Negative experience: They would use all the ways to reach you to make sure the payment up to date(via messages;emails,phone calls etc...)but not inform of sudden change of instructor of the class...

Negative experience: No spa/sauna after a workout is a downer!
Positive experience: I like the yoga calm and beginner Pilates classes here but I feel like the gym is very cramped and there’s no pool or bike class here yet you still pay full price. The reception staff is also not that friendly and it’s weird that they don’t let me bring my friends for the 3 day trial unless I convert to 6 or 12 month membership. I’ve mentioned in the past with the free coaching session when I first started that I would like more Pilates beginners classes but there’s been no follow up or any initiative to do it. Another issue is that they don’t allow external exercise physio that I see regularly (due to an injury) come in unless I pay for a day guest pass.
Fantastic experience: This gym may not be the biggest among all virgin active studios but it’s my favourite. It’s new and clean, equipments are well presented(although not with many varieties). Rooms are new with very nice functions which other studios may not have.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely thrilled with our experience to join the gym thanks to the fabulous Maddie! She nailed it with her sparkling enthusiasm and expert knowledge, guiding us through all the cool perks and benefits of VirginActive like a true pro. Negative experience: I am so disappointed with my decision to become a member of this club and I’ve been with them for a year. Every time I asked them to freeze my membership they would say they already processed the payment for the next two weeks so I can’t do that. Same with canceling the membership!! Not to mention you can’t just cancel, it will take from 3-5 business days for the manager to call you to check if you still want to cancel and all these time of course you are paying for. It’s a place where they would never go extra mile for you ,on the contrary they will make every excuse to not help you with anything. And I am not even mentioning that the gym is tiny and lacks some of the basic equipment. I would never recommend VA to anyone honestly.

Positive experience: Joined here after years of weight-train to add yoga to supplement my fitness. The classes and instructors are good. The gym floor is very disappointing though its quite small and missing equipment. I can work around it and go at times when its not busy however it seems to be getting busier and people taking up multiple equipment at once so its a lot harder to train now ( I actively avoid weekends now ). Been to other virgin actives such and they have a much larger gym floor and also extra types of classes e.g. spin class or a pool. So i'm quite baffled how we're paying full price for a reduced offering. Considering cancelling my membership when the 12 month contract ends.

Positive experience: I have been training here for over a year and I am overall happy about the envirolment, classes and trainers. I am happy about the Sound bath new class but I am nver able to join due to my work schedules. It would be great to have a Sound Bath class on Saturday at 3pm instead of yoga calm. I'm sure i will not be the only one appreciating it.

Negative experience: Why does the “grid” class take up more space than the entire cardio and free weight section? Terrible design and results in barely any machines

Positive experience: Overall good experience. Points to improve: -needs to answer fast emails. -more machines (aduction machine). -more pilates class. -more classes Friday evening. -more maintenance ( lot of lockers are always not working and there are no signs of out of work). -canceled classes should be informed a good time early or the coach should have a substitute. All the other coaches I met are really good, kind and professional. For the price range I believe these are reasonable requests to be solved.

Negative experience: It’s a great gym just very very small. If you can get into a class it’s all good but if you want to use the weights area avoid before work and after work hours as it’s chaos.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to the St Leonards branch of Virgin Active for just over 6 months and am loving it. A lot of yoga studios closed down after the start of the pandemic so I turned to going to a gym and have been delighted with Virgin Active's offerings. Virgin Active have a new dedicated yoga studio with highly experienced yoga teachers that embrace both the spiritual side of yoga and a very good workout. Virgin Active's yoga teachers work together on monthly themes and weekly pose focuses which ensures great continuity between classes and teachers. I'm also really happy with the reformer pilates classes. All pilates teachers are highly experienced and take the time to explain activities and correct you when needed. I've attended pilates classes at other gyms before and never had this level of attention from the instructors, which is super important to prevent injury. All in all, I'm really happy with this gym and recommend it to all my friends and family.

