Negative experience: Can get very busy. Had one entitled PT who was working out individually essentially shove me off the cables then tell me he was on the phone when I tried to talk to him which was a first!
Negative experience: Every time some of the machines are broken out of order. No hand sanitizer filled up. Great spot and space but could be so much better with simple improvements.

Negative experience: I got a platinum membership with the objective to get access 24/7 to any gym of fitness first i told to the guy who assisted me in Newtown gym that the main reason i joined is have a gym 24/7 in different places and he said 100% confident that yeah yeah you can get 24/7 access in any of fitness first gym, when i signed i got rockdale no 24/7, bondy no 24/7, Maroubra no 24/7, maybe more i got stuck in a membership for 1 year with lies. be careful!!!

Negative experience: I was misinformed in a consultation regarding potentially joining this gym. Under their cooling off period, after numerous phonecall and emails, I was promised a refund by Ash, the manager, as I had never once set foot inside of their gym and didn’t intend for my card to be charged as I pulled out of joining on hearing the actual fee. Weeks and weeks have passed and still no refund. Not to mention, they’re ignoring my emails. Be very careful dealing with this gym. I’d recommend joining Snap Fitness in Newtown instead.

Negative experience: This place is not worth paying $1 for. Filthy, not renovated for years, machines are broken, and no one uses a towel. Stay away! Fitness first gyms are horrible but this takes the cake. The floor caves in in some spots so you need to find an even spot to work out on

Fantastic experience: Good facilities. But more importantly staff is very helpful. In the past I've had massive issues trying to end contracts, with staff trying to hustle you back in, creating artificial barriers to ending a contract etc. Recently I had to end my contract due to moving and Syed was very helpful in getting that done smoothly. Can definitely recommend this gym.

Negative experience: This gum really does suck. The lockers are always broken, the equipment is falling apart, there is always a smell in the gym/sauna and I had a really bad experience with an abusive person at the gym which wasn’t addressed by staff nor management after a serious complaint was lodged. Need to cancel my membership. *edited for additional response* you can’t find me on your system? Shows how terrible your systems are! I’ve been a member for years, and I’m so disappointed at how bad your Newtown gym is and the terrible systems and corporate management of that site. I’ve filed several written complaints about the state of that gym in person at the counter and NONE have been addressed. Why should I think you are any better through social media? You are a shocking company and provide a terrible service. AVOID.

Negative experience: The sauna freaking reeeeeeks like sweaty men. All the time. It needs to be cleaned. Sad because fitness first used to be a respectful gym. There is tape keeping the floors together in the stretching area and some machines parts are falling off. I can deal with that. It’s the stench that comes from the sauna, beyond gross. No words can explain the waft you get when you open the door.

Negative experience: The classes and instructors are great. The sauna is disgusting, small, smells terrible, not cleaned often enough. I can see past reviews complaining about the sauna and the smell but the staff don’t care and it won’t be fixed.

Negative experience: I actually had a decent experience here until now. I had to have emergency surgery on my stomach. I was in the hospital for two weeks and now am unable to lift anything for at least 6 weeks. I contacted the gym thinking they may offer some sort of sympathy towards their member. Not even a “sorry to hear this” “we hope you heal fast” nothing of this was said in fact when I said I can’t work or play for at least 6 weeks (which means no income coming in) they said we need some sort of proof that you were in the hospital. I then sent them my discharge papers which say exactly what happened and for how long I can’t lift etc. They responded back they need a medical certificate (as if that wasn’t enough proof). I called the hospital wasting more of the nurse and doctor’s time to get them to write a note. I then send that they once again say that, that is not enough and I need to pay the cancellation fee. AS IF, they need this fee when they are making MILLIONS from others. Shows they truly care about their money over their members. I will no longer ever associate with this company and I’ll be damn sure to let anyone else who asks me know as well.

