Barry's - Surry Hills: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Great place for a workout! Challenging but lots of fun and perfect for those days you just want to not think and get a good workout in. Small note, their showers are a bit smaller than their Martin Place and Kings Cross studios though
Fantastic experience: First Barry’s class here. Arrived well ahead of the class to ensure I knew what to expect given my expectations of the class. The team were great giving me a tour, talking through equipment and explaining how the class would work. Kate was great in the class and looked out for me.
Fantastic experience: great place to exercise and get endorphins boost
Fantastic experience: I love the Surry Hills studio! The FOH staff are so friendly and the trainers are all amazing- special mention for Kate, Chelsea and Alicia- they always bring electric energy, vibes and music. Literally you cannot go wrong with a class here!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely love it! Such a vibe and great start to the weekend. Chelsea and Nayan in my opinion are unrivalled in terms of their energy, music, lights, the whole thing! I always come out buzzing. Thanks guys!
Negative experience: Music is extremely loud and impossible to hear instructions so you can only work out what to do by copying other people. The red lighting makes it unsafe you can’t see what you’re doing. The booking system is easy but you lose a class for “late cancellation” which isn’t really late and I think is archaic. Busy people busy lives make it easy for people. The staff are nice and the facilities modern but I won’t be continuing.
Hi Lauren, we are sorry to hear that your experience of the Red Room did not meet your expectation. Since our very first class back in the late 90s, a club-like atmosphere has been a part of the Barry's Experience. It's very much a part of who we are but understand that a high volume may not be for everyone. For this reason, we provide complimentary ear plugs at the front desk. Additionally, each and every class at Barry's takes place under our famous Red Lights that provide our signature Red Room Experience. The Red Room can be dark but we always want to make sure you feel safe and our instructors and desk team are available to help you navigate the room for the best experience possible. If you have any additional questions, please email us at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Clean facilities and showers, friendly staff and teachers, welcoming to newcomers
Fantastic experience: Best workout in Sydney!!!
Fantastic experience: Obsessed!
Fantastic experience: Great classes and great people to do them with! Also heaps of new campaigns and fitness goals coming out all the time. Can’t improve on what is already perfection.
Negative experience: Designed to injure you. No proper pre-workout stretch and warm up. Straight into sprinting from cold. Lights off a lot of the time cannot see the tread. No posture correction or feedback within the weight lifting segment. Spoken voice is so distorted/loud on the speakers that it is difficult to understand. Extremely tight quarters. Music is techno only (feel like I’m listening my dad’s pop records but only remixed at 160 bpm). Yes, it hypes you up, but Barry’s is not a “great” workout. It’s a novelty. It gets the job done but it’s gonna pull or tear a muscle. You guys can do better. For one thing add another instructor to the lesson. You guys make enough at 40 x 22 people - can’t you afford it?
Fantastic experience: Can’t fault this place. It smells amazing it’s always clean the instructors are all guns and they each have their own individual programming flavours so you don’t feel like you are doing some generic workout. Music is incredible. Not cheap but when you think about what you get it’s actually pretty good value in comparison to anything else in Sydney.
Fantastic experience: I love Barry’s Bootcamp! Especially the Surry Hills location. All of the instructors are kind and knowledgeable. The facilities are always clean. Couldn’t ask for anything more!
Fantastic experience: 5/5 stars for everything - front of house, the class instructor and services (hot showers, towels, GHD and Dyson.) Go to this gym for a serious work out!!
Fantastic experience: Came on a whim, via classpass to try it out. Nicole's class was awesome. Attentive and articulate. The onboarding process for beginners are simple and clear. ✌ Cleaned after every session, and equipments well maintained.
Negative experience: It seems like it could be a really fun class, it’s just disappointing there isn’t really much guidance for newbies. The tour was just being shown the lockers and how to use the treadmill based off their diagram at the front desk. The class instructions were also quite difficult to hear due to the music being so loud and the instructor needing to yell into the microphone. They could really improve their tours by explaining where the bathrooms are, giving a guide around the workout room and explaining how the format of the classes work. From what I could gather, there is only one workout room which they call the ‘red room’. They will let you know once the class is starting, in which you will be invited into the red room. You’re assigned a number and based on this you will either be on a bench or the treadmill. Don’t just go to a position that’s free. You won’t be able to ask the instructors for assistance either, as they are busy running the class. I hope this helps people going for the first time, as this would have been helpful information for me.
Fantastic experience: Amazing, simply amazing... Loved the vibe - Corey has such a great soundtrack to get your day started or evening going! Tequilas & tread? A winning combination - who would have thunk it (a brilliant cocktail mix , compliments to the chef). The staff at Barry’s Surry Hills are professional, kind and always greet you with a smile. Couldn’t recommend anymore if you’re looking for a ‘vibe’, to sweat in places you’ve never before and enter your #fitness era.