Positive experience: This review is based on my first impression only: 5 out of 5 - Gym floor staff and reception: This is probably the best asset Virgin Active has. Very friendly, welcoming, and respectful. This is unfortunately quite rare in several nearby gyms, including Fitness First, BFT, and Jetts. Keep up the good job. Thanks Edwin, for your overall introduction. 5 out of 5 - Hygiene, locker room, and overall look: The gym is super organized and clean. The locker room is as tidy as my parent's house. 3.5 out of 5 - Grid gym floor group class: Very organized but quite dull and unfriendly. No one came to check in to see if you are okay or have any problems. I join classes for being social too, but it seems like the classes are not targeted to be community-based. I'm comparing this to F45 classes which are super uplifting with a caring team. (Well, the prices for F45 are ridiculously high, so you can't really compare these two. my bad) 3 out of 5 - Space: The gym floor is quite small, I mean very small. This is the only reason that made me think twice before joining the gym. Why would they allocate such a small place for weights? Maybe it's the strategy to attract people to classes rather than the weight room? I'm a gym junkie and this is quite important to me. Overall, I think it's a pretty amazing gym with a weight room, HIIT classes, boxing, and friendly staff. Depending on your goals, it could be the best in the neighborhood with it's current price. However, it's just not for me since I need lots of space while training in the weight room. I do plenty of combos, supersets, and back-to-back exercises.

Negative experience: Worst customer service. Go to any other gym than this one. They don’t let you into classes unless you’re more than 1 min early, they don’t respond to emails, endless issues.
Hi Rebecca, sorry to hear about your experience. We do start our classes on time and require our member to be in the class ready to go by the time the class starts. This is to ensure the overall experience for the rest of the class members is the best it can be. We do allow for our members to enter the class right up until the actual start time of the class or until the door is closed and the class has begun. I hope you were able to enjoy one of our other classes if you were not able to attend this one. If there is anything else we can assist with then please let us know.
Fantastic experience: Joined St Leonards since it opened. Living just around the corner, I try to maximise my membership attending a class at least once a day. The trainers are really encouraging and they make the classes as diverse as possible. The staff are really friendly and helpful. I suffered an injury some months back and received attention and treatment right away. Great community and definitely not for posers.

Fantastic experience: Provides all exercises.They have great trainers in all areas.I have to leave a personal comment today. Opal today held a strength class for some of us just to help us out. It was very informative and helpful especially to those of us who need to learn how to do weights properly. Thank you!! Highly recommend the gym and Opal though I don't want him to be booked out!

Negative experience: Won’t let you in a class if you are 1 min late, even if the class did not start yet. Won’t offer you any options, meaning that you could potentially travel there… for nothing. Rules are rules, but what a poor experience when rules are applied by robots… Also very limited choice of classes.

We do ask our members to arrive early for classes as they do start punctually, but I do know how frustrating it can be when you have just missed one. We do try to be constant to our members on this point so we can ensure the best experience to those in the class. Negative experience: AVOID! This place has pathetic service, they are really good at sales but when it comes to customer service they’re really poor. I joined about a month ago and I wasn’t informed about the rule that you can’t be more than 60 seconds late for a class. I arrived at 6:41 pm for a 6:40pm Reformer Pilates class and was denied entry. They should take out time to inform their new joiners about these these rules! Actually, I came at 6:38pm and had to buy virgin active grip socks for the reformer class and even then the staff didn’t inform me that they had this rule. They should 1) inform us before hand of these rules (or prompt us online once we book the class) 2) offer some flexibility if they haven’t instructed us and we are a few seconds late (literally) for the first time. We travel a distance to make it to these classes, and to be turned away in this manner is very disrespectful and completely unnecessary.

Negative experience: The reception didn’t let me in to a class because I was 2 min late arguing that’s a health&safety issue. I used to be a PT and know a protocol and never seen anything like it across other gyms in Australia. For $70 per week I’d like to be able to be 2 min late and speak to a person, not a robot just repeating the same thing. Hard pass.
Hi Anna, we appreciate you didn't get to the class you wanted, but we do have a rule that requires members and guests to be on time for classes. This ensures the best experience for our class goers and does not disrupt the class when it is underway. I know this can be frustrating when you are a little late, however it is important to our members that we are consistent with our rules. Positive experience: Lovely staff yes. The space is very small for a suburban gym, with no cycle studio. There is a boxing studio, Pilates and yoga studio - I found instructors a little inconsistent - some are a lot tougher and some are way easygoing. The gym opens quite late on the weekend (7am) and 530am on weekdays. Classes start a smidge later than that so if you’re an early morning workout person there are other places which would better suit. With so much competition around st leonards it is hard to figure out what this gym offers as a competitive advantage.

Negative experience: This gym is too small and the air quality and air conditioning is very, very poor. Every time I visit I feel hot, sick, and like I can’t breathe. The equipment is sparse (I have seen literally 1 elliptical in the entire gym) and it’s placed very close together. Seems focused on group classes, as they carry this out in the middle of the small gym floor, and it’s very loud and smelly from people sweating in such a confined space. It’s convenient but I don’t recommend.