Negative experience: I used to go to the one in Potts Point but have moved and now this one is the closest to me. However the gym is super dirty and the machines need proper cleaning. Some are also very old, but just the cleaning is very much needed to start with. I dont have pictures yet but I might take some tomorrow and upload them. Please clean it!!

Negative experience: I signed a new contract to reduce the cost of my membership. Found out months afterwards they simply never bothered to process my new contract and that I had been paying way more than what I had signed for. Was not offered any solution when I went in person to discuss it beyond that they 'didn't do paper contracts'. When I asked if they had the physical contract THEY had asked ME to come in and sign i was told they 'don't have it.' What. Unprofessional and a downright scam. Absolutely appalled at their conduct.

Negative experience: Recently I joined Fitness First Australia and cancelled membership in the cooling off period. Turns out they didn’t cancel it and kept charging for another month. They now owe me $200 and I’ve have been waiting 2 months for the cancellation to process and still haven’t received any money. However they have stopped charging anything extra. They have said they have no way to escalate. The reception has not wanted to put me through to management or to a memberships consultant and when he has after pressure, said he is putting me on hold and hung up. Not only is the equipment really bad and old at fitness first in general it seems like they are still doing the same dodgy stuff as 10 years ago. Fitness First Australia

Negative experience: There is a cockroach infestation in the sauna and it has the worst stench plus a growing puddle of brown water (like it hasn’t been cleaned in months). I had been noticing it for a few weeks before I said something and the guy at the front desk dismissed me, said numerous people had told him about the cockroaches, and what? … the traps are $3 on Amazon … it’s so disgusting. Please address this.

Positive experience: Not as bad as some of the reviews here would have you believe … but not much better either! Good: Great service and friendly staff (props to Joel at the front desk especially), solid range of equipment and more than enough space. Super convenient location. Bad: Most of the equipment there is visibly worn, with a lot patched up temporarily with duct tape. Many weights and barbells are visibly rusty. Lockers need some TLC. Ugly: Every sanitiser pump was empty, as were dispensers for disposable wipes. Signs implore you wipe down equipment after use … which isn’t exactly possible. Honestly feels like an OH&S violation. I understand equipment takes time to update and so do renovations, but basic hygiene should be a standard daily baseline.

Positive experience: Amazing timetable of classes, so much variety and the instructors are all incredible. Great location right next to public transport. -1 star as the actual club is falling apart with equipment that needs an upgrade, leaky roof and quite a bit of mould. Please invest some of the membership money into the repair this lovely club deserves.

Negative experience: Fairly alright gym if you want to be brought into a s*** contract and constantly threatened with debt collectors. When signing up we were told we could cancel anytime as we weren’t planning on staying the full term of the contract (no mention of the illusive 1-month contract). Wasn’t even in the country anymore, which they knew, and they still tried to chase me on payments. Tried to resolve the issue multiple times and been met with awful customer service and/or silence on the issue. Stay clear.

Negative experience: Been here for a while and it’s time to move elsewhere. There are countless leaky areas during raining weather, including directly about one of the only squat racks upstairs. The people who use the gym suck, they do not unpack their weights and the staff to do not enforce otherwise. You do not get the sense that FF care at all just how bad this gym is. Save your money. Go elsewhere.

Positive experience: Fitness First Newtown is a fairly basic version of the Fitness First gym offerings within the city The gym is well equipped however often equipment unfortunately is broken and repairs can take 4-6 weeks and sometimes longer - there used to be a fan in the free weights area upstairs and this broke and still hasn’t been replaced, approx 12 months The gym does have 24/7 access available - just need to speak with the front desk to have you card updated for access. Unfortunately the air con isn’t turned on until 6am so it can be very hot and humid if you train earlier The staffed hours are also quite restricted over the weekend and though understandable for safety, the sauna and steam room are unavailable without staff present - so post midday on a Saturday they’re closed..! In summary, the gym does represent good value however it’s getting a little tired and needs some TLC when compared with newer gyms by Fitness First that you can access for the same cost Staff are friendly