Fantastic experience: Un endroit convivial et un service de qualité! Je recommande
Fantastic experience: Intense but rewarding workouts with a combination of cardio and strength training. The instructors are great and the vibe is infectious! I was introduced to Barry's while living in Toronto 2 years ago and have never looked back since returning to Sydney. Highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: Been going to Barry's for over a year now and I can vouch for the program! You are guaranteed to get a good workout every single time and I physically feel that my cardio is getting better from tread. The instructors prepare different exercises and tracks every single time so there hasn't been repeat of anything so far. It can get a bit pricey if you go regularly so watch out for any sales! Surry Hills is a pretty quick walk from central and my go to Barry's + my personal fav shake is acai Barry :)
Fantastic experience: Nice place. Good workout. Always clean ☺️ & fresh.
Fantastic experience: Great studio- I have a weekly membership and have got so fit over the 5 months I’ve been going thanks to all the trainers. Definitely a challenge but great fun. If you like a group format, a challenge to improve and some direction this is for you.
Negative experience: My experience in Barrys has been great so far with most of the instructors - until I met this instructor this sunday. Very condescending attitude towards the runners who do not follow her speed exactly as it was instructed. And the class only felt like it was just for the few people who have worked out with her often & been in Barrys for a long time. So not new comers & beginners friendly at all. This made me and my friends very uncomfortable as we just started going to Barrys to get better at running, and made us feel like we are not respected and included in the class. And the staffs at receptions and fuel bar are very unfriendly, seemed very unhappy with their job.
Negative experience: LOVE the classes and trainers, the Barry’s experience is euphoric however their customer service is appalling. You never get a smile when greeted and emails go unanswered even after multiple follow ups. For the cost of a class/membership the front desk needs to be matching the quality experience that is offered by the instructors in the red room.
Positive experience: I’m more of a Pilates girl but this boot camp really kicked my a$$, loved the vibes
Fantastic experience: The best workout in the world. Literally have abs to prove it!! + The trainers are inspiring and amazing + Shakes are yummy + Facilities are top notch
Fantastic experience: Best workout and the trainers are really supportive…the counter staff aren’t that nice however
Negative experience: Like the classes, and trainers for the most part. However this studio never ever answer their phone, and if something happens they don’t care (eg crashed your car can’t make it, tough luck). This no exceptions policy makes it a really really expensive endeavour if you ever have anything go wrong.
Positive experience: Great workout but way too loud. Instructors are very supportive and have a great attitude. The facilities are very well designed and thought out. The problem is that it is extremely loud which makes it difficult to hear the instructions. My Apple Watch kept warning me about high volume above 100 decibels. I definitely recommend wearing hearing protection. They have earplugs freely available at the front desk but maybe just turn down the volume?? I enjoyed the workout a lot but I don’t think I’ll return. It’s not worth going deaf for it. 100 decibels is equivalent to being near a plane taking off. Even with earplugs my ears are ringing afterwards. Bummer really because other than that I really enjoyed it!
Fantastic experience: Barry’s is the best no matter where you go . Visited this studio when in town and was definitely not disappointed. Classes do get full very quickly so book in advance . I was there in the birthday week - they had unbelievable sale going on merchandise but most of the sizes were gone ( obviously) but still got hold One some stealers .
Fantastic experience: Fantastic instructor and front desk staff. Beautiful facilities - you get what you pay for. The room was really hot, but you’re also working hard too. The cold towel after wards was a lovely touch. It’s super motivating and goes really quickly. Smoothies are delish as well. The first timer induction is really helpful and definitely needed - otherwise it could be confusing for a beginner. They obviously recognise this and try to make things run as smoothly as possible. Really enjoyed it!
Fantastic experience: I am much fitter and happier since starting Barry's. It's not cheap, but the overall quality is very good, and the price and class-only structure helps me to stay motivated, more than a cheap gym. The demographic is mainly gays and blonde women.
Fantastic experience: Definitely recommend here if you enjoy a great challenge. They have all the amenities you need, and of super high quality at that (Oribe shampoo & body wash, towels, Dyson hair dryers). I recommend coming with a friend if going for the first time, as the vibe inside can be a bit intimidating at first!
Positive experience: It’s just alright. Rooms are super hot and hard to understand what they’re shouting into the mic. Fast beat. You really gotta know your posture and what you’re doing otherwise you’ll twist something and hurt yourself
Fantastic experience: Great workout and fantastic vibe!
Fantastic experience: Haven’t been here for half a year but a staff member recalled my name and the music was inspiring as usual.
Fantastic experience: ADDICTED!! Awesome workout, equipment, staff, and facilities.