Negative experience: Membership terms are very misleading, they don’t inform you of the cancellation fee. Please note if you are even a minute over the “cool off period” you will receive countless emails enforcing you to pay $300. No flexibility for new members who are unsure of their terms and conditions as this gym is very profit driven. The managers weren’t of any assistance either.
Fantastic experience: Friendly trainers and receptionists like Maddie, Caitie and James Morris who always make you feel welcome. Enjoyable varied classes to suit all fitness levels. Good facilities for personal training sessions. I used Huhu for one on one PT to work on some old injuries and he was really great. Free parking under the building is a bonus on rainy days. Grid classes with Callum are always challenging but rewarding for your fitness. I enjoy Yoga with Clare, Mahsa, and Kate. They are very professional. It is a smaller gym, but I like that because there are small class sizes. You need to pick your time to go if you want to do your own weights session as the weights area is quite small. I've been a member for over 3 years now and it is nice that the trainers and staff say hello when they see you around.

Positive experience: Quite small and cramped. Like a warren. Seems to have ongoing water leak issues which is the fault of the building even though it's a brand new building unfortunately Virgin have rented or bought into one of those brand new (but very cheaply made/designed) developments. There are puddles of water on the floor which they are trying to contain with towels. Not Virgin's fault just that is the way with new developments these days, made to cut costs and have structural and quality issues from the start. They have the weights area in the same area as the high intensity area they don't actually have a separate room for aerobics and things like that which means that there is extreme noise a lot of the time. Changing rooms are nice, but again, cramped. Is kept clean. I like the way they play relaxing music in the changing room which is different to the music on the gym floor. That's cool. I would not bother signing up to this gym unless I was usually going to one of their other outlets. This one is just too cramped.

Fantastic experience: Great gym with good class options, made even better by the staff who work there...and hopefully thats acknowledged and noted by Head Office management too! There are a lot of fitness options in the St.Leonards area, but the team there inc Reception, Floor, and Trainers ensure that this gym is the best it can be from arrival to leaving. Every time its a good experience and I've never been disappointed...unless they add extra burpees to a training session! Well done all and thankyou.

Fantastic experience: Really good gym and atmosphere! I've had a couple of PT Sessions with Myrik and I can honestly say he is the best trainer I have ever had. He really ensured I was taken care of, he pushed me to my limits and most importantly I enjoyed the sessions a lot! Thank Myrik for all the hard work you put into our sessions. Fantastic experience: Absolutely love this gym - All the staff here are so lovely. Matilda was so helpful in signing me up and welcoming me and making it a comfortable experience. Isaac and Mikayla are always smiling at reception. The boxing classes with Alessandro are awesome Bathrooms are beautiful and sparkling clean along with the gym floor. Such a great experience here!

Negative experience: I used to go to this gym a couple of years ago and I had the worst experience ever! One day, I discovered that I’d been charged for pilates socks without buying one! I called the gym immediately and discussed the matter. The guy told me that he had checked the camera, it was me who bought the socks!! I explained that I hadn’t purchased any socks, but he insisted that it was me and the lady in the camera matched the skin tone of my membership photo. Guess what?? I had no photo on my profile, and the guy was lying. I can’t say how upset I was. He was so rude, and he accused me of lying. I told him that I would sue them for false accusations and racism and visited the gym the same day. The guy I spoke with on the phone wasn’t there. It was his manager who talked to me. I asked him to show me the camera footage, but they said they couldn’t. I asked him to check the recording of my conversation with his employee to confirm how rude he was, but he said they didn’t record the calls. He mentioned that by seeing me in person, they realised I wasn’t the lady who bought the socks and were happy to refund the cost. I asked them to cancel my membership immediately, as I didn’t want to experience the stress and anxiety of meeting the rude guy anymore! The funny thing is that they didn’t refund my money on time, and I had to follow up with them once again to get my money back. I don’t recommend this place at all unless you don’t mind they create such traumas for you.

Fantastic experience: Great smaller gym that offers a lot of classes at difference times. Have been with them since they opened. Friendly staff from the moment you walk in - smiling faces and great instructors. Venue is always clean from the bathrooms to the studios. Keep up the great work.

Fantastic experience: Hands down one of the best gyms I've been to, being a small gym you get to know everyone and always feel welcomed. Great culture and incredible atmosphere!! Massive shout out to Myrik, one of the PTs. Very knowledgeable about training, rehab, mobility and pushes you to your limit. If you're after someone who can bring the best out of you, I highly recommend him!

