Negative experience: Poor facilities,machines not working properly

Fantastic experience: The Newtown gym is busy at peak times but bright and friendly. I've been enjoying going there to train twice a week over the past two years.

Fantastic experience: Personally the best gym I’ve tried so far in Sydney. The trainers are incredibly helpful and the ambience is perfect. Classes are also very unique with a twist of both traditional and modern incorporations, and very beginner friendly. 10/10 would recommend to anyone wanting to just gym or try out new classes.

Fantastic experience: Would personally like to give a shoutout to Sam - who gave us a tour around the gym and booked both my friend and I to a mat pilates class. He was very friendly, helpful and accommodating to our fitness goals. The mat pilates class was amazing, I personally am not a huge fan of mat pilates as I prefer reformer but this one changed my mind. Would highly recommend this gym!

Negative experience: Staff are awesome, but for a premium place to workout, the cleanliness and upkeep here is bad compared to other places, and all friends who use the gym agree. The toilets are dirty, the dumbbells are always disorganised every day, and there are loose cables everywhere on the floor you can trip on near the cardio machines too. How hard is it to pay a sparky/tradie to make loose cables hidden and safe for customers – so basic. I even got a fungal infection on my hands for the first time in my life using this gyms equipments. There’s dust on the ceiling above the cardio equipment, broken rowing machine never gets fixed too. No fans, and it's often stuffy and hot. The top water machine have been broken for months too - it's like filling up at a leaking gutter. It would be appreciated if they looked after the paying customers better, kept the palace safe and clean and working properly.

Fantastic experience: The facilities, the classes, and the trainers at One Playground are absolutely outstanding. I can’t recommend this place enough having tried a number of other gyms in the area.

Fantastic experience: I have been attending One Playground Marrickville coming up 2 years. It has totally transformed the way I approach my fitness routine. The classes are just incredible, varied, fun and social. The facilities and equipment are top range and I LOVE going the gym. I’ve started attending some classes at Newtown branch as well and they are also incredible. The vibe of this place is the best I’ve known. I’ve been a member of multiple different gyms for the last 15 years and I will never leave One Playground!

Fantastic experience: From the minute we entered the gymnasium we were greeted by the dulcet tones of the English seductress with her high definition facial expressions. Go in for the eye-roll - that alone should sell you a ‘ship. Her touring skills were impeccable and included many an astute observation of the inner workings of the establishment. Obviously trained in the performing arts, our host Eloise practically floated over the synthetic grass as she sung the hymns of her employers. Indeed thought provoking! The fitness! Sold! And the lights. I couldn’t cope with the bland nature of the monotone first floor - the greys, the whites, more greys and silver… But she changed the lights to make it more rainbow. A disco! COLOUR! Sold. I look forward to my tenancy in the Playground/Gymnasium- and looking forward to using the Dyson hairdryers free of charge.

Fantastic experience: The gym is beautiful, with excellent classes and great one-on-one coaching. The membership is transparent and upfront. It’s a 100% honest and reliable place to work out. I love this place!

Negative experience: I have been training at this gym almost every day for the past few years. While the staff are great and the gym looks good, the gym has issues that will impact your training. Specifically the selection of equipment does not really account for the majority of training needs. As an example on the main gym floor there is only a single regular leg press (the queues for which start at 530a). This is true for some other muscle groups as well (eg shoulder press). Have raised this a few times with management to no success.

Fantastic experience: Louise was so helpful, after not going to the gym for a while my confidence had gone and she talked me through some good classes to do and recommended using a PT to gain my confidence and love back for the gym. She showed me how some of the machines worked as I wasn’t sure. Super friendly and approachable.

Fantastic experience: For me, i personally think that this gym is the best gym i have ever been to so far. Everything is so perfect from the atmosphere, location, friendly staffs and the most important is the classes. With the very reasonable price compared to other gyms we can access to classes from early in the morning till late night. The coaches are so friendly and professional. They are really helpful and correct the postures so we will not harm ourselves during exercises. Overall, i recommended to my friends and they love it too.

Fantastic experience: I joined One playground about a month ago and was lucky enough to be paired with Daniel Antonios as my personal trainer. I cannot recommend Daniel more highly. I have come in leaps and bounds in the last 4 weeks. I never could've have got to where I am now without Daniel. He is truly not just a gifted PT but an amazing, caring, motivational person. I cannot thank him enough for supporting me to work towards all my personal fitness and strengths goals. Thanks Danny! Great Gym and great people.

