UQ Sport Fitness Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Great place
Positive experience: The UQ Sports Centre is decent for playing badminton, but honestly, for the price, you’d expect a bit more. One of the courts has an uneven floor in part of it, so if you get stuck on that one, good luck—your footwork's going to suffer. There’s also basically no ventilation, so it gets really hot, especially during long sessions. That said, the atmosphere is pretty chill, and most of the people playing are friendly and respectful. The bathrooms are surprisingly great, clean, spacious, and fully equipped with showers, hair straighteners, and blow dryers, which is a nice touch. Overall, it’s not bad, but for how much it costs, you’d hope they’d fix the floor and sort out the airflow.
Hi Sarah, thanks for taking the time to leave a detailed review. We're glad to hear you enjoy the atmosphere and appreciated the clean facilities.
We completely understand your concerns about the court surface and ventilation. These are challenges that we're aware of, and they are on our radar as we continue to look for ways to improve the venue.
We really appreciate your honest review and hope to see you back at the Fitness Centre again soon!
Negative experience: It was a while ago so I'm not sure what UQ gym's personal trainer hiring process has been since then. I was paired with a personal trainer. A guy can't remember his name, a marketing student. He was really weird and somehow started texting me after one session? I'm not sure if it was breaching rules by texting clients. Anyway I sent him a long message back expressing my dissatisfaction with his bigoted attitude. He who couldn't read social cues or what completely ignored the message and sent me an equally long message in return, and at the end it asked me if I wanted another session with him? Omg i had no words.
Negative experience: Absolutely one of the shittiest gyms I’ve been to. Which gym has hours from 1:30pm to 5pm on a public holiday Completely unacceptable for a gym, especially for a uni gym. Their pricing is completely unjustified for what you get. With that pricing you can get a decent gym that’s 24hrs.Don’t even get me started on the lock in contract situation when you up through debit…
Hi Ahanaf, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We're sorry to hear you were disappointed with your experience.
Our opening hours for ANZAC Day follow regulations set by the Queensland Government. We also do our best to ensure any irregular opening hours are communicated well in advance, to give our members enough time to plan their visits accordingly.
As we are a student-focused gym, we aim to keep memberships affordable through subsidised pricing from the Student Services and Amenities Fee for current students. One of our goals with these discounted prices is to increase student participation in sport at UQ, and foster a healthy sense of community for all of our members on campus.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and will continue working to provide the best possible experience for our community.
Fantastic experience: Best judo classes in Brisbane. Trust me
Fantastic experience: Best gym
Negative experience: I was informed by staff that I must vacate the court exactly at 10:00 PM today, (because I always leave the court after 10pm) even though my reservation was until that time. This is entirely unreasonable and shows a lack of respect for patrons' time. My reservations should be honored FULLY, and if staff have any misunderstandings about this, I expect them to follow widely accepted norms rather than arbitrary interpretations. I don’t accept any behavior that pressures or rushes customers out.
Negative experience: It's really disappointing that you don't have first aid kit available. I was having pain in my elbow and there was no pain spray available. The receptionist has given me a cold spray and she wasn't sure what that is used for. Don't know what that was. Staff should be trained for giving first aid and at least to recognize what is the medicine used for. Weird that after paying so much you can't get a first aid kit. I guess as per WHS guidelines you must have first aid kit available.
Fantastic experience: As a beginner, I felt really comfortable at UQ Sport Fitness Centre. The equipment is amazing and the atmosphere is friendly. Great place to start my fitness journey!
Fantastic experience: Older "Rocky" style vibe but great gym with everything you need. Staff are super friendly. Just be mindful of the time you go as it can get busy. Best times are in the AM. Only wish they were open later on weekends.
Positive experience: Fully-equipped across multiple floors with every facility you can think of. Very crowded and have not yet found a time that works best. Everyone is friendly, but wouldn't recommend if you want to be in your own bubble.
Fantastic experience: I love the place and it is cheap they got all the equipment I need for my workout!
Fantastic experience: Great classes and equipment.
Thank you for your kind review Donna. :-)
Positive experience: Nice staff, decent equiptment, a bit pricy for a student gym though
Fantastic experience: Great classes and equipment.
Thank you for your kind review Donna. :-)
Fantastic experience: 很不错 器械多 篮球足球羽毛球乒乓球共用室内球场
Negative experience: Have to pay for parking on top of fees to attend club or gym
Negative experience: Have to pay for parking on top of fees to attend club or gym
Positive experience: Lovely staff but very old facilities. They have been gradually reducing the classes offered over the years. Barely any yoga compared to other gyms. The bathrooms get closed for cleaning and for visiting school kids which leaves you without showers or changing facilities. The whole place needs an upgrade and more classes
Thank you for your honest feedback. The bathrooms have needed some major work done in the past few months but are now fully operational. Covid totally disrupted the plans for a full upgrade but plans are well underway!