We currently have lots of availability on our St Leonards timetable, give us a call at the club (0283722701) and we can assist you getting in to the classes you are interested in. We also have 7 day advanced booking system which means helps most members book and attend the classes they want to.
Fantastic experience: The best gym I’ve been to! I’ve tested a lot of gyms in the area and this one is by far the best. I love the layout, the classes, and most importantly the staff! I always feel comfortable and welcomed by the friendly trainers and receptionists. A special mention to Myrik, the best PT out there! So much knowledge to help me through my training, even injury rehab and mobility work. Thanks for all your help, highly recommend!!!

Fantastic experience: My personal trainer, Myrik, has been extraordinarily patient and instructive, helping me stave off older age(!) and improving my running. He has really been diligent in addressing my many weaknesses - wonderful! Virgin Active St Leonards has been safe, clean and uncrowded, through the last 2 years, and the team always cheerful and friendly!

Fantastic experience: I never exercise in my entire life until I signed up in VA. Boxing and Grid helped me get into shape, coaches are so pros and approachable. Magic Myrik helped me become more confident in pushing myself physically and mentally. Staff are so friendly especially Damien. Shout out to the VA community.

Fantastic experience: Been a member here since they opened. Before that I bounced around different gyms for years, but VA is where I have really been able to get results. Great club. Equipment and amenities always clean and well maintained. Staff are always helpful and super friendly especially Damo. Always great PT sessions with Magic Myrik. Great selection of classes to do. Boxing definitely my favourite - great program and coaches are awesome. Definitely would recommend giving it a go! My wife really enjoys Grid: Aerobic

Fantastic experience: Virgin doesn’t have the biggest gym floor but has everything you need and makes up for it in great classes, friendly staff and not full on gym junkies. Highly recommend for any level of fitness as all the trainers are accomodating. I love Kerry’s Grid (45 min HIIT and Boxing!)

Fantastic experience: Immaculate facilities! From staff to hygiene, this is one of my favourite gyms to visit. Towel servicing has my tick of approval along with the class timetabling! If you are looking for a clean gym to workout, shower and head off this is the place to be.

Fantastic experience: Sam is the best PT in Australia. So energetic, fun and personable.
Positive experience: A very conveniently located gym with some lovely studios. The boxing and yoga rooms have a great ambience with lots of classes offered at different skill levels. The change rooms are clean and neatly laid out. Austen gave me a great tour of the facilities and was very helpful in answering my questions. This seems like a great gym for if you’re interested in taking lots of group classes often enough to justify the higher cost.

Negative experience: Good little gym. So annoying that everyone has to put up with the private boxing lessons in the middle of the weight area. BANG BANG BANG.. Don’t you have other rooms?

Negative experience: One of the tiniest gym facilities I’ve ever seen - more space is allocated to hallway space than the actual gym floor - clear example of prioritising the visual and brand over actually being functional. Business policies clearly put profit ahead of customers - one of the least customer-centric gyms in the industry - inflexible cancellation and freeze policies and staff who just throw the contract at you at every point.

I would highly recommend this gym and the classes for over 50s. Its not a iron pumping cutey lycra place, its a keep active place and very accepting of all levels
Positive experience: Very small compared to other locations, so it is hard to have a proper distance from one another

Negative experience: Before joining, I told the staff I would need to cancel my gym membership in 3 months and don't want to pay cancellation fee. They promised me no cancellation fee, special rates and got me on a contract. I now need to cancel my membership but they're charging me $300 and offer no help despite their staff messing things up! This gym is not worth the headache
Negative experience: I bought a 5 class Pay As You Go pack in August 2020. I had lots of trouble booking into classes and spoke to their team many times, without the issue really being resolved. I was also told that my pack had expired, but my contract (and initial understanding) was that it was valid for 6 months. They have now discontinued the option to Pay As You Go. The staff were all very friendly when I spoke to them. I used the gym floor twice - it was very clean and the equipment was new, but the space was too small.

Positive experience: Pro's: great facilities and group fitness options, staff are great. Con's: very small gym, classes fill very fast and expensive. Way to many members based on the size (lack) of this gym. Make sure you book your classes 1 week in advance to avoid disappointment.
Fantastic experience: A delightful and refreshing facility I suppose what makes this place different from the Fitness First which I was a member are the trainers and the people. Sure the facility is new and they are extremely well-maintained the classes are fun and offers a good variety. However my experience is highlighted by the numerous times the trainers would jump in to correct or to offer support while I was doing my session in the gym floor. Big shout out to Katie and Callum both whom are very visible. The facility is small compared to it's sisters club so you have to be very strategic in when you book/go.
Negative experience: Went in there once having just moved to the area, and it was the smallest gym area I have ever seen, let alone the fact it’s a VA. I went in with my boyfriend and there were no available machines, of course half were not being used due to covid which is fair enough but I’ve never seen so few machines and such a tiny area. There was also a class going on in the old free weight area, so couldn’t even do what I wanted to on there. I know VA will respond to this saying it’s a certain kind of gym, but when I go to the gym I want to be able to choose how I work out and have that option, regardless of ‘what kind of gym’ this one is. we left due to not being able to use the area. Such a shame