Negative experience: Like all the other very bad reviews, I have a similar experience. Absolutely the worst gym in Sydney atm due to a few reasons. 1) The equipment is a total joke. Broken, rusted and dangerous...Indeed management are laughing! Lockers are broken, non-working, some WITHOUT doors. 2) No sense of community as they have very few members. All of whom seem sad, of low socio-economic standing and pretty dodgy to be around. 3) Staff are incredibly rude and sullen. They have a chalk dispenser at the free weights area and as it was empty I asked the blonde lady (zero smile lady) if there was more. She looked at me as if I was something that had just crawled out of cheese, said "No" turned her back and walked away. The young muscled angry guy at the front desk seems to be 'roid aggro and flew into a rage when I said I wanted to cancel. Bro...ffs..calm down buddy! Ash, the "Manager" has about less sense of complaint handling as her has about his rude and aggro staff... If you are looking to join a gym in 2024...this is one to TOTALLY AVOID!!! Also, the black mould and general filth is probably a real health hazard and I would not step foot in that place...even if I was seeking shelter from a Nuclear bomb attack...
Negative experience: there is a lot of broken equipment and lack of maintenance, the weights and plates are all disorganized, at this exact moment there are 2 leg extension machines and they are broken and lack oil, I do not recommend fitness first Newton
Positive experience: Not too bad, but to be completely honest. Other fitnesses have better deals, for example when you want to pause your membership when you go on a holiday, Fitness first still charges you. And fitness Newtown doesn’t have the best equipments compared to the others as well, they don’t have different ones and very often the ones in Newtown are damaged or out of order. I have tried different gyms like anytime fitness and snap fitness but fitness first in Newtown scores the lowest for me, I only joined because i love going to the sauna and steam bath and they have in Newtown, but the smell there is unbearable so i am not able to go anyway. I know that many of us have emailed them to do a better job in cleaning but it doesn’t seem to get better. I just don’t like the idea to sit in a steam bath and breath in the air of smelly feet.
Negative experience: Ladies beware, harassed and followed around the gym by a male gym member who took photos of me. When I brought this to the clubs attention they did nothing and only offered to freeze my membership until I felt ‘safe’ despite their policy on harassment which is as follows: “Any Club user who acts in an intimidating, abusive, violent, or disrespectful manner may be ejected from the Club, and Members may have their Membership terminated with no refund of fees already paid.” This was all document on CTV abut they actually did not care. Would recommend newton gym as a safe and inclusive environment.
Negative experience: Fitness first debited an amount from my bank account after it was already confirmed that my membership was terminated. This happened not only once but a second time even after I notified them of the issue. This occurred in June 2023 and I notified fitness first immediately. Since June, I have emailed multiple times asking for a refund update and weeks go by before I receive a response. It appears that the tactic is to delay responding to my messages in the hope I forget about the direct debits and they won’t be refunded.
Negative experience: Tried to talk to the manager Ashish Mishra, I called the gym 5 times in different days and always someone said he would called me in 5 minutes. When I called last time I was told he wasn’t in the club and he has something more important than talk to a customer. My issue wasn’t solved.
Negative experience: Staffed hours are garbage. Thursday and friday you close too early for 9-5 people to work out and use sauna after work. Saturday sunday you close facilities at midday. That's four days a week that an evening person can't use key facilities they're paying for.
Fantastic experience: It’s very accessible and they got all the machinery working
Negative experience: This gym is pathetic. Ever since I have been at this gym (1 year) the lockers have only worked maybe 10% of the time. I risk my things being stollen every time I go. When I cancelled my membership the staff asked for feedback. I told them about my issues with the lockers. The staff became defensive and told me that issue had been fixed months ago. This is not true. I am at the gym now and once again my gear is behind an unlocked door.
Negative experience: Simply put: this gym is uninspiring. No atmosphere. I loved doing the HIIT class until I found out you have to pay extra every session for it. Why? The membership is also crazy expensive. I thought fitness first was top of the line for gyms. TBH this place needs a full renovation and new management. It has potential with its prime location!!!