Fantastic experience: One word: ADDICTIVE. I love Barry's its a full on workout with great trainers, lighting, music, showers and facilities - essentially a party for your workout!
Fantastic experience: Awesome experience
Fantastic experience: Regular gym goer here. I was looking to change up my routine during covid to try something new and I’m pleased to say - Barry’s is the definition of a gym! The workout is awesome - but not for the faint hearted. It demands a bit of dedication but, like anything, you will see results if committed. The focus is on a body weight and dumbbell focused HIIT routine (ever changing and evolving) coupled with a fartlek style run on a Woodway treadmill. The trainers will soon have you pushing your limits on what’s possible and I love the way the training mixes resistance with cardio and endurance. There’s a slight learning curve but once you’re tuned in to the trainer, there’s an undeniable magic in the class as everyone starts to exceed their envelope all to nightclub levels of sound and lighting. The best thing is the staff - super friendly and helpful front of house go hand in hand with professional, knowledgeable and very encouraging trainers. The facilities are amongst the cleanest and best maintained in Sydney. It feels premium but not intimidating. The showers (for men at least) are super clean and comfortable. Bookings and personalisation/ tracking progress could be easier however - there’s currently no support for the Barry’s app in Australia though I’m sure they’re working on it. This is a minor gripe though as reserving a spot is super easy online. Do yourself a favour and at least do a free trial. My money is on you getting hooked and heading back for more fun/pain in the “Red Room”.
Fantastic experience: Love my session! So much fun
Negative experience: I had wanted to try the studio for the first time and the reception refused to let me in since I did not come 15 min early for a useless tour of the studio. It was raining and I actually came right on time yet reception gave me attitude saying “you are late.” Then when I asked about the next class available, another girl chimes in to say it is full when the app clearly said the next class was free. I joined Classpass because I’m actually in the process of choosing a main studio subscription to goto so Barry’s it’s your loss you treat Classpass members so poorly.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place to train, super clean, staff are friendly and classes are fun!
Negative experience: Great facilities, poor customer service
Fantastic experience: Sarah trained me so hard that: my muscles are aching for more xxxx SPICY xxx
Fantastic experience: Intense amazing workout, heaps of fun, and a super luxury experience on top with chilled towels at the end and the best facilities I’ve seen in a gym to date. $36 a session but totally worth it for a change every now and then
Fantastic experience: Barry's is honestly my daily therapy so I'm making the time and space.
Fantastic experience: Love it! Great workouts and good music.
Fantastic experience: One of the best workouts I've tried ✔️ Confirmed, still my favourite workout ever
Fantastic experience: Love Barry’s intensity and the way you are pushed for a workout!!
Fantastic experience: Awesome classes with enthusiastic instructors and fellow class participants. The protein shakes are super tasty. The bathroom modern and the lockers plentiful. There are cheaper ways to stay fit but there are not many that are as effective and fun. I’m a fitness nut and I really enjoy treating myself to the odd Barry’s.
Fantastic experience: Great work out
Fantastic experience: Came here it was good but no toilets
Positive experience: Killer workout. Nice spacious gym.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic classes to get your body moving. The trainers are amazing and enthusiastic, the music is great and the equipment is new and clean. The showers are incredible and the cold towels after class are the perfect touch to what is already a fantastic, active experience. Must try the smoothie bar after class. Highly recommend.
Positive experience: I've feel it not like the classes I did in the usa Better than f45 but not as good as the classes I did in NYC
Fantastic experience: Barry good training! The team is amazing; from the second you walk in to the second you leave dripping in sweat this place is a phenomenal experience. Training reinvented. The trainers are personable and professional; love taking Nic Kelly’s classes - he makes them such fun “5 team 4 team 3 2 1.” You must try his class - must. I love Barrys! Worth every cent plus some.
Fantastic experience: THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. Best group fitness I've ever tried! I think I'm addicted to this place and it's so good for staying in shape and looking fabulous. Staff are all so friendly supportive and amazing, and despite the relatively high price for the classes.. I would say WORTH EVERY CENT.. give this place a try.. you might get hooked (like me). I've tried classes with all of the trainers.. and frankly, they are all super in their own way.
Fantastic experience: Great workout. Hit the Red Room
Fantastic experience: Pristine new studio! Loved the classes I took. Staff and instructors are crazy nice. Bathrooms - oribe and dyson? Enough said.
Fantastic experience: An awesome experience! The staff are very welcoming, the facilities are great and the workout is fun and challenging. I'll be back soon.
Positive experience: Could be better, some of the instructors need to go back to the training week, specifically Nic. He doesn’t understand how to use a mic or how to instruct. Facilities are good, albeit on the small side. Hopefully Martin place will have more room.