Negative experience: I was pretty keen on joining this gym, it looks lovely and they seem to offer a good range of classes. but I can't seem to get any reply via their sign in offering or on the phone?. I physically went in and was advised that they don't offer trials :( I wouldn't sign up without trying first, as you don't know the quality of classes or whether it's possible to get a place in ones that suit your timetable. It's a shame.

Fantastic experience: My daily gym with amazing facilities! The gym space is only medium sized though and definitely not as big as their pitt/margeret st branches. Facilities always clean and well staffed and classes cater for everyone.

Fantastic experience: Very nice, clean, good looking club with great, kind and always ready to help staff. Recently I had boxing class and I enjoyed it very much despite the fact that next day I was in pain ;) Now I know that I need to workout more regularly. I can see that some people say that this club is too small but I like it how it is. Club does not have to be big to provide proper service to its members. Everything depends on staff and facility maintenance. So far its on high level, so keep it like that and Richard Branson will be proud of you :)

Positive experience: + Very nice and helpful staff, nice Dyson hairdryers in the changing rooms & obviously new equipment. Minutes from st Leonards station. - The space is just so tiny (think this is the smallest VA I have ever been to) and it is so much less that you get (limited equipment, obviously no pool as in all new gyms opened this year, no cafeteria where you can sit and have a quick snack/wait for your friend to finish workout etc etc) for the same price you pay going to The Pitt Street gym. They encourage people to go to Pitt street for a pool option which is already overcrowded and going through renovation. That would great if you guys consider expanding the area to accommodate the influx of people switching from different gyms to make sure that the experience they get with your gym would be as enjoyable as in others.

We appreciate your callouts, and yes St Leonards is a different club than Pitt St. St Leonards is about the group exercise experiences offered: Boxing, Reformer Pilates, Yoga and Grid Training all-inclusive in the price of your membership. Our gym floor is smaller than Pitt St and some of the other clubs, but progressive (gone are the days of rows and rows of machines that get you the same results over and over). And you're right, many of our membership plans allow you to visit other clubs so you have access to everything that Virgin Active has to offer. Good news! Pitt St renovations are complete and the new change rooms are beautiful! Positive experience: The classes are amazing as are the instructors. The booking system is fantastic. Great customer service. And the gym isn’t overly crowded. However if classes are not your thing, don’t sign up. The weight and gym itself area has a serious lack of equipment. Literally one leg exercise equipment (a leg curl) some okay upper body equipment, and a lot of free weights and cardio machines. The equipment is great and modern, but only one leg exercise machine is very disappointing. I was also told when signing up that this gym has 3x as many weights as my old gym, which it very clearly does not.

Positive experience: First visit as a member, lockers didn’t work at the female changing room and took me some time to find one actually works, because of that I was 2 mins late for the class and I was not allow to attend. I understand it’s a new centre and things like locker doesn’t work could happen, I also understand I was “late” for the class so I wasn’t allow in. However, it was because I spent some time to find a locker actually works, I could have attended the class on time if I didn’t attempt to put my belongings in the locker. They did offered me the next class but it is going to be an hour later and I was unable to make it. Staff could be more customer service focus instead of telling me they can’t do anything about it and giving me a strike. Thankfully there is one staff at the reception who was very helpful and able to fulfil my requests, she also promised to look at the lockers after I’ve asked. It wasn’t a pleasant visit for the first time, the centre is new and it could be more flexible with cases like this, I only sign up virgin a week ago but I am very satisfying with the centre in the city at Bligh Street and I didn’t have any issues with their lockers. It would be helpful if the St Leonards centre could provide alternatives to members and help them to out with problems like this, I hope they improve in future.

They are very similar to the Bligh St, so we’re sure they’ll be easy for you to use! Secondly, we know it’s not ideal to miss a class based on circumstances out of your control. It is true, we have a strict late policy, because we don’t like to disturb the members in class once it gets started. Fantastic experience: I think the club will do well in promoting the diversity of classes. Most people will get a better outcome from supervised and instructor led classes than standalone, especially if they are trying to fit around work. It's a smaller club than most of other Virgin Active clubs, excluding Barangaroo, but there are studios where most members are expected to go. Finally a club in the North Shore and it opens on weekends as well.