Fantastic experience: This is such a nice gym and everyone is always very friendly. I especially like the group classes. They used to have extended staffed hours that have recently been reduced which means you need to take the emergency exit for 24 hour access (bit of a struggle after leg day) but overall very nice.
Negative experience: Been a member for a few years. It’s awful. Only giving 2 stars due to the friendly people and regulars who use this gym. It has no air conditioning and the old air con unit drips water from the ceiling all over the floor. It’s seriously got to be breaching health and safety regulations…it’s the peak of summer and people are in the gym absolutely melting with no air con. They put random fans throughout the gym which do nothing. Equipment is also old and there’s always at least one machine not working each week. Foam rollers are disgusting. Most of the lockers in the men’s locker room are broken. Don’t understand why they can’t do a reno. It’s close and convenient to home otherwise I’d be going elsewhere. I’ve used many FF throughout Australia and this is by far the worst.
Positive experience: I've chosen this gym as its location is very comfortable right next to the train station so I can go train right after coming back from work. The venue is large and I can do my complete workout without problems, but more than half of the lockers in the male changing room are out of service and the calisthenics parallettes are ridiculously constantly missing. One star to the customer service which is a joke. They're all very nice when you sign up, and then they don't care anymore about you afterwards.

Negative experience: I’ve been a member of this gym for many years but it seems it’s definitely time to move. Where to start: the men’s lockers have been in disrepair for months meaning unless you are early you won’t get one; the aircon currently doesn’t work (or is being left off); the water fountain is no longer cooled; a lot of equipment is broken; the steam room has been out of order for months. To add insult to injury the prices have just been increased! If you are looking for a gym in Newtown, look elsewhere.

Negative experience: Absolutely unprofessional. Il give the gym a thumbs up for having nice staff and weights u can lift. However the staff is incompetent and unreliable. When first signing in they wanted me to sign a blank contract before writing on it themselves, after writing something not correspondent to my original deal with one of the staff, i signed the contract before seing the mistake and stopped at the date. Day after i come back and they have filled in more on the contract, and then signing the date for me in front of my eyes. This makes the contract as a whole not legally binding, and not valid. I have let this slide, and come to peace with the staff not being lawyers. However, after this they have overcharged me, lied about the overcharge, doubled down on the lies. Then over charged me again, after this promising a refund, and then overcharged me again. I have had to go though my bank to get my stolen money back. Also half of the lockers don't work. and it has been like this for years, apparently. There are other gyms in Newtown, go there
Negative experience: Genuine comments: Rubbish gym. Steam room not accessible for half year. Dirty floors. Old school big fans blowing in your face. Literally half of the lockers are broken. Staff hours are short, expect to enter the gym through the dodgy back door.

It’s so so poorly maintained, I’ve reported numerous times the broken lockers and failing equipment and nothing happens, it just keeps getting worse. Managers have never responded to complaints or requests for help with billing enquiries / account holds. The worst gym.