Positive experience: Challenging, well thought out workouts. Really clean, neat and new facilities. Cool staff. I trained at Barry’s for the first time today. I’m usually a CrossFit’er and tried Barry’s for something’s different. The workouts are a mix of interval running on treadmills and high rep floor work with dumbbells and body weight exercises. It’s a pretty cardio- centric. While the workouts can be adjusted for all fitness levels, if you are fit and looking to push yourself- you could really wreck yourself in these sessions. Facilities are great. Really clean, neat and new. I saw some posts talking about small change rooms - they aren’t massive but they are fine. You might have to work around someone to access your locker in a mint smelling change room with boutique hand soap on tap for 30 seconds during peak time between classes..... but you’ll probably survive. First world problems. A surprising number of staff for a small gym all busy around the place. My session was taken by Alicia - she was great. Overall a solid workout in a well appointed inner city location.
Fantastic experience: I have done a couple of Cory's classes. He commanded the room and I have left properly worked out at the end of each class! Great tunes, awesome lighting, and great equipment. Look forward to seeing Martin Place!
Fantastic experience: I've just moved over from London and was hoping to find a studio that I loved as much as those I used there, with fun but effective workouts and trainers that motivate but make you feel comfortable. Barry's Surry Hills is it! After my second session I'm hooked - the atmosphere is really friendly and not intimidating at all, the workouts push you hard but are fun and motivating. Also, great equipment and changing rooms - always a bonus! Can't wait for the next session.
Fantastic experience: I've tried many workouts and this is honestly the best - a truly luxurious workout experience from the moment you step through the door. You can even pre-order your post workout smoothie so that it's waiting for you when you finish!
Fantastic experience: What can I say - Barry’s isn’t cheap but in life u get what u pay for. Workouts are thorough and super challenging, reception and ‘secondary’ aspects eg smoothies and layout are smart and make u feel good. Haven’t trained with everyone yet but Dylan is fantastic - real pro taking his beachside experience and strong banter into his classes. He’s also a real snack - BONUS lol. Get into Barry’s asap
Fantastic experience: Excellent workouts and finally we have a real smoothie situation in Sydney. About time! Re instructors, Nic Kelly is killing it... get around it!
Fantastic experience: I had the best workout at Barrys recently. The class is just under an hour but it flew by. So much energy from the trainers, the music was great and I loved the red room. Great timings for people who need to go before or after work, or even lunch times. Be prepared to ache the next day though. I have recommended them to anyone who will listen.
Fantastic experience: Really great workouts and instructors! Unique atmosphere (I love the red room), amazing facilities and very nice products. I did two sessions with Blake and one with Dylan. They were both amazing. I can't wait to try the other trainers!
Fantastic experience: Great workout, great music, great trainers, free towels. What else could you ask for?
Fantastic experience: Such a good workout!! Love how Barry’s is now in Sydney
Positive experience: As a gym-goer, runner and F45er, I decided to try Barry’s after walking past it in Surry Hills. I was actually first attracted to the space itself, as it looks pretty cool from the outside. I have since then been to three classes and they have been great. Had three different trainers, which were all good. If you want to do some cardio and a bit of weights for toning - then it’s a great workout. I think it’s more intense than F45 in terms of cardio, but also more controlled and organised. The biggest advantage is that you know what body part is being worked on that day - where as F45 doesn’t really consider the previous days work out, in my opinion anyway. I can also throw this into my weekly workout routine easily. They claim to burn 1000 calories a class, but I’m only hitting about 700. Facilities are of a high quality: treadmills and bathrooms especially. Only criticism is that it is a bit small - reception area, locker area and men’s change room lockers. But showers are good and clean, which is good because I go before work. $35/class is a bit pricy, but worth it if you make most of the facilities. I would suggest that they do a monthly membership model at a better rate. Smoothies a bit pricy, but not really my thing anyway. But it’s a cool space and nice to see a fitness offering that spent some money on a cool venue. Will add to my weekly routine once a week, maybe twice if they change the pricing model.
Negative experience: Mixed bag, nothing compared to the states or London studios. Have done 4 classes since it opened less than 2 weeks ago. Locker rooms: Painfully small, you’ll be bumping into each other as you get changed. Seriously, I’ve been elbowed in the face and I elbowed someone else. Instructors: Mixed bag again. Some instructors REALLY need to understand volume levels, there’s no point having your mic so low and the music blasting that nobody can understand you. Nic K needs to learn how to speak through a mic, nobody could understand ANYTHING he was saying. Then he randomly sings along to songs (badly), but this confuses everyone more as it’s impossible to hear the instructions to begin with... was a dazed look from everyone on the treadmills. Workout: Running portion is significantly easier than classes I’ve done overseas. Floor work is good and somewhat challenging. Price: Smoothie bar is way overpriced compared to everything in the area. Workouts are overpriced by $5-10, that sounds stupid to type. Reception: friendly as always.
