The Agricultural Society Oval is located off Ivanhoe Rd on Coolibah Dr. The oval is surrounded by the Agricultural Society Show grounds and Polocrosse Grounds. The oval has two low strength lights that allow some evening activity, for use of these lights contact the Ord River Magpies Football Club. The oval is available for hire through the Kununurra Leisure Centre on (08) 9168 2120.
The Kununurra Multipurpose courts were redeveloped in 2008/09 and consist of 6 x tennis courts, 6 x netball/tennis courts and three basketball/netball courts. At a total cost of $1.2 million, the courts have been completely resurfaced and are fully lit for night use. This project was jointly funded by the federal government through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, state government through the Department of Sport and Recreation Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund, Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, Kununurra Tennis and Kununurra Netball Associations. The basketball/netball courts are left open for public usage; all other courts currently require a booking through the Kununurra Leisure Centre on (08) 9168 2120.
The Kununurra Skate park is located within the town centre in White gum Park. Developed in 2002, the park is lit each evening between 4:30 pm and 8:30 pm. The park is unsupervised and is used at your own risk. Skate Park users are encouraged to wear full safety equipment at all times.
The Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure Centre Redevelopment Business Case was prepared to quantify costs and benefits associated with plans to redevelop and upgrade the Kununurra Leisure Centre on the existing site for the project, including to:
The Cost-Benefit Analysis quantifies a wide range of benefits associated with the project and also accounts for recurrent expenditure and replacement cost. Operating expenditure for the upgraded facility is expected to increase moderately over the replacement period and be largely offset by an increase in revenues from attendance. Otherwise, the analysis provided points to high values attributable to the project, balanced against the need to contain operating costs. Irrespective of this, the analysis more than justifies Council's previous decision to redevelop and enhance the facility at its current location.
The business case identifies a range of economic benefits associated with the project through job creation – particularly at the construction stage – as well as for tourism, local industry (and suppliers), which will be important as businesses recover in light of the recent COVID-19 restrictions and associated economic contraction. It also supports a wide range of improved lifestyle factors. The project aligns with key strategic documents which cover this region such as the State Planning Strategy, Regional Development Strategy and the Kimberley Regional Investment Blueprint and with a number of Shire strategies.