Fantastic experience: I have just joined One Playground in Newtown and the whole experience was great. Eloise helped me sign up and she was so helpful and friendly. The overall vibe of the gym is amazing and has everything you can imagine, including so many classes. Some fill up really quickly but there is always something to book in for. The membership includes access to the Surry Hills and Marrickville locations too, which is great. I’m so glad I joined, I highly recommend :)

I go to the Newtown gym - the staff and trainers are super friendly, the space is clean and the equipment is in great condition and high quality. Negative experience: Air conditioning in this place has become a joke! Despite numerous reports over many months of poor air conditioning, still nothing has been done! Not even a summers day and today this place is like a sauna. Weights area where the dumbbells are, the air actually feels thick sweaty and hot to breath. Premium price increase with the new facility, should at least attend to this issue!

When I've had questions about billing or needed to change my membership they've been super helpful and reasonable. And their PT is excellent quality too. Highly recommend!

Negative experience: Decent gym but be really careful signing up for personal training. I was completely oversold on how a personal trainer would meet my training needs. After my trainer left the gym and I cancelled my personal training I have continued to be charged almost 2 months after! The gym itself is a great deal for the classes available but the personal training has been an awful experience.

Fantastic experience: OP Newtown is a bright, clean, positive environment fit for all levels of physical strength! I've been to a few gyms across my lifetime, and OP is one of the best experiences I've ever had. Dog-friendly, socially diverse, and focusing on my mental health just as much as my physical. If this is your first time getting into a gym environment, don't worry - OP Newtown look luxe, but they have a crew of trainers and approachable faces who are all happy to help!

Fantastic experience: I wanted to be the 500th!! Possibly the best gym I have been to by far. I commute 20min out of my way just to come here. Good variety of machines, mostly pin loaded. There’s a large separate functional and cardio area upstairs

Fantastic experience: I love One Playground and can’t recommend it highly enough to others. The gym itself is beautifully designed, stylish and full of light. It feels very inclusive and welcoming. The crowd is friendly and there’s a real community feel. The coaches are awesome and always greet you when you arrive and are available for any questions you have. They have a huge selection of classes to choose from. I highly recommend Barre Signature with Anton on a Thursday-challenging but his energy makes it so much fun! By far my favourite part of being a member is working with my PT, Lisa. She is such an asset to the club. She is an a skilled and intuitive teacher- I have learned so much about fitness working with her and she consistently pushes me to achieve with patience and good humour. I look forward to our sessions each week. Thanks to the whole team!

Fantastic experience: The location is easy to get to. The gym itself is great designed, I love the high ceilings and there is so much natural light coming in. The space is big and gives that impression of greatness. I feel free in the space, because it's not full of gear and people. I also feel very safe in the space - this gym has a great mix of clients who mind their own business but are also friendly and even throw in a joke. The staff members are super friendly and try their best to resolve issues on the spot or explain why something might take a bit longer. The trainers are great - especially mine. She is amazing! Happy, that I signed up for this gym, looks like it's the perfect fit for me.

Positive experience: Love it here. You will sweat. You will push your self. Great coaches. Wish they had treadmills in the ‘battle room’ for Athletica Fit and boxing!

Fantastic experience: Solid gym overall. The classes are a really good way to add additional fitness routines and come included in your gym membership + you get access to the other locations (loads of classes to choose from for a variety of fitness levels and goals). Has definitely built up its membership base following the renovations but the atmosphere still remains a positive and polite one, if you can get in a little earlier or don’t mind going later it’s always a little less chaotic. Good lineup of coaches available too. I’d always say do some research and look who they have on their website to see who sounds like the right fit and be detailed with your goals. Staple of the gym is James. Really nice guy and very friendly, along with the other staff I’ve spoken with. Nice toilets/showers for the most too if needing to head to work or a function after. Rarely see the tripods and cameras setup with people filming themselves etc, so you don’t need to worry about that either if it’s a concern. Only other feedback i would have is to get broken equipment / maintenance done faster and sort out the difference in weight between the update and downstairs machines ;)

Positive experience: Disagree with the 1-star reviews on here; refurb is great (but yes, lots of insta posing and equipment hogs who take offence to simple questions like, “how many sets do you have left?”, or “can I work in with you?”). Reason for not giving 5-stars: music is TERRIBLE - stuck on someone’s Shaggy ‘90’s playlist, on repeat Otherwise, love it, cannot recommend it enough, 100% the best gym in Newtown

Fantastic experience: One Playground Newtown has exceeded my “gym culture” expectations. I feel more competent and comfortable using the variety of equipment and taking classes. I have yet to meet an instructor who wasn’t personable and excited about fitness. Shoutout to James for my onboarding and continued encouragement.

