Our comment from FitFit Australia about Brisbane Martial Arts:

Brisbane Martial Arts (BTC) is a vibrant center located in Brisbane, Australia, known for its excellent instructors and supportive atmosphere. Many users have praised the club for its friendly and knowledgeable staff who create engaging classes, helping students, including children, to build confidence and learn valuable self-defense skills. The clean and welcoming facilities further enhance the training experience.

Highlights of Brisbane Martial Arts include:

  • Experienced Instructors: Highly skilled masters in various martial arts disciplines such as Taekwondo, Krav Maga, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
  • Community Atmosphere: A friendly, encouraging environment that promotes personal growth and camaraderie among students.
  • Flexible Class Options: A range of membership packages and classes catering to different ages and skill levels.

Fantastic experience: We have only completed the trial lesson so far but found the instructor to be kind and knowledgable. Everyone was friendly, the location was clean and welcoming. We look forward to joining up soon.

Fantastic experience: Excellent club. Instructors a very patient and encouraging with the kids. Our sons confidence has grown considerably since starting, BTC is a very significant foundation on which this has grown. Seems there are a few nutters leaving amusing 1 star reviews. Sad they can’t be fact checked as often as Donald Trump

Negative experience: * READ THE FINE-PRINT BEFORE SIGNING UP! * In March 2024, I was rushed into signing up to Brisbane Martial Arts (BTC) by an email that said: “Today’s your last chance to save $170”. I wish I had read the contract in detail first! I would have noticed how completely one sided and unfair the contract is. For example: 1. “Cancellation in cooling off period of seven days will incur an administration fee of $45.” 2. Membership fees are typically paid weekly or fortnightly, but memberships can only be frozen in blocks of 4 weeks, and freezing one of those blocks will still cost an $11 “admin fee”. If you fall ill or go on vacation for a couple of weeks: too bad – keep paying. If you are injured while actually training at BTC: too bad – keep paying, the same rules apply! 3. The training facilities are closed over Christmas. During this time, you are forced to keep paying your membership in full. That’s right, “this period is not eligible for freeze.” 4. Mandatory annual insurance of $135. No Product Disclosure Statement is provided when purchasing this product, probably because it is not worth the paper it is written on. Months after my partner had ribs broken during training at BTC, we are still trying to get the insurance company to pay out. BTC has completely distanced itself from the process, even though they sold us the product. 5. “Any remaining period of insurance is forfeit on cancellation or expiry of membership.” This means that if your membership to BTC is less than 12 months, the cost of insurance is still $135. It also means that if you leave the club, or are kicked out, any remaining fees will not be refunded. 6. Gradings occur every 3 months. These operate on “an opt out system, the grading payment will be auto debited through the direct debit system”. What this means in practice, is that you will be automatically enrolled in a grading four times a year whether you are ready or not, at a cost of $63 each time. The details about the gradings are poorly communicated, meaning that you are expected to commit to a grading before you actually know when it will be held. 7. “BTC reserves the right to cancel membership, without any compensation and/or payment, at any time without notice.” When I dared to question a couple of the points above, I was kicked out of the club without any consultation or disciplinary process. By contrast, the person who broke my partner’s ribs was not even given a harsh word. I have repeatedly asked BTC to refund me for the now useless equipment that I purchased from the club, particularly the club branded t-shirts and pants. Their response has been to stop answering my emails. Both of their official phone numbers: 07 3107 1929 and 07 3177 4550 continually redirect callers to their email system. Give them a try for yourself. One final point: The $170 saving that was touted as an incentive at the beginning of my membership is a pure fiction, designed to get new members over the line before they have read the contract. BEWARE - READ THE FINE PRINT! UPDATE: I now have written proof that they have disclosed my personal information to at least one other member at BTC. This contravenes the Privacy Act of 1988, and looks very much like a childish act of spite. All in all, a poorly run, amateur Administration. FURTHER UPDATE: This is a typical response from Brisbane Martial Arts. Instead of responding to any of the legitimate issues that I (and many others) have raised, they would rather attempt to paint me as some sort of problem child, or anomaly, in a sea of satisfied customers. No one has an issue with how the classes are run. The trainers are excellent. It is the ADMINISTRATION of the club that needs a serious overhaul. This is what is making so many members unhappy. The issues that I have raised above are FACTS. The “quoted” parts are copied directly from the BTC contract. Please DO go through “line by line” the claims I’ve made. I have been trying to get a response to those issues for months. I got kicked out of the club for trying. I look forward to your answers.

