The sub zero temperatures have played unfortunately played havoc with our heaters causing them to freeze overnight with a consequential drop in pool temperature which takes us most of the day to recover. We are in discussions with the owner of the facility in search of a workaround for this problem as it tends to plague us from time to time when the weather graces us with those cold temperatures.

Hey Toni, we were so sorry to hear of your recent unpleasant experience at the Great Artesian Spa. Obviously, we strive to ensure that all our visitors have the absolute best experience but very occasionally we will have something go wrong and we truly appreciate feedback and comments which alert us to potential problems. We are required by State Health Legislation to keep a (small) level of chlorine in our pools to ensure that there is no possibility of the presence of water borne pathogens. Normally, this is undetectable however, recently, a malfunction in our automated dosing system occasioned a temporary brief rise in free chlorine levels resulting in the chlorine smell you experienced. While the levels were still within safe operating guidelines (we carry out water tests 5 times daily at a minimum) it certainly did diminish the amenity of the spas while we rectified the problem and brought the levels back to the target range. We have since been monitoring the levels closely to avoid any repeat of the problem. Fortunately, the mineral content of the great artesian water remains basically stable in any case.

Thanks for your feedback BBL. We were dissapointed that your visit to the Great Artesian Spa did not fulfill your expectations. As a Not For Profit community organisation we operate the Spa to attract visitors to Mitchell to stimulate the local economy. Our pricing is reflective of the cost of operating the facility to the highest standards of safety and customer service. These are really only break even prices but they do enable us to provide employment for 10 people in a small rural town which has been battered by local government amalgamation and years of drought.

The chlorine you speak of is unfortunately a requirement of Queensland Health and we are obliged to maintain pre-determined levels for sanitization (and of course the well being of our visitors). The advent of Covid 19 has brought particular emphasis to ensuring we maintain that level at all times. Your comments are however appreciated and understood.

The loss of water temperature has been caused by record low water consumption in Mitchell as a result of the unseasonally cold and wet winter thus far. This has meant that the hot bores, which are our primary heat source, are only operating spasmodically to keep up with demand allowing the reticulation system to cool off in the downtime. Compounding that, the extended run of sub-zero temperatures has caused our supplementary heaters to fail during the night hours once again causing a significant loss of water temperature. It has been quite devastating for our staff who work tirelessly to provide everyone with a great experience. No doubt it is even worse for our loyal customers who have driven great distances to enjoy the Spa only to find the water being so much cooler than usual. Fortunately, Maranoa Regional Council has expedited the installation of additional supplementary heating which is being fitted as I write. Spa staff are also working on ways to prevent the overnight failure of the existing heaters so, we expect to be back to offering lovely hot water very soon.