I agree with the negative reviews about poor upkeep of the change rooms and gym equipment, and can confirm that nothing has changed over the last months. What hasn't been previously mentioned I don't think is that staffed hours on the weekends have been reduced to a paltry 8am-midday. Reception on the weekends is also frequently unattended, with staff seeming to prefer sitting in the back room under the stairs.
Negative experience: wouldn't even go here. the receptionists don't even answer calls. I'm going to plus fitness and I'm pretty sure the receptionist at this place works for the plus fitness too.
Positive experience: I go to the gym almost every morning before work and really like the classes I take. I could never work out on my own (too lazy) but with the group classes I find the motivation I need. Only improvement I’d suggest (at least in Newtown) almost all lockers are broken. Fixing the lockers’ locks would really improve the experience.
Negative experience: Perhaps the worst maintained FF gym in the entirety of Sydney. Disgusting actually. Just a sample of lockers, toilets out of order. Plus their claim that the gym is 24hrs is a total sham. Friday afternoon at 5pm & saunas are locked because no staff rostered & gym users are expected to enter & exit the gym via filthy fire stairs. And they actively advise against using lockers when reception is unstaffed (which is most of the time) so good luck with your wallet, keys & any valuables! Save your money & go elsewhere. Almost any gym in Newtown is better than this dump.
Positive experience: Wish Google allowed for more details with hours. This gym is only open 24 hours to platinum members. Regular members can enter during staffed hours: Mon-Wed: 6:00am-8:00pm Thu: 6:00am-7:00pm Fri: 6:00am-4:00pm Sat & Sun: 8:00am-12:00pm
Negative experience: The facilities are decent but the staff are conning you from the very beginning. If you are new to working out or thought fitness first was affordable, think again. They scammed me. The man quoted a price for a month's length not knowing he would renew my subscription without my consent. He had called me to see about an extension and I had told him to call me back later on in the month. I did not answer the call so he automatically renewed my subscription. I then answer a call a month later to hear my about my debts and suddenly there the victims. All in all, would not recommend the gym unless you are dedicated to working out. Staff minipulated me with their fake smiles and secret agenda.
Negative experience: A crowded gym that neglects to maintain lockers and equipment
Negative experience: It was supposed to be a 24 hours gym, I went there today and there were 5 people on the outside trying to get in, but the tap to open the door was not working and there was no staff at the gym because it was Sunday. Very disappointing.
Negative experience: I have been a regular client of this gym for around 5 years and I have never seen the change rooms in such terrible conditions. Almost all the lockers are broken. Door missing, lock missing, it's very very bad. The fact that you have to open almost all doors tp find out which one is actually working is pretty disappointing.
Negative experience: Basically the same advice as i give my girlfriend: expect the least and you won’t be disappointed. What i feel is also important to know. At least 5% of the songs/videoclips they play are Pink songs. Not the hits, but the 42-year-old Pink b-side songs for which they didn't bother to invest money in the videoclips.
Negative experience: Echoing all the other reviews. This gym needs some serious money thrown at it. There is always a machine thats broken (every time i visit). Lockers don't work, theres a bucket lying around the gym because theres a leak somewhere. FITNESS FIRST NEWTOWN - if you continue to not maintain this gym, your members will look elsewhere (As they already are). Do better.
Positive experience: Edit(July): weighted battle ropes added and astro turf on sled track has been replaced. Changed the rating to 3 stars. As mentioned by other reviewers, friendly staff and members, 24hrs access is a plus, but just not a well maintained gym. Was willing to overlook a lot of the other issues that others have mentioned — broken lockers with no doors, dripping ceiling, poorly maintained weight machines, cardio machines held together with tape. But disrepair has now reached a point where I can’t actually complete my workout, and now have to look elsewhere to find a place to train. I enjoy training at other Fitness First gyms. Newtown is conveniently located so it’s frustrating that this is the one branch I can’t viably use. I’ll admit that my issue relates to specific equipment (eg weighted battle ropes and sled) which wouldn’t affect everyone. But the general lack of care in maintaining equipment in this gym is obvious and I think it reaches a level where some equipment is potentially unsafe. Negative experience: Awful. Dirty. Unkept. Old equipment. This gym is just terrible, the gym floors are old and falling apart. The equipment is faulty and quite frankly unsafe. The change rooms are mouldy, smelly, with many showers, sinks and lockers unusable. Totally left to fall apart. No value for money and would not recommend to anyone.

