The Mill Gym: Opinions
Negative experience: The owner ignored my requests for a refund.
Fantastic experience: Great food, good value for money. Nice spacious cafe just a couple of minutes walk from The Esplanade hotel
Negative experience: Purchased the online programs for a $65 subscription. Not downloadable in PDF format, so its very difficult to print and track your training. Can only view via the website, so if you're on deployment or similar with little wifi, you need to screenshot the website 400 times. Emailed re asking for a PDF, was told there is an application coming soon. So I asked for a refund and got ignored. Programs seemed ok, just a shame about format and lack of communication.
Fantastic experience: I have been training at The Mill Gym for over two years, and feel that I am well qualified to provide an accurate review. I was drawn to train at this Center because of their stellar reputation in assisting individuals achieve their individual personal fitness goals. As a newbie, you have an orientation of six sessions to assess your baseline fitness with respect to your strength, stamina, and endurance. All of my sessions were conducted by Nick Caldwell, the Owner and Proprietor. Following this initial period of testing and assessment, I commenced on 15 months of personal training with Nick, who developed an individual strength and conditioning program. Nick is the consummate professional, and his diligence and attention to detail is exemplary. He taught me correct techniques for warm-up, stretching and mobility, lifting, and importantly, recovery. The sessions with him were invaluable, and the knowledge he has imparted has served to underscore my continued development. During this period, I was also able to avail myself to group training sessions with the Cardio Club Sessions, the Strength and Conditioning, and more recently, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The members who attend these sessions are great to work with, and are focused. When I retested my baseline stamina, strength and endurance, following my personal training with Nick, I found a significant overall improvement in all areas and gained a high enough score to qualify as a Member. I now continue my group training with the addition of the General Athletic Conditioning (GAC) sessions, at least five mornings per week. The programs are well structured, sufficiently diverse, and well considered to facilitate continued development and progress, and recovery. The instructors that Nick has hand-picked to oversee these sessions are all knowledgeable, experienced, and committed to ensuring you get the most out of each session. On a personal level, they're all terrific people, and outstanding individuals in their chosen fields of pursuit. After all, “you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with." Nick exemplified his philosophy of resilience through the unfolding and unprecedented global pandemic of COVID-19. Nick developed online, low gear, and at home programs for his members; and the trainers switched to a one-on-one outdoor style of training to ensure that Mill members where able to continue to develop and progress through this period of uncertainty. These sessions were done outside their normal hours, to ensure that all members were provided the opportunity to train. Unequivocally, these efforts aided in many of us successfully managing through a difficult period of the year, which underpinned our approach to other facets in our daily activities. In a crisis, you don’t rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training. I would unreservedly recommend the Mill Gym to anyone who is serious about getting fitter and stronger, and is looking for the right framework and community to achieve their goals. If you don’t challenge yourself, you never really know yourself.