Negative experience: Why spend so much money on fancy mirrors and lights and DJ booths instead of actual decent equipment? This is a gym for people who want to just take pictures of their workouts instead of actually working out. I regret signing up here.

Negative experience: A gym for insta posing, not serious workouts. For a long time was the ugly duckling of the Fitness Playground family. Has had a reported $4m refurb but the entity of the budget seems to have been spend on mirrors, lights and paint. Probably one of the poorest equipped and laid out gyms I’ve been to. Other gyms in the area offer better value for money, better equipment and in the case of some even saunas and spas for less than a ‘One Playground’ membership

Fantastic experience: From the moment my friend and I walked through the door, James greeted us with genuine enthusiasm, He is incredibly friendly and approachable, always ready to assist with any inquiries or concerns. We absolutely love attending the yoga class taught by incredible Joey Curcio, She always creates a calm and welcoming atmosphere. I always leave her class feeling rejuvenated and grateful for such a positive yoga experience. Overall, my experience with one playground has been exceptional.

Fantastic experience: I never thought I would be someone who felt comfortable in a gym environment but the staff are truly so welcoming and encouraging, James is fantastic. Nathan Newman is a fantastic PT! He goes above and beyond to understand any barriers that might be impacting your gym experience, he works with you to build the perfect suited work out plan for you, not some generic one size fits all plan. I highly recommend him, he’s the best!

Negative experience: The early 2023 renovation was hit and miss. For those that know their S&C, you'll likely be disappointed. For anyone into serious BB you'll also probably struggle. Some examples: Some of the new Gym80 equipment has unbalanced strength curves which makes the LPD and seated row far less effective than they could be (very hard at the start and too easy at the end). There is a Gym80 decline chest machine which is simply not designed for anyone over 6 foot. It also requires you to use a foot release lever to raise the weight so holding anything close to a decent stable position is challenging if using a heavy weight. The plate loaded fly machine is fine, but its just a fly, not a press. The 'standard' flat bench presses have an incline function however unless you use the highest seat incline position, you are unable to adjust to suit your dimensions. For me this means that the bar sits too far back in the rack to be able to lift out a heavy weight safely. The mezzanine level has had mirrors added to the ceiling. A: This doesn't help with proprioception during a bench press (its hard to NOT see yourself). B: Adding mirrors has caused a lowered the ceiling. At 6'4, I can't press a bar or DBs overhead without risking breaking the mirrors. Pre mirrors, this was fine. There are several cable machines on the main floor designed for a range of pulling and pressing exercises however they aren't designed for lifting heavy. The seated low cable (to exercise traps and lats) doesn't go heavy enough (anyone who can deadlift over 140kg, would likely find the weight too light). The pressing cable machines are all positioned so that to use a heavy weight, you are unable to get the handles into a safe / effective start position unless using a spotter. For balance, the leg area is mostly great. However the Gym80 vertical leg press has to be started in the bottom position. If you have long legs, this is challenging. If the lift could be started at the top, more weight could be used. The horizontal leg press is great and can be split to be used as single leg. They don't have a straight leg (gastroc) calf machine but you use one of the other machines. Also, the low / high cable machine on the main floor are excellent but only if you use two hands. They use a strap instead of a cable which means that one handed exercising causes the strap to twist and catch in the roller. They now have a more usable sled track (the previous one was far too congested with people moving over it, not on it. The new one is better positioned. As long as people aren't sitting on it to stretch and look at their phones, its great. They have a set of 10 squat racks however there is a sign asking you to not drop the weights. So if you have any desire to do PROPER PL or OL, you're out of luck. They have two x glute bridge platforms. They are fine if you are small to normal build, but bigger framed / muscled people struggle to get under the bar properly unless you use a lighter weight. Dumbells only go to 40KG. At first I was told they won't buy heavier because it might attract the "wrong crowd" - read into that what you will. Then they said they would get heavier (50KG DBs). Over a year later, we're still waiting. Ironically, the areas that they haven't upgraded substantially are probably the best. The top floor 'studio' area is best described as Crossfit like. I typically find it easy to access on the weekends however they also run classes here so peak evenings (5-8pm) can be problematic. Since joining in early 2021, they have promised an "all bells and whistles - MOTHERSHIP" gym being built in Alexandria. Only now (July '24) are they suggesting it might start being built. If you're looking to just 'go to the gym" OP will probably suit you fine. If you're a strength athlete or looking for sports specificity then you would be best suited elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: Savage gym! Has everything you could possibly need! Sadly I’ve had to leave due to relocating but hopefully I’ll be back. Shoutout to James, a real gent. Super friendly and helpful. Won’t hold it against him that he likes salt on his oats

