Negative experience: Fantastic facilities, however, is there any reason the volume of the music in the main gym area has to be blasting like a nightclub? Sunday night, minimal people yet had to deal with 95+ decibels of ear piercing sound. Having music is fine, but when your headphones can't even block out the background music that's a problem.

Fantastic experience: The gym is spacious and clean. The sauna is so good after a workout. The trainers are professional and extremely motivating in the reformer Pilates classes!

Positive experience: I've been going to Genesis for years and there are some good and bad aspects: The good - they have constantly added new equipment and expanded the gym over the years. - There's usually doubles of every machine - a massive astro turf space The bad - byo toilet paper as there's at least couple of days a month there's none to be found. - byo carabiner if you want to use the cable machines. On any given day there will be up to 2/3rds of the cable machines missing carabiners

Negative experience: Massive company, but can't restart my 5 day trial because I got super sick after I enquired! They just expect me, as a little individual to suck it up. They’re totally inflexible and don’t seem to care for new clients. They’re Clearly making enough money. So I won’t be going. Do not recommend.

Negative experience: Disappointing Experience – Not Worth the Money Had I known what my experience would be like, I never would have paid for a year-long membership at Genesis Cooks Hill. Several issues made my time there far from satisfactory: • Poor Induction: The induction process was more of a casual chat than a professional orientation. Key details, like cancellation options and legal obligations, were glossed over or not mentioned at all. • No Cooling-Off Period: Despite what was implied, there was no clear cooling-off period that allowed me to cancel without penalty. • Lack of Cleanliness: The gym was not maintained to a high standard. The sauna, bathrooms, and equipment often appeared unclean, which is especially concerning in a facility used by so many people daily. • Lack of Communication: There was no direct communication regarding significant gym modifications, which impacted my experience, especially as someone with asthma. I wasn’t informed that I needed to follow their social media to stay updated on such important changes. • Deceiving Information: The information provided about the sauna’s opening hours and contract clauses was misleading. It was frustrating to find that the sauna was closed earlier than posted staff hours without any notice. • Outdated and Unsafe Equipment: Despite claims of new equipment, much of it was outdated, low in stock, and even dangerous when not maintained properly. Additionally, I have personal reasons that prevent me from continuing to exercise, which I explained to management. They initially promised I wouldn’t be charged, but I ended up being charged over $200 for undisclosed items. When I requested a refund, I was denied on the grounds that my reasons were insufficient for the General Manager. As if that wasn’t enough, I received an email offering a phone call for more feedback, which felt like a last-ditch effort to appease me rather than address the real issues. As someone with years of experience managing venues and understanding customer value, this was incredibly disappointing. To make matters worse, my girlfriend signed a three-month contract, and even after it ended, she was still bound to pay for additional days without her knowledge. This kind of practice is very disappointing, especially considering the fair trade standards in Australia. Overall, my experience with Genesis Cooks Hill has been frustrating and disappointing. I would strongly advise others to consider these points before signing up.

Negative experience: I moved out of the area and despite being out of contract they insisted on taking payment for another 30 days after my cancellation. So then I thought I'll exercise my contracted right to suspend my account, however I was then told that that would just push out the 30 days and I would still have to them in full. A blatant cash grab. The gym was well equipped, saving them from one star.

Negative experience: Don’t sign up, they will non stop call you for weeks straight and once you block their number they will continue to phone you, after i called them and told them to stop they continued calling, 0 stars

Fantastic experience: I am a happy member at Genesis Cooks Hill. I wanted to give Ruby Butcher a glowing review. Ruby signed me up at Genesis in June 2023, she was welcoming and helpful and continues to this day to be the warm, beautiful person that she is!! She is an amazing personal trainer and instructor. I take part in Ruby's Reformer Pilates classes, and a few weeks ago, I'd had a pretty rough day, but walking in to Ruby's class that afternoon, I just felt the stress of the day wash off me, she really helped me without even knowing she did. Thank you Ruby, you are amazing and I am happy to know you!!

Negative experience: Sauna was pretty gross, think it had been on fire before and lots of mould inside.

Fantastic experience: Kind caring understanding and willingness to help me reach my goals and lose weight well worth the 5 stars

Positive experience: I love Genesis. Only feedback is there is only one basketball court, but 4x soccer courts, often the basketball court is converted to soccer and occupied when 3 other soccer courts are available. It would be better for business to be able to sell the basketball court and a soccer court up stairs.