Negative experience: The gym management is rubbish, no responses to emails, no responses to personal training enquires and nothing. I have been waiting for over 6 months for the reply and still waiting .
Negative experience: Price is cheap but the cost of parking more than offsets this. Majority of the gym is not air-conditioned and gets extremely hot during the summer. Dumbbells on 2/3 levels only go up to 35Kg which is alright for beginners but is limiting for experienced gym-goers. Also, there is always at least one machine broken in the gym at all times.
Fantastic experience: A good friend of mine owns and operates a Brisbane based capoeira school. We used these facilities for a sizeable event. Onsite, the UQ staff were friendly and accommodating even when we were loitering at the end of the night. The facilities are modern and able to accommodate for large groups easily. The gym area was very clean, given we all train barefoot, the bottom of my feet were still reasonably clean! The massive helicopter style ceiling fan helped keep us cool during training. The toilets and changing rooms are all modern and clean too. Would highly recommended US Sports Fitness Centre.
Negative experience: Absolute joke
Positive experience: Friendly service
Thank you for the feedback, Sinn!
Fantastic experience: Great place and great people...I love going there.
Fantastic experience: Lot’of facilities, clean place!
Positive experience: Not very well maintained, the courts are not being cleaned regularly.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic Environment. Staff are very Friendly and Helpful. .
Thank you so much for your great rating and kind review Mark!
Fantastic experience: Nth Side Martial Arts running bj sessions weds and Fridays ,great spot good mats Judo running from there as well as other sports
Positive experience: It doesn’t have good air conditioning at all. While it is a must for a fitness center.
Hello Mahdi. Please let us know what we can do to make your experience more positive.
Positive experience: Very good gym with wide range of equipment, my only issue is that the new seated hamstring curl machines that were installed are very poorly designed with a ill positioned cushion on the upper shin (tibia) presumably placed there as support, this puts strain on the leg bone preventing me from using heavier loads on this machine, i've seen better solutions to this machine where instead there is an adjustable support cushion over the thigh.
Hi there. Thank you for your review. In regard to your issue with the hamstring machine, the cushion on that machine is standard with Leg Curl Machines. However our Gym Coordinator has recommended that you could use the Prone Leg Curl Machine to get specific hamstring growth. Please chat to a Gym Supervisor about what you would like to achieve for specific recommendations. We hope you enjoy your next workout!
Negative experience: Memberships very expensive. Not only are they not 24/7, but the hours they actually are open are minimal. 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday are ridiculous, particularly for these fees. Should be extended to 8 or 9pm at minimum so those of us who work on weekends can actually use the facilities!
Hi Frederick. Please come in and speak to our Customer Service team. Unfortunately we have to plan our hours around when most people use our facilities. We have recently extended our opening hours to 5.30am to 10pm Monday to Friday, but unfortunately the design of the building doesn't allow for it to be unmanned for 24/7 access.
Fantastic experience: Well priced, my plan includes a 6 weekly check in to go over my workout plan or to work on technique. There is a wide range of equipment and machines, with enough duplicates of the more popular things so you don't really need to wait too long. In late 2022 they upgraded a bulk of their equipment which had been getting a bit tired. The new machines are a welcome and long overdue upgrade.
Thank you for your review Jon. We are so pleased to hear you are enjoying our new equipment as much as we are!
Fantastic experience: Rất tốt
Fantastic experience: Rất tốt
Positive experience: Badminton Court Hire is too expensive
Positive experience: It's ok, truly nothing speacial just gets the job done.
Positive experience: Lacks a punching bag in the main gym. Also little aircon make it uncomfortable in summer
Negative experience: Always full, impossible to use a squat rack without having to stand around waiting for 20 minutes.
Positive experience: Nice court for badminton but it's VERY hot in warmer weather as there is no ventilation. There is a water bubbler with cold water available.
Negative experience: Joining and membership are easy to process, and Exit is costly and painful. If you're newly entering, make sure about the terms and conditions of cancellation membership.
Fantastic experience: Gym membership here is great value for money, the resources are good too. Love how my partner can get a friends and family discount since I’m a student at UQ!
Negative experience: I had a very unpleasant experience with personal trainer Elisa, which I won’t go into detail about, but it almost felt like a scam. On the other hand, Nako was excellent as a personal trainer. I highly recommend avoiding Elisa, but the other staff members are great.
Negative experience: Very disappointing and lacking in available trainers with weight lifting experience. You also have to chase them, they don’t even bother responding to training enquiries. The one trainer John was aggressive on a couple of occasions and very strange he gets away with this sort of behaviour at a university gym. Clearly a staff and management problem.
