Be Taekwondo & Brunswick East Gym

Negative experience: Like others we have also experienced unauthorised direct debits despite cancellation with 30 days notice and no response despite multiple emails to follow this up. We were also incorrectly charged for two classes per week despite only enrolling for one.

Negative experience: Extremely disappointing gym management — unclean, unresponsive, and unauthorized charges. This review is specifically about the gym side of Brunswick East Gym, not the Taekwondo program. My membership officially ended on March 6, confirmed by the staff — yet the gym has continued to deduct money from my bank account, even twice after cancellation. I’ve emailed multiple times and called, but no one ever responds. I’ve now had to involve my bank and am escalating the matter to Consumer Affairs Victoria due to unauthorized charges and complete lack of communication. It’s especially disheartening because my family were among the gym’s first customers when it opened. Back then, under Master Will’s leadership, we did both gym and Taekwondo. I stopped gym classes during my pregnancy after doing HIIT, and there were no issues at all with staff or admin back then — things were smooth and professional. Since Master Will left, only the Taekwondo side has remained well-run (now managed by Master Nora). The gym side however is now a complete mess. The facility is unclean and poorly maintained: There’s dust everywhere and cobwebs on top of cobwebs. No disinfectant wipes or cleaning protocols. Machines out of order for months, including the leg press which has been broken for over a year. The toilet is constantly black with grime — truly unsanitary conditions. It’s sad to see this happen to a place that once held such promise, especially one that’s part of our local community. Unless things seriously change, I’d strongly recommend looking elsewhere for a gym with proper hygiene, maintenance, and ethical business practice.

Negative experience: Stay away! Great instructors for kids classes, but the business is dodgy. Payment is via direct debit, and I ran into issues trying to pause payments during extended travel, and when we wanted to cancel membership. I had to resort to asking the bank to block payments, because repeated face to face conversations and emails were ignored. A real shame.

Fantastic experience: Last night was my first class in over 12 years so I was SUPER nervous, but everyone was so welcoming and considerate even though I'm really rusty so that was really comforting I definitely want to thank Master Nora and all the students for such a fun experience. They structure most things the same here as they did at Hall's way back then so the transition was really good too.

Negative experience: My child got enrolled before COVID and attended classes in person. During COVID lockdowns, they continued charging me for classes that were not provided. I asked to pause membership and received an email stating that they also need to be supported and refused to refund money/credit sessions in the future. So during few years I ok aid for the service my child haven’t received. I had to go to the bank and cancel membership as the Be Taekwondo is dishonest business that charged money for the service they did not provide.

Positive experience: I joined this gym at the start of 2020. I decided to purchase some personal training sessions to help get me back into the flow of things. I had a few personal sessions before they had to stop due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My partner and I supported the gym and continued our membership throughout the pandemic when the gym had to close. By the time I could start using my personal training sessions, we had to move out of the area. I emailed the gym to ask if there was any way I could get a refund for the unused sessions. After a slow response, it was confirmed in writing that they would refund me. I provided my bank details, and after numerous emails to ask when I would receive the refund, I have had no response. It's really disappointing to be ignored. I would have rather them say a refund was not possible. When I stopped my membership, they also said I had to give 4 weeks notice and complete a form. This information was not provided when I signed up. **updated after receiving refund** Thanks for process the refund! I have changed my review score to reflect the apology and refund.

Positive experience: Been going there for a year now, lacking a little bit of equipment but they make up for it with the lovely people! EDIT : Bit of a pity, I originally gave a 5 star review but they double charged me twice on my gym membership which I noticed after I left in January due to moving suburbs. I emailed them and got asked to provide bank statements showing the double charges which I did. After I provided them, I stopped getting email responses. Still stand by my original review though but just doesn't feel too great.

Fantastic experience: Been looked after by the awesome staff and a total understanding of where and what direction I wanted to go in fitness and toning up my body. Definitely helping me strive for the long term goals for my health and well-being thanks to the Be Taekwondo Team.