Positive experience: Great classes and a nice crowd in the cafe!

Fantastic experience: Been at genesis for a year, me and my friends all like it, as we primarily focus on weight training having 4 squat/deadlift racks is amazing. Also it was nice to see a bunch of new equipment and knowing that our money is actually invested back into the gym. Sauna does occasionally go out of service but when it works good God it makes all the pain go away.

The lady on the front desk (Ruby) who informed me of membership options was so welcoming and made me feel at ease. She was very kind and patient with all the questions I had to ask. Thank you!!

Negative experience: Terrible customer service from the sales staff...My wife and myself have recently moved to Newcastle from Melbourne and are in the process of looking for a new gym. My wife has done the 5-day free trial but had difficulty signing up for this as she has a Victorian license. Despite this she was allowed to do the trial and confirmed at the time that I could also do the trial despite having an out of state license. I had attempted the trial, first on a Saturday and was told that I would need to come in during the week when sales staff were available, but that I would have to pay a casual visit fee if I wanted to train that day. I then came back early in the morning yesterday and was told that no sales staff were available, but I would still be eligible for the free trial if I signed up online. Today I signed up online and came in in the morning but no sales staff were yet available, so I paid a second casual visit. Today I have been informed by Ruby that I am not eligible for the trial as I had paid a casual visit and I have an out of state licence. This is despite the fact that my wife who also has an out of state licence was given the free trial and two different Genesis staff members have informed me that paying a casual visit would not make me ineligible be for the trial. Both myself and my wife feel we have been treated with a lack of consistency, professionalism and customer service by the sales staff because we had out of state licenses, despite both of us offering documentation to substantiate the fact that we have recently moved to Newcastle.

Negative experience: The gym itself is great - the one star is for the way the sign up process is handled. Signed up for the free trial not realising your licence had to contain a Newcastle address, and I only just moved so did not have a licence with an address in the area. I was told I could sign up for month with 10 days free, so opted to do that. I was not told the fob would cost $40 when signing up (non refundable) but paid it. When I got an email letting me know when money would be taken from my account for the membership, I got a surprise when a $55 administrative fee would also be taken out (not informed about this either) for signing up. When my partner and I informed reception about this, my partner got a call back and the girl who handled our sign up denied everything and took no responsibility for not informing us of the charges. I have signed up to multiple gyms in the past and have never experienced such unprofessionalism and deception. Beware of these extra costs when signing up here.

Positive experience: Lots to do and heaps of wide open space

Fantastic experience: 100% worth it. You get a few days free to check the place out before you decide whether you want to commit to a membership or not. I was very surprised at how big the gym was. The trainers are exceptionally good people who know how to cater to each individual. You will hit all your workout goals at genesis and have fun doing it. I would highly recommend joining. I might even see you there. I've joined 4 or 5 gyms around the Newcastle area and I think I will call genesis my local most likely as long as I still train. Try it out, you E got nothing to lose except weight and everything to gain, including weight ( of that's what you want). ☺️

Negative experience: Staff harass you for months and months when you show a slight interest. Gym is quite run down with no atmosphere. Feels like you’re in a warehouse - some machines didn’t even work.

Negative experience: Tried to attend a free trial. Was told after waiting 20 mins, that because we were getting a fitness passport we couldn’t do a trial - as Genesis wouldn’t be directly receiving money from the fitness passport. Was offered $40 for two sessions instead.

Positive experience: Great price. Great location. Some of the worst equipment you'll find in a modern gym. Edit. Equipment has been updated. Still not great but better than before.

Negative experience: Free trial is false advertising, don’t bother coming here - anytime isn’t that far. They bait you in with a free trail online, but then when you arrive, you have to be “assessed by a consultant” for eligibility. There is nothing in their T’s and C’s about this. Waste of time.

Negative experience: TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT! Mislead me into signing up to a membership with false conditions discussed over the phone. Despite trying to contact them to sort it out months prior they failed to reply timely and instead charged me for overdue payments. Finally, once I was able to contact them to deal with the account and cancel it, I am still forced to pay the 30 day cancellation fee. This is not a gym worth supporting you all can do better than this…

Negative experience: money grubbing management, dirty and run down

Fantastic experience: I've being going to Genesis Cooks Hill for a few years now and am so happy. I've tried every class and love them all. I'm grateful for the early morning classes to get my day started right. I always look forward to the crazy fun step classes to boost my mood. The instructors are great, friendly and committed to each session. The cafe is an added bonus to to post workout hydration! Can't wait to get back to my routine after lockdown.