Brisbane Martial Arts
Brisbane Martial Arts

Hi John, during the brief time that you attended classes with us - and almost continually found one issue or another - hundreds of other people happily attended classes each day, and enjoyed their training. We could go through line by line the many false and misleading claims you’ve made, but perhaps they are best answered by our members, and in particular how successful and popular they have made the club in the local community over the past 30 years. We now teach not only the younger siblings of children we’ve taught, but the children of people we taught as children too. The many thousands of people we’ve taught over the years that keep coming back because of our great instructors, the broad and flexible range of great value memberships options, and the excellent work that the admin team does every day behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly for everyone, all speak volumes as to how much very very vast majority of members love what we do.

Brisbane Martial Arts

Hi Melissa, we’ve tried so hard to help you, but have had a lot of trouble keeping up with the new stories each week, moved house, dogs sick, broke up with boyfriend… the list goes on… and on. Despite all that, the club’s bent over backwards to try and help you, well over and above that we had to do. You’ve had many freezes, changed your membership type, had extra help from the instructors…. The membercare team has had over 30 emails with you in a period of months - that’s more than any other member - all trying to help you one way or another, and to many of those emails, you said thanks and how great everyone was… but then there was always a new story and a new problem. Perhaps your complaint is however best summarised by the Office of Fair Trading - you made a complaint to them - as an independent govt body who had your story plus all the facts, they found we had done nothing wrong.

Negative experience: Ive recently looked into the costings for my 17yr old son and possibly myself. I've initially notified them Im disabled and have the inability to communicate via phone and to please provide information via email as to affordability. I have been a single father on disabilities since sustaining an injury in 2013. They refused to provide the information without me first takng their despite knowing all of the above then flatout ignored me!!! REALLY POOR FORM GUYS! PATHETIC EVEN!! I have screenshots of the communication via txt!!

Brisbane Martial Arts
Brisbane Martial Arts

Hi Simon, your inquiry said that you were looking for classes for yourself and your son. You did NOT state that you were disabled, nor did you tell us that you had an injury. We tried to call you about your enquiry, but you didn't answer, so we sent you a text and asked you to give us a call when you had time. We have taught people of all ages from 3 to 74yrs old, of all abilities, beginners to advanced, as well as people who have old injuries or some kind of restriction on what they can safely do. It's important to us that people have fun and can train safely, and that everyone finds the self-defence style that is right for them. Based on 30 years experience, the best way to work that out is by having a quick chat about what people want to get out of classes, what kind of previous experience they have if any, what their level of fitness is, and the various advantages of each style to find the right one for them – that is very hard to do by email. Given that you are wanting to participate in a very physical activity (Krav Maga) which typically involves kicking, striking, grappling, wrestling, weapons and more, and have now stated that you have a disability, having a chat about your needs and what the class involves is just common sense. It is also essential for your safety and that of other participates in the class, that you can communicate with the instructors, and ask questions if you’re not sure how to do something safely. You’ve also communicated bits and pieces of the information that we need to know by txt and have never clearly explained your situation. Without that information how can we know how to properly assist you? Of course, after getting all the relevant information, the next step for most people is to make a booking to try a class, which unfortunately can’t be done by txt or email, which again, is why we suggested having a quick chat. Because you did not return several of our calls we closed your enquiry. We make no apology for putting the safety and enjoyment of our members and instructors first, as well as hundreds of people who come each year to try a class. That also means making sure that everyone who comes to try is able to safely participate in a very physical activity. It’s this caring attitude along with the depth of knowledge that has made our centre and instructors so popular with the families of our local community for almost 30 years.

Negative experience: # in response to the owners reply his reply is untrue and i have photographic evidence to prove it. Hi James, it appears that you added your review to the wrong site, or that you have BTC confused with another club. We have searched our records, and there is not now, and has never been a member of BTC with your name or contact details (or even an enquiry). The other details described in your comments are also plainly incorrect and clearly not for BTC. As instructors of self-defence, if someone is threatening you, we would recommend that you call the police immediately (and take your photographic evidence with you). You can reach Police Link on 131 444. We have been supported and continue to be supported by over 50 schools in our local area and that has not changed. One of the reasons why BTC has been such a successful and popular club in the local community over the past 20 years is our outstanding Instructors. We would recommend contacting the Police and the organisation that you have had a problem with, and wish you all the best in having your concerns resolved.