Fantastic experience: Nice gym. Fairly small but they fit in a decent amount of equipment. Maybe not ideal for advanced training, but ample resources for beginners and intermediate
Positive experience: Positive: The gym offers many squat and deadlift racks, which is awesome. Instead of having a grand floor, it is divided into multiple small rooms, which gives the impression that it is more crowded than it really is, especially during peak hours. Negative: The gym should include some hanging punching bags in the open area for members who wish to do some cardio like boxing. It is silly that, in a well-equipped university like UQ, even with a Gold membership, you still have to join a boxing club and pay their fee (roughly $300 per semester) to access some punching bags. Of course, I totally get that if you pay more, you will get priority access to a particular piece of equipment or facility. But really? Some old hanging bags? C'mon, men, you're better than this! Moreover, although the boxing club is closed most of the time (they are only open a few hours a week), nobody can still access their "punching bags." It does certainly represent a waste of resources and is not in the best interests of UQ students in general.
Positive experience: Gym itself is alright, price is fair, but the aircon (only on one floor) feels like it hasn’t been on in months. Windows stay shut so the (little) cold air doesn’t escape, so it gets pretty stuffy. Many of the treadmills work to different standards, some constantly have ‘out of order’ signs, others don’t but are still dysfunctional. Just get functioning aircon at the very least.
Fantastic experience: Uq gym has those world class facilities that you can never find in other parts of the world! Definitely worth joining huhu
Fantastic experience: oly lifting galore!
Fantastic experience: Good shiz
Fantastic experience: Awesome failities. Great staff. :)
Fantastic experience: Best for UQ students
Fantastic experience: Good structure, nice staff and a lot of options on what to do. Super recommend
Fantastic experience: oly lifting galore!
Fantastic experience: Great facility for games.
Positive experience: No back row machine
Positive experience: Great machines, but no aircon in the summer
Positive experience: It’s bigger than most gyms in the area. I free weights, cable machines, cardio and workout areas. The lockers are small, and you can’t bring your own padlock as they have their own locking mechanism requiring payment to use. Showers have good water pressure and can run real hot. Overall it is a good gym for what you’ll need.
Fantastic experience: Excellent quality, range, and amount of equipment. Would be great if it were 24hours but otherwise best gym I've been to in Brisbane
Fantastic experience: Staff are excellent! On campus so very great location. Only one level is air-conditioned, but there are large fans on the other levels. Great value gym for money.
Fantastic experience: Great facility for games.
Fantastic experience: Train this gym for almost 3 years, about to leave uq for another part of life journey, gl people gl for me
Fantastic experience: Best fitness and squash centre hands down in town
Fantastic experience: Good place and nice staff
Fantastic experience: Lots of calibrated weights
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and equipment. Always friendly staff members.
Fantastic experience: Full range of equipment for exercises
Fantastic experience: Gym and cardio: Great free weights section with 12ish power racks and all the weight you could require. They have 1.25-25kg plates and enough room for oly and powerlifts. They have plenty of generic barbells(20kg) plus a deadlift bar, a 15kg barbell, a 25kg squat barbell, EZ barbells, safety squat, football bar and a few trap bars. They have all that you could need for mobility. They provide chalk tubs that are always filled up with a sizeable block. The most useful part of the gym (free weights) has AC but it isn't needed anywhere else because there's plenty of fans and nice cross breezes. They have heaps of machines too. They have plenty of benches and dumbells up to 60kg. They have an adjustable dip station, weighted belts and a few adjustable chinup bars! They have one incline bench, two decline multiple generic benches and 4 flat benches. They have 4 leg presses and something quite rare in a gym these days: seal row/high bench rowing bench. Plus most normal pieces of gym eequipment e.g smith, leg ext, curl machine, lat pulldown, assisted chinups/dips, cables, tbar, ghr, glute bridge stations (free weight and machine assisted), preacher benches, abdu tor machine, calf raises, boxes, bands, ab wheels, mats etc... Plenty of cardio machines but I would rather go outside for that haha. All in all 5 stars and much better than your average commercial gym. PS. They recently opened up the elite athlete academy rooms to the general gym members.
Positive experience: Besidea the gym, there are squash, basketball, volley ball, tennis and badminton courts for hire. There is also a full size Olympic pool to do laps in. Different prices for UQ student/staff and public.
Positive experience: For.being a uni gym, it's small and sometimes all equipment is full. Sports facilities are good. Classes before covid were good, assorted and for.different publics; hope we can.Have full schedule soon.