Negative experience: Cancelled my membership on the phone and realised a month later they were still charging me. Asking about it, there is no record of my cancellation, now they cannot tell me if I'll even get the money back and don't reply to emails. Pretty average experience.

Fantastic experience: I joined Coaching Zone, Cooks Hill 7 months ago. I although I have always played sport and walked, had never been to a gym. I was hesitant and to be honest terrified to be starting this at 60. The staff are friendly and very supportive and members are a great support group. Coaching Zone is great as you have coaches to guide you with technique and you can work at your own level and pace. I built up my sessions, starting at 1 or 2 sessions a week up to my current 4 to 6. A major highlight for me is when the younger members tell me I am an inspiration (and planking 4 minutes last week). I would absolutely recommend Genesis.

Fantastic experience: Great gym, both with their group classes and gym spaces. Have felt very supported by the gym team, always feel great once I've done a session at this gym.

Fantastic experience: So I had never really been to a gym before and to be honest I felt a bit nervous about the whole thing. But I love this place, I feel comfortable, safe and supported. From the people at the desk who always say hello and make you feel welcome to the utterly awesome trainers. I completely recommend Genesis to anyone feeling a bit iffy about exercising and training. Oh i have done some classes as well and they are fabulous too! Yay!

Positive experience: Great range of classes, from spin, barre, 45, yoga. Staff on the front desk are really friendly and the instructors are too.

Positive experience: Love the overall size of the gym and although it is an old buiding and does get quite hot and humid during the summer months it does have its good pionts. Staff are great and helpful, doing what they can to help you achieve your goals. One thing, the actual coaching zone space is a bit cramped at times, it would be great to have a larger space to thn have more equipment set up and to also have more 4kg and 5kg dumbell weights. due to having a larger number of women in the class these weights are in high demand at times.

Positive experience: Pretty dated gym. Def needs a facelift and some new equipment. Price is a bit rich for what's on offer. Friendly staff though.

Their classes are so well planned, challenging and fun! They say the gym is like a room in your house. Genesis Cooks hill is my home and I would recommend it to anyone looking for their fitness happy place.

Fantastic experience: The coaching staff at Cooks Hill Genesis are fabulous. They provide the right balance of motivation, consideration and expertise. I really enjoy the Coaching Zone small group fitness sessions. Familiar friendly support from staff and participants makes staying fit more fun and achievable.

Negative experience: My Wife tried to put her month to month membership on hold and even cancel it, through this covid times, but they continue to charge us, we wrote emails and tryed to sort it out over the phone with no luck, be careful with them as you think a month to month membership would be easy to cancel but they will still try to drain every penny out of a family through these times! Positive experience: A gym where you feel welcome and safe especially at this time .Plenty of room and areas to train safely . I particularly like the variety of group sessions available (bookings essential at the moment) - the instructors vary the classes each week to challenge us, and give "user friendly" options as needed. Negative experience: Couldn't even get into the place to give it a proper review. Lift wouldn't work and no other means to get up there. Uncomfortable walking through a strange building not know where to go after hours. There was a creepy stairwell I found which I wasn't going to venture up. Pretty disappointed

Fantastic experience: I have been a member of the Cooks Hill Genesis Gym for several years. Being an 'older' member I have always felt very comfortable going to any of the classes as the instructors have always been helpful, considerate and have never made one feel that you shouldnt be there because of your age. They are very encouraging especially for the Be Active classes. I also have Parkinson's and again I have had nothing but support and encouragement from the staff which is very important as exercise is very helpful with this disease.

Fantastic experience: I am new to Newcastle and have been to the gym just three times so far but am very impressed as have been a regular gym goer for 30+ years in WA and overseas and have not been a member of a gym with such a great range of classes and equipment before. I have also found the staff extremely helpful and welcoming - well done Genesis!

Fantastic experience: I've been going to this sports / fitness centre for many decades. I enjoy its relaxed atmosphere and the many options available for customers. It's easygoing and offers plenty of different types of exercise and activities.

Fantastic experience: I've been a member via the Fitness Passport program for a number of years now and a couple of years ago I did the 12 week challenge with coaching zone sessions. It set me back on the right path in terms of regular all round exercise and I'm now addicted to the 45 sessions. I love the atmosphere and friendly staff, it's always easy.