Fantastic experience: Been training for several weeks now and have really enjoyed my experience, great group of people and friendly staff. I was inspired to leave a review after reading some of the negative ones which can be summarised as 'I didn't listen to what I was told' or 'I didn't read the agreement I entered into'. Of course do both of these things and you will have a great experience, they also need to be commended for appropriately following COVID restrictions unlike other gyms that I am aware of in the area.

Negative experience: great instructors their very friendly and helpful. but the owners are greedy and deceiving, they will charge you over christmas holidays when the building is closed, and you can't even attend classes. The joining fee and weekly fee is expensive then you have to pay extra for grading and guards and the contracts are lock in and you cannot cancel it. READ THE CONTRACT BEFORE SIGNING. don't make the same mistake I did I would definitely not reccomend this dojo to anybody there's plenty of better taekwondo and martial arts dojos in the area.

Brisbane Martial Arts
Brisbane Martial Arts

Hi Chris, we're very confused by your comments, particularly considering that you have never made a complaint to us about the service. You also comment that the service wasn't available to you, yet we have conducted approx 5,000 classes during the time you trained with us with hundreds of happy people attending each day and participating in those classes. You frequently attended multiple classes PER DAY as well as using the gym. We believe most reasonable people would consider that you got OUTSTANDING VALUE from your membership. We offer a broad and flexible range of great value memberships options which are popular with the hundreds of families who are members - all are clear and transparent, which is one of the reasons why BTC has been such a successful and popular club in the local community over the past 20 years. Our Taekwondo classes are led by 9th Dan Grandmaster Chris who is the highest ranked black belt in Queensland, with the ‘average’ rank of our Taekwondo Masters being 4th Dan Master Level. Krav Maga is led by Master Gav, who is Australia’s highest ranked Krav Maga Instructor, has his PhD in Security Management, and trains both army and police special squads such as the Counter Terrorism Unit. Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are led by Professor Nic who has been doing martial arts and BJJ for over 15 years and is currently doing his Masters in Sports Science. We are also not sure if you have us confused with something else, but we do not have any joining fees. Like most sports and martial arts, participants have protective equipment - the safety of all of our members is a priority for us and something we make no apology for.

Bernadette Wirtz 5 years ago

Negative experience: I wish I could give this place a negative star rating. While waiting to join the class, my one year old daughter was rudely shoved for stepping over the yellow covid restriction line. Instead of asking me or her to step back, she was pushed back and had the fright of her life, in hysterical tears. She was inconsolable for 20 minutes after and my son was petrified to join. Stay as far way from this studio as you can

Brisbane Martial Arts
Brisbane Martial Arts

Hi Bernadette, the safety of all of our members, and most especially our little ninjas, is always first and foremost for us as a club and all of our instructors.  It’s this caring attitude along with the depth of knowledge that has made our centre and instructors so popular with the families of our local community for almost 30 years. Unfortunately there seems to be some confusion over what occurred, but we hope that the careful review of the CCTV footage as well as checks with other parents who were in reception at the time will put your mind at ease. Your daughter was continually yanking at the barcode scanner whilst gazing into it (so hard she actually broke it).  Barcode scanners emit infrared light which can be dangerous and damage eyes, which is why the instructor asked her to stop and to sit with Mum.  We also note that you had also asked her to stop, twice (at the time you were sitting 2m away and also had your hands full with two other children).  Unfortunately, despite being asked numerous times to stop doing something that was clearly unsafe and that could potentially cause her eye damage, she didn’t (a kid being a kid).  For her safety, the instructor gently turned your daughter away from the barcode scanner and directed her back to you (we note that in a telephone conversation since, you have acknowledged that this was the case).   As is often the case with toddlers, being separated from a ‘toy’ can lead to tears, and did in this instance.  Whilst no one likes seeing little ones upset, sometimes they do things that are dangerous, and for their own safety have to be redirected, even if it upsets them.  For us, safety always must come first, and based on the CCTV footage and comments from other parents, did.  We wish you and your children the best of luck for the future.