Negative experience: I had membership before in UQ sport fitness centre for around 1.5 years, and I liked the facilities and the way stuff gives you advice about health. I went there plenty of times to play badminton and to do swimming as well. I was going to buy a gold membership this summer, but my friend bought a gold membership which he didn't use it for once, and he left Brisbane, so I though I would transfer the membership to my name. There are other fitness centre in Brisbane where there are rules for transferring membership, so I went to the uq fitness reception to see whether same rule applies there. The stuff were discussing the rules nicely, but I didn't like the way one of the stuff, JOHN GARCIA, was behaving. He was acting like I am intentionally breaching rules, and he took my friend's ID card as well. Like, you don't take ID card like that and make an insulting remark like 'anyone will use it later'. He could have disable gym access and return the card back. If I were intentionally breaching rules, I wouldn't come to reception, asking for transferring membership in the first place. If the membership was not transferable, I would have bought a new membership at that moment, but the way John Garcia behaved, I lost my interest to get another membership. If you don't know how to treat your customer with deference, please don't do job in reception and ruin there name. But look, overall there service and facilities are excellent, but I didn't like the way John behaved at that moment.
Fantastic experience: It's a pretty big place with lots of activities going around.
Fantastic experience: I don't usually have a problem working out but yesterday I sat on the rowing machine and it sank.
Fantastic experience: Great gym and great ramge of options
Fantastic experience: well equipped and nice pool.
Fantastic experience: It is well equipped and the people is welcoming and helpful
Fantastic experience: Massive gym better equipment availability than any other I've been to. Group Fitness classes about ten a day from yoga to cardio and dancing. Also has a pool to face plant into when humid.
Fantastic experience: Perfect place to get a work out
Fantastic experience: Amazing gym with a wide range of equipment - caters for a range of different exercise.
Fantastic experience: Best fitness centre with a lot of options. Only draw back is highly costly badminton and squash courts.
Fantastic experience: They got everything for those willing to train hard. Full of well motivated staffs and people too.
Positive experience: Good gym facility at UQ
Negative experience: Staffs are really good but the facilities.... too bad...
Positive experience: Perfect on every aspects except the membership. Reasonable membership fee for staff and students is recommended.
Positive experience: Relatively cheap university gym. Good selection of equipment and squat cages. Air conditioning isn't available throughout the entire gym, which is disappointing
Negative experience: I've been training at this gym for almost 2 years now. If you'd like to be a member of a gym that has cold water fountains available then you've come to the wrong place. They're all broken except for the 2 in the aerobics room. Would you like to train in air conditioned comfort? Again, you've come to the wrong place. The bottom floor is air conditioned by the oldest, crappiest looking ACs I've seen. The 2nd floor has no air conditioning at all. The third floor has some AC on one side and they've decided to inexplicably leave every single window on the other side open. They might as well just be throwing money out the window. So much for an environmentally sound campus right? Seriously this is a real problem. After having just gone through the hottest summer on record in Brisbane, I can't do another summer like this with no climate control. Add to that some seriously stinky members... there's literally 2 that if I see them anywhere, no matter what my program is, I won't train near them. The smell makes you want to vomit. Management should speak to them but if you thought this was a well managed gym well... have you been reading this review? Look, I love the yoga sessions but I can find yoga anywhere. I would be happy to keep training here if they'd just fix the dam AC and water fountains but it has literally been two years and they're still broken. Add to that dirty and uncleaned equipment, things that stay broken for weeks on end and you really just have an embarassment to the university. It should be closed down and renovated and everyone working there should be at the least re-trained. It's the worst. I'm not renewing when my membership runs out. Life's too short to train in a place like this.
Fantastic experience: Great place for a hit of squash.
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym facilities.
Fantastic experience: One of the best fitness centres in town. It has a really good gym and heaps of courses, from dancing to martial arts.
Fantastic experience: The best Argentine Tango Course you could ever find is run at the University of Qld through UQ Sport. The best foundational skills you can ever imagine to get in Oz that you can apply later to any other dance, like balance, posture and musicality. Fabulous team of instructors!
Fantastic experience: My favourite community gym in the city. At $15 a week for three floors of awesome equipment that's never packed full it's perfect.
Fantastic experience: Good gym... very complete
Fantastic experience: Awesome
Fantastic experience: Stacked gym with all the essentials
Fantastic experience: This is an amazing gym. I used to go there when studying at UQ. I recommend going there early in the morning, weekdays. There are not too many people around and you're free to use whatever you like. A little pricey, but it's worth it. To me, at least
Fantastic experience: It is well equipped and the people is welcoming and helpful
Fantastic experience: best place for fitness. good courts for badminton
Fantastic experience: Good Facilities Nice Staff : )
Fantastic experience: 下午 人有点多