Negative experience: Very poor value for money. Non-transparent pricing structure... complete rip off. $100 signup fee and $150 cancellation fee (all hidden in terms and conditions).

Fantastic experience: Oh Alicia, Bec and Raquel, you changed my life! I moved to Newcastle after a break up for a year and your barre classes gave me a stable routine, something to wake up for, and killer pins. I am moving back to Sydney now, and will be forever grateful for your enthusiasm, variety, and sadistic approach to pliés.

Even if you haven't been for a couple of weeks they still remember who you are. The Group Fitness instructors are fantastic. Barre and Pump are up there as my favourite classes.

Fantastic experience: I used Genesis for 4 years while working in Newcastle. Best gym I have ever used, mainly because of the huge gym floor space. There was never a machine unavailable or space I couldn’t use for my workout. Also plenty of equipment and plenty of different types. Facilities are top notch, staff are great and good kids area.

Fantastic experience: Amazing staff, great facility. Large range of free weights and machines, also very large CrossFit area and 4 squat racks Aswell as 3 smith machines. Never have an issue with not being able to access the equipment I want. 2 large cardio areas Aswell :)

Fantastic experience: I have been a member for just 2 weeks and am loving getting back into the gym. It’s a great atmosphere, nice friendly staff and members, loads of equipment and plenty of space for everyone. It’s clean and well maintained. I’ve taken a couple of classes so far and they’re great. There’s plenty to choose from!! PT trainer Janessa is awesome, super friendly and encouraging, can’t wait for our next session!! Genesis at Cooks Hill is in a nut shell, awesome!!

Fantastic experience: I have been a member at Genesis Cooks Hill for almost 2 years The facilities are great ,the Staff are very friendly and the Trainers are very professional They Got me fit for medical treatments , I took off 20 kilos and got stronger in a very supportive environment the procedures are over, the weight has stayed off and I enjoy training there

Fantastic experience: This gym really does have something for everyone. With such an amazing range of classes, activities and equipment there really is no excuse not to get there and get fit. My favourite feature is the childminding service - I wouldn't be able to get to the gym without it. Such a great set up for the kids and the staff are fabulous!

Positive experience: Great place for the kids on the Ninja park, however the gym itself is quite outdated and the parking is not great. Make sure to leave their underground parking before they close, otherwise you will get locked out!

Negative experience: TERRIBLE Gym that evidently care a lot more about money than their customers. They are all about sales and go to great lengths in order get or gain more clients - irregardless of how annoying, inconvenient or insensitive it is.

Fantastic experience: Genesis Fitness Cooks Hill is such an amazing place. I don't think I've ever set foot in a gym that's as big as this, & is so well equipted. You certainly get great value for money here, with the excellent facilities, 24/7 access, & great features like a sauna, free towel use, hair dryers, straighteners & shower soap provided. There's an upper level with cardio machines, where you can watch group classes below, there's a huge choice of machines to work out on, & there's a massive open gym area where you can do your own thing, with weights & rowing machines around the edge. The group fitness room is mirrored, with ballet rails & resistance bands, & let's not forget there is also a sports court here with upper level viewing, a Physiotherapist, & The popular Ninja Park. It's such a friendly, relaxed atmosphere here, with lovely staff, & a cafe & recreational area with seating. When you join Genesis, you get a complimentary sweat towel, water bottle & gym bag...BONUS!! Exercising shouldn't be a chore, & now I've signed up, I really look forward to going.....& for that magical sauna post workout of course! Just try & keep me away!

The classes are fantastic and the team in Coaching Zone are just the best! CZ and Genesis has helped me transform my life into the healthy active lifestyle I've always tried to achieve and now I'm hooked and eont ve stopping anytime soon! I had not been to a gym for over 10 years and was very reluctant to join, however, I was blown away by the facilities and the positive vibe from the staff which resulted in me deciding to sign up. So far I have enjoyed each of my visits and am always looking forward to going back. I am also looking forward to the classes that are included in my membership.

On the downside the mobile phone activity in the gym is something that should be discouraged i.e. leave your phones at the desk as at times it interferes with other members wanting to use equipment . . Fantastic experience: Love the large open functional area, which is the best I’ve seen around! Plenty of decent cardio machines to warm up on. Weights area also has everything I need and is never over crowded (I train at midday sessions). Lots of options to get involved in from classes to personal training to healthy food after training. Staff have always been helpful. Well done Genesis, I’m a fan!