Negative experience: I sent in an enquiry, received a phone call and was openly mocked and told that everyone here is very advanced and you only take serious people in. I was looking for something myself and friends could try out, learn something new, at no point did I say we weren't taking it seriously, and for some reason the lady I spoke to seemed to think we only wanted to be there for a month. Needless to say I will not be going to you guys.

Fantastic experience: After a break away from martial arts for a couple of years, I'm just getting back into the whole thing again, which is both hard and easy. I've also always wanted to do some kind of self defence. Finally managed take the leap and do it, and I'm really glad I did. Negative experience: A terrible martial arts school. They only care about money and have turned martial arts into a very commercial business. The Instructors are rude and inexperienced. They believe you can get a black belt by giving them money. I would not recommend this school to anyone unless you want a fake belt in exchange for thousands. :(

Brisbane Martial Arts
Brisbane Martial Arts

Hi Bob, you seem to have our club very confused with somewhere else. Our Taekwondo classes are led by 9th Dan Grandmaster Chris who is the highest ranked black belt in Queensland, with the ‘average’ rank of our Taekwondo Masters being 4th Dan. As you can imagine, Instructors of this caliber provide high standards of training and concurrently high standards of gradings, including black belt, with Grandmaster Chris being the highest ranked technical judge in Qld. We are also proud that as well as being an extremely experienced team of Instructors, they are very friends and always glad to help students learn and improve.

Negative experience: After training bjj here for over two years I feel like this place is just a cash cow for the owners and they don't care about the people who come every day to train. Definitely would not recommend you get roped into their contracts or give them money for anything because there is always a hidden fee. After cancelling a visiting instructor that I had paid to see they wouldn't give me a full refund because they had found a replacement. On top of this they did not even mention it was a replacement, I only found out when the person invited some of us to come train with them since it was called off. Uncommunicative at best and dishonest at worst. Find somewhere else.

Brisbane Martial Arts
Brisbane Martial Arts

Hi Thomas, we were disappointed to read your review above. You mentioned in your review, cancelling a seminar. We're a little confused by this. Although you haven't specified the seminar, it seems that you are talking about the upcoming BJJ seminar. The seminar has never been cancelled, and there has never been any communication from BTC to say that it was. In fact three days before you wrote this, you, and all other BJJ members were sent both an email and a text message, which among other things, confirmed the seminar. We're equally confused about what it is you are referring to with 'hidden fees'. There are no hidden fees. The seminar is something which you voluntarily elect to attend, or not. The fee for the seminar is spelt out clearly in the email you received about the seminar. In that same email, it says that, like for most things, if you cancel at the last minute, you don't get a full refund - both the cut off date to withdraw and receive a full refund, and the amount of refund you will receive for last minute withdrawals is in the same email with all the other info about the seminar which you have previously acknowledged that you received.

Fantastic experience: I started doing BJJ at BTC a little while ago. I tried a few different places, but found that I didn't always feel welcome, or that guys in the class didn't really want to train with me. When I came to BTC, all that changed, everyone was very welcoming. The classes and club in general are very social, but everyone likes to mix it up on the matt and have a good session, which for me at least, is the perfect match. I never leave feeling like I haven't had a really challenging workout, and I've learnt lots of good self-defence skills to. If you haven't tried BJJ before ladies, give it a go!

Fantastic experience: My sons behaviour has really improved since he started classes. That's not to say he was really bad to start with, but he certainly had room to improve his focus. We were very pleased last parent teacher night, when his teacher noted some positive improvements in his behaviour in class, and focus in general. The only thing that we have done differently with him since last time round (when she was less impressed), was start him in classes at BTC.

Fantastic experience: I have been checking out different martial arts places around Brisbane, having recently moved from interstate. Per chance I was at a BBQ one weekend and heard someone talking about martial arts, when they came out with the statement, "he must be Queensland's friendliest martial arts instructor". I thought, wow that's a pretty big call! So I couldn't help myself and asked who they were talking about. Luckily for me, it was a club nearby that I hadn't checked out yet. The instructor was Master Chris. Having tried a class at BTC, and being taught personally by Master Chris, who's happens to be a 7th Dan!l, I would have to agree. He is such a nice guy, and extremely knowledgeable as well. I got a good sweat, and left thinking there was lots I could learn from him. Since that first night I joined up, and it's been great ever since.