Negative experience: I wouldn't recommend this gym. Im quite advanced, have experienced many gyms this ones at the bottom of the list marketing is terrible and overly selective plus the type of people in it are jealous and will complain about you existing a joke.. Not welcoming at all.. 0/10 my membership was terminated because i supposedly came across as intimidating by not associating with anybody im focused they simply don't cater to everyone i guess... not enough equipment and it's overly saturated..

Fantastic experience: I received excellent support from Taine and his supervisor in resolving a payment/contract issue. They went above and beyond to offer a very reasonable compromise, which reflects the team's caring and professional approach to customer service. Thank you!

Fantastic experience: I've been a member at Fitness Playground/One Playground Newtown for around two years now, and really value the facilities. I organised personal training with Barry through the gym, which has been awesome. Recently we realised that there had been a slight misunderstanding with my wife's membership, due to a misunderstanding. Taine sorted us out straight away and was able to generously offer a credit to my membership. Really appreciate the standard of customer service at the gym.

Negative experience: All but a facade! Members are just $/number. Large classes catering to a few. Waiting for injury to happen. Staff/Instructors are nice/friendly and can only do so much. Equipment are not maintained.

Special thanks to James for being welcoming and providing personalised advice and assistance to a work out beginner. Anfernee on the phone was also very helpful. Facilities are well appointed, will definitely recommend this gym to others!:)

Fantastic experience: Great updated facility with ample equipment. Real thought has gone into the layout. The staff are friendly and the members are courteous. Cleaners are also regularly spotted doing the rounds. There is clearly a focus on member retention which is refreshing. Oh and another vote for James, the real MVP.

James was the one that showed me around, he was so approachable, helpful and answered all my questions. Spent time with me to explain the classes and organised a coach for me the next day. Highly recommend booking the appointment with him if you’re going back to the gym after a while. Thanks James and one playground.

Fantastic experience: Great gym but their need to play with their new lighting system every day is beyond irritating. Fast cycling coloured lights half way though a heavy lift during the quiet periods of the day is really distracting and the whole thing gives me a headache by the time I'm done. Shame. Otherwise a stellar gym with nice new equipment.

Fantastic experience: Went to try this gym today, super impressed with the selection of the equipment and the layout of the space. 100 times better than where I currently train. Added bonus was the customer service I received while there, which is non existent at my current gym. James that’s signed me up is a legend !

Negative experience: My partner and I went in for a tour of the Newtown gym today and left with a really bad taste in our mouths. The male staff member who was showing us around not only left us waiting multiple times for quite a while, he also kept making weird comments about my partner attending dance classes (insinuating they were a joke/not for men), referencing the reason we needed to train was to make up for drinking/partying all weekend and then at the end became so agressive at selling the membership that it became uncomfortable.. I told him we weren’t interested in signing up to anything today and he basically wouldn’t take no as an answer/tried to blackmail us into joining by saying any offer he was willing to do for us today wasn’t going to be on the table next week if we decided to join then. Overall I can see how someone more vulnerable could be bullied into signing up, thankfully we avoided that and after this experience we aren’t interested in joining at all.

Negative experience: You’re selling me a gym membership, not a car. Coming in to check a gym out and being sat down by a herd of PTs.. all I was after was a tour. To then be told that $200+ was the best deal we would get in the area for a two week pass! LOL. We found much better deals at numerous other gyms in close area. The facility is all show, no substance. Would suit people that still train a very body-builder style. But for people that are more functional, it’s not a gym that flows well.