Negative experience: Equipment isn't great, leaky roof, aircon was really poor in summer, it got very warm upstairs. I was told I could transfer my membership to someone else by 3 different staff members (also by the T&C's) but after 3 weeks of waiting, Fitness First went back on their word and told me it was misinformation. Not honouring T&C's is very poor, would avoid them at all costs
Negative experience: I loved this gym for years and have deliberated for so long before sending this. Individual lockers have been broken for well over 2 years and nearly all of them are broken in half of the male change room. Equipment is rusty and held with tape, many pieces are out of use at any one time. The nice looking sled track now has grass missing off the tracks. Plus they fixed the leaky roof by putting in new carpet. Worst Fitness First in Aus?! Staff and users are great but the gym is a joke.

Negative experience: Possibly the worst costumer service iv ever dealt with please do not make the same mistake as I did and sign up with any kind of Fitness First. They are terrible to deal with and will most likely try and keep taking your money even tho you have cancelled multiple times. Complete scam.
Negative experience: Newtown Fitness First would have to be the Worst Fitness First I have been to, besides the aircon on upper level not working during summer and unworkable equipments , the gym CANT even meet minimum standards of having a water fountain working on both floors

Negative experience: I have been patient and have been hoping things will improve at Newtown Fitness First. But things have not..... The Newtown Fitness First is very poorly maintained, most of the lockers cannot be locked, some without doors. I have complained before Christmas (ie more than 4 months ago). Apparently the management is aware but no actions have been taken. The receptionist team seems to be well aware of the issue and they have apparently conveyed the message to management. I have seen other Fitness First branch put up a sign that apologise if the particular locker does not work. One day, one of the members will have his belonging stolen from the unlockable lockers, who then is responsible? On other issues - water bucket is often seen to collect dripping water during rainy days, equipment has parts missing and no warning signs to say things will be attended to soon, the 24/7 side entrance smells awful, cleaning is seriously required, I question how frequently the shower cubicles are cleaned and attended to - empty containers can be seen the next day (I use the gym frequently sometimes), empty shower gel does not get topped up. The 24/7 access is convenient, but many other gyms are providing such access too. Surely there must be someone within Fitness First that cares? 18 February 2022 post.
Fantastic experience: Love it, love the place the customer service, perfect gym
Negative experience: It used to be a good gym. There is no maintenance on the machine, it is frequent to find screws from machine on the floor. There are plenty of dumbells, barbells and accessories on the floor all over the gym. Half of the top lockers are not working and some are hanging There or removed. There is no air con, only temporary fans at each corners, there are leaks from the ceiling for years with buckets to collect water. The PTs are self-focused, drop their weight when they're working out, against their own rules, it is frustrating. You are welcome by good receptionists however they're are here just for few weeks. The gym is just unsafe and not maintained.

Negative experience: Asked one of the staff in June to cancel my membership as I was moving houses - they said yes. Found out in November that the staff member did not cancel the contract. I called up and asked AGAIN, but as per usual I get an email on the 31st of December from debt collectors Debit Success saying that I owe $350 (payment since JUNE). Called up 5-6 times, hung up by staff, and sent multiple emails all for no help at all. Now threatened with legal action and uni student has to pay $351 due to staff error. Safe to say will not be going to Fitness First again

Fantastic experience: There was a very accomodating man who explained to me how to upgrade my membership with all the necessary information I needed from the prices to the exact weeks left I had for my contract called Liam. He also came off very confidently which was a definite plus.

Fantastic experience: Fitness First Newtown is one of the best gyms I've trained at. The staff are very accommodating and and community is very friendly. I highly recommend using the sauna and steam room after a workout. The group fitness class instructors are also very friendly.

Fantastic experience: Having recently joined I'm finding myself feeling positive.ive really made a great choice.Im loving the classes .Doing my own workouts as there's plenty of equipment to choose from.The staff are very friendly and I always look forward to each visit. Now I've been here a few months .it's a new year and I can honestly say I won't be leaving fitness first anytime soon!
Negative experience: I have no complaints regarding the gym, it seems to me a large and well-equipped gym but my score goes directly to the staff, especially Mitch Heaven, since they did not have the ability to solve a problem that other fitness firts gyms give me. And his ironic tone when answering emails.
