can use for volleyball, basketball, badminton, ping-pong, etc. The sports center also have in-house physio clinic. There's a outdoor courts - basketball, two soccer courts, track&field, and cricket & AFL field. The gym has all the amenities of commercial gym and is connected to an indoor swimming pool. With all that said, comparing to American University this sports facility is quite rundown on terms there's not enough courts and amenities to accommodate the growing numbers of students and faculty (and outsiders). The previous school that I attended (in the USA), the gym was huge, there's 8 basketball courts (also able to play volleyball), 4 badminton courts, 4 squash courts, 8 ping-pong, etc. The gym has wide range of equipments needs of the staff and students. I personally think the Melbourne University sports center needs an upgrade. However, the rates are reasonable for students and faculty comparing to commercial gyms. Overall, Melb Uni gym&sport is decent gym facility. You have to booked the courts if you want to use it and the cost is kinda expensive for students and booking times are quite full during semester. Sorry, I'm being biased as been a student studied at USA University has more benefits than University in Australia.
Thanks for the feedback Joel, we would love to be able to offer the full experience to students like in the US, hopefully one day we're able to do so. We agree regarding upgrades to parts of our facilities too, and are always advocating to try and get support to have them done.
Fantastic experience: Great price and facilities
Fantastic experience: It lives up to the reputation of Melbourne University. Spacious, complete facilities for every kind of sports. Track and field too. Felt like training everytime.
Fantastic experience: Very good staff. Good facility. Everything you need feom a gym or a sports centre.
Fantastic experience: Great place to learn and 0lay sports
Fantastic experience: Great field
Fantastic experience: Healthy
Positive experience: One of the best gyms in the area.
Fantastic experience: Got group fitness programs
Fantastic experience: Well equipped, friendly gym staffs.
Fantastic experience: Good value for money :-)
Negative experience: Unfair direct debit practices. Beware - don't trust them just because they are your uni gym. Also agree with the other comments about the lengthy closure over Christmas where you still get charged - highway robbery written into the contract. It's laughable that they try to defend charging for a service during a period when that service is unavailable. Why is Melbourne University Sport run like a lowly money-grubbing enterprise? Didn't expect a university gym to stoop so low.
Fantastic experience: Have discount for graduate students.
Positive experience: Cool!
Fantastic experience: Everything for the sporty people Open to non students
Positive experience: Facilities are great, but still can't believe Students are charged to use them. Unbelievable
Positive experience: If you can get student or academic pricing, this is a really good sports centre
Positive experience: Edited feb 2019: Excellent weightlifting equipment. Everything is in good condition and the gym is never particularly busy. Other gym users are friendly. Reasons for poor rating: - The gym was closed for a long time over Christmas and the new year. (one star off) - Male changing room was closed for a long time which meant no toilets, showers or changing rooms in the middle of summer (no stars off as hopefully it is a one time thing) - Management has decided to go crazy about people using gym towels. After being given a towel and told I needed to bring it with me or I would be asked to leave, my card was blocked anyway without warning. (one star off). Still plenty of people without towels. Equipment wipes are available anyway...
Appreciate your feedback Gabriel. Students are the primary user of our facilities and with the University closed during the Christmas period, our facilities too are closed. The changing room closure was a once-off due to an urgent maintenance requirement, which luckily occured during a quieter time before semester commenced. Thanks for the feedback about the towels, it's important that all members bring a towel every time they work out and are adhering to our gym ettiquette
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Fabulous facility. I was filling in a class of pilates.
Fantastic experience: I am pretty regular at yoga classes. Gym is well equipped, pool is clean. Nice place. Definitely recommend
Thanks for the kind words and review Gordana
Positive experience: Cheap price the morning for tennis court
Positive experience: The smell is not good
Fantastic experience: Best for unimelb students and staff! Variety of classes at different levels. My favourite is the Wednesday and Thursday body balance classes by Kat and Janet. They’re wonderful instructors!
Thanks for the kind words and review Jay. We'll pass your feedback on to Kat and Janet
Negative experience: Can't the female staff at the front desk of the beaurepaire centre be more friendly and helpful? Every time when I had to talk to one of the ladies there I felt like this was not the friendly atmosphere what melbourne uni boasted for.
Sorry to hear about your poor experiences Mark. If you'd like to discuss this further, please email [email protected] and we'll investigate this for you
Fantastic experience: Great place for workout
Fantastic experience: Best university sports centre in Aus
Positive experience: Clean and comfortable!
Fantastic experience: Gym is great, a good, competitively-priced option for students. I've been doing a lot of the classes and all of the instructors are very motivating and friendly. It's a bit hard to work out the systems and processes at first as there's not necessarily someone explaining things to beginners, but I've just been asking friendly looking people and it's been fine
Thanks for the kind words and review Abby
Positive experience: Quiet and peaceful with all sorts of machines
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, not too expensive. Big pool, lots of equipment.
Positive experience: Upstairs
Fantastic experience: I think they have improved their service! Now the customer service is really good! All the equipments are fantastic! Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Good and easy booking for casual sport
Negative experience: Very poor customer service. I believe the staffs have racial discrimination. Unreasonable charge for so-called default fees. Not coming back again after my membership expires. PS: many gym members are rude too.
Fantastic experience: Good value, includes pool access and has big class timetable.
Fantastic experience: Fun
Fantastic experience: Has tennis courts, an athletics track, fitness classes and gym with nice, clean changing rooms.
Positive experience: I have recently tried a lot of other gyms and decided to still stick with the one in Melbourne Uni. I don’t understand why huge gyms like virgin active and fitness first would have only 2 bench press racks. While the Melbourne uni sport meet all my requirements, the only problem is that the hours are too short for me.
Fantastic experience: Great
Positive experience: Great equipment
Negative experience: Attitude to a customer at counter desk is terrible. Even if the work out and pool areas are good enough, every time I have to go for any reason and have conversation at a counter desk I face the unfriendly personnel who don't even care of anything related to you and their responsibilities. Once I leave University of Melbourne, I would never come back and use this gym ever. It is actually one of the only two places in Melbourne where I do consistently meet lack of service and rude unfriendly people (second is BDM department of Melbourne)
Thanks for the feedback Azamat and sorry you feel that way. One of our staff members will be in touch with you to discuss your feedback and concerns.
Positive experience: Good facility, price is not very friendly.
Negative experience: I cancelled my membership a month ago but I am still being charged. Contacted the gym twice, but the problem still remain unsolved. The "guest service" is basically useless. All they can do is telling you that "there is nothing I can do."
Positive experience: Reasonable price if you hold a Melbourne Uni student card, facility quality is okay. Service quality varies
Fantastic experience: Great facility! Very convenient for students and the membership fee is quite cheap..
Fantastic experience: Super convenient for students (inc. myself) can take a break, work out in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff, then return to study (:/) feeling accomplished and motivated!!
Positive experience: Nice facilities. under staffed.
Fantastic experience: NICE
Fantastic experience: A beautiful campus in the CBD's suburb of Carlton. It has a lovely 'professors walk' that slices through the campus north to south. I recommend the garden near the school of Biological Sciences which is very serene and relaxing. Also, check out the brutalist architecture of some of the early buildings, quite an interesting way of demonstrating intellectual dominance.