Negative experience: I responded to a Facebook ad for a Krav Maga 3 month challenge and received a follow up call from a man - I believe his name was Adam- the following Tuesday, he was very professional. He explained they were booked out until the following Thursday but that I could come in before the class at 6:50 for an intro and then join the class at 6:50 afterwards. After hanging up with him I received 2 confirmation text msg's both for Thursday 11th May confirming my bookings for 6:20pm and 6:50pm. Thursday comes and I receive a text msg asking if I could 100% make it tonight at 6:50 due to them being booked out with a waiting list. I call to confirm whether it is 6:20 or 6:50 I need to be there. The phone is answered by a man called Gerard, extremely unprofessional and rude manner, tells me there is no booking for 6:20 and that they dont have intro classes on Thursdays. I ask why I received a text msg stating otherwise and he tells me he's "not sure about my story". I sent a screenshot of the text msgs stating 6:20 and he continues to tell me I'm wrong before hanging up on me. Absolutely shocked and extremely disappointed, I live local and was excited about the opportunity to train a bit closer to home, will now be returning to my old classes in the city.

I enjoy the facilities they have to offer for myself also. We both enjoy the professionalism and the friendliness that comes from all the team.

Negative experience: Went for the Krav Maga introduction class. When greeted by someone that will be your instructor by saying don't even bother to tell me your names for I won't remember it....does that leave a good impression? If you are asked after the class what do you think and your awnser is that you need to think about it: I explained why and with that he didn't even bothered showing me what packages/times are available just turned around and gave his attention to someone who is super interested. When I didn't leave he asked me oh...so have you changed your mind? Really unprofessional. Maybe I was still deciding but he changed my mind For me. Won't bother going there or advise anyone else to go there.

Fantastic experience: A great place for kids to do taekwondo. Great family atmosphere and kind caring staff will to bend over backwards to help. My kids have been attending for 2 years and absolutely love it, can't recommend BTC highly enough.

Fantastic experience: This is was a really fun experience and I really recommend a trial class if you'd like a taste of the self defence experience, give it a go! The masters are super helpful and nice as well!

Fantastic experience: Been training here for over two years, amazing instructors and great for defence. BTC is contract based, however it works out well when you have so many different classes, not many places offer such a good service. Will be training here for many years to come.

Negative experience: I am really disappointed with the service I just received on inquiring about classes for my toddler. He was being pushed into 2 evening classes a week for 3 terms - and he is 4 years old. There was no flexibility to just try for one term and the manager was completely condescending and called me uncooperative. Also no sense of reality that we are talking about a brand new activity for a 4 year old, for whom fun is a priority - not discipline.

Hi Amy, like many children's activities such as soccer or netball, we offer our classes for a period of time or a season. Using soccer as an example, you generally sign up for a season, which is usually around 6 months (you can't generally do soccer for a month). In soccer, most kids would participate 2-3 times per week, eg train once or twice in a week, then have a game. Our classes operate on the same basis. We do of course offer everyone the opportunity to come and try a class for free, so that in this instance your child can see if they like it, and and you as a parent can see if it fits with what you have in mind, and make sure that you are happy with the instructors and facilities etc. For children, fun is always the number one priority, and as a school that has been offering classes to children from 3yrs+ for over twenty years, we know that too, and the hundreds of children we teach every week and their happy families are testimony to that. Experience has shown that while most parents want their kids to have fun, they would also like them to develop their confidence and focus, fitness and flexibility, and learn self-defence and bully-defence skills.

Fantastic experience: Surprised by the negative reviews. Our son attends Taekwondo lessons at BTC and our experience has been nothing but positive. Staff are dedicated and friendly. The atmosphere is always welcoming and our son loves his lessons.

Fantastic experience: To many reasons to name just a great place to train with friendly instructors and other members

Negative experience: Had a great time at my free Karv Maga trial enjoyed the class greatly. The more experienced students even took the time to help with instruction. I did not enjoy the hard sell and patronising attitude of "Peter" when enquiring about joining the class. They would not let me take a copy of the contract to review and essentially his poor management skills pushed me away from the studio. Thanks for destroying a positive experience.
