Brunswick Northside Boulders: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Loved it. Took a group of lads there, 9-14, to burn some energy. It was great.
Fantastic experience: Very welcoming staff, she was clear and direct with instruction beginners about the how to do, what to do, what colour and tag meant, super friendly and patient! Definitely had a great time, great price for the session and overall had an excellent experience here. Definitely recommend coming again.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, friendly staff!
Fantastic experience: 10/10 friendly climbing gym. Friendly staff. Friendly climbers. Sick climbs always. Great music. Best vibes. Both ongoing and casual memberships here also give access to the other 2 Northside Gyms in Northcote and at the Lactic Factory in Fitzroy. 10/10
Positive experience: Not traditional BBQ as the meat isn't smoked but it was all super tasty and all the typical American sides were on the menu.
Fantastic experience: Kids (8, 12, 16) and I had such a great time. On arrival staff were very welcoming and helped get us set up. Heaps of space to climb and it really is great fun. Highly recommend.
Positive experience: Good place!
Positive experience: Positives: Nice big windows Nice staff You get two free weeks included in your first visit The routes feel a bit old school Negatives: The climbing wall feels a bit unloved. The holds seem like they never get washed as they are so dirty. The walls look like they need repainting. Not that big.
Fantastic experience: totally blew my knee, atticus was super nice and coffee was the best I’ve ever had. i was probably high on penthrox. would go again 5 stars
Fantastic experience: I had an amazing time here with my friend. The staff were incredibly friendly and so helpful. One of the stuff members taught me how to fall safely before starting, which made me feel so much more confident. The atmosphere was super supportive and encouraging. Can't wait to go back and climb again! 5/5 stars.
Fantastic experience: Good problems and fun atmosphere
Fantastic experience: such a nice place!!! eventhough it's not the biggest and they don't offer the most variety the hall itself is just so nice :) cool staff as well!! will be back ofcourse :D
Fantastic experience: I am dying to know how to rate 6 stars. Such a great place at every possible way!
Positive experience: Great problems, the most lovely puppies and wonderful staff. The only thing that could be better is the cleaning of the rocks. They get fairly slippery due to accumulation of chalk + sweat + dust...
Fantastic experience: The place to climb!
Positive experience: Great spot well set kinda small
Fantastic experience: F.A.B.
Fantastic experience: Very nice place with a lot of variety in different difficulties. By far the nicest staff, very helpful.
Fantastic experience: Despite smaller size than some, high density of routes. Whole gym refreshed every 6 weeks. Setting day currently is Wednesday. Great route setting from perspective of an intermediate climber. Coffee and music are great too. What more could you want? ✅
Positive experience: Good place. Holds could use a good clean more than once a month tho
Fantastic experience: Got into bouldering through another gym, but this one is best bang for buck in terms of difficulty. The climbs here are geared to push you a bit, so definitely not recommended for absolute beginners, but if you're already an initiated climber, this might be the gym for you! Size is adequate and clientele are good vibes. Bike posts to lock up + sink outside the bathrooms to wash the chalk off your hands. Great spot. Would recommend.
Fantastic experience: Clean gym and fun boulders! Friendly staff!
Fantastic experience: Super friendly & easygoing stuff and environment! In addition, the gym is nice and cozy too! (: They have discounts for students too!
Positive experience: walls need more maintenance! Place is really nice and staff is great but but the conditions of the walls are not very well.
Fantastic experience: Wow what a cool place! Staff are so lovely and really good walls, a deal on at the moment where you get two weeks free, there’s great coffee and cute dogs here! Thanks :)
Positive experience: Really nice and friendly people and a good place to start bouldering
Fantastic experience: This is one of my favorite gyms, great setting, great vibe and friendly staff. Nice little training area in the back.
Negative experience: Poor ventilation in the summer heat without adequate aircon or fans. The place is a hotbox, and they won't let you take off your shirt.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff and bouldering community. 6 stages of difficulties and a mystery difficulty coulered orange. There is a mini gym at the back of the place and a moonboard. Max blue stage, would come again to get my upper body rekt.
Fantastic experience: Probably the best climbing gym layout I've ever seen. With natural sunlight coming in from both ends of the gym and the great wall angles the place just looks stunning. The gym is also filled with comfy couches and all this combined make it a joy to just hang out there. Routes range from beginnger to intermediate+ . Recommend everyone to check it out.
Fantastic experience: Good bouldering place, pretty chill and great atmosphere to climb
Fantastic experience: Very good variation on routes, friendly staff, can be a bit busy in the evenings but generally enough space to always be climbing
Fantastic experience: Fun activity
Fantastic experience: I love this place. I always have a great time, the staff is awesome and the community spirit is strong and keeps on growing.
Positive experience: The vibe is chill, the problem setting is fine, but not gonna lie, the place is filthy. Like, a bit of dirtbaggery is all well and good, but this crosses the line into squalor. It's hard to tell what holds are in, because they're all so coated in a thick layer of chalk, shoe rubber and dead skin that they all look grey. TL;DR nice place, but pressure washers are a thing, guys.
Fantastic experience: 29$ including shoes hire, no time limit. It’s a good workout.
Fantastic experience: After a couple of times visiting, this place is really great. The employees are welcoming and the community is fun and supportive. Easy to make friends and have a good climbing session with other people. Location is also a big plus as it is so easy to access. Usually climbing in another country, this place is not as big as I was used to, but it seems like the size fits the amount of people, and so far it didn't feel too busy at any of the times I've arrived.
Positive experience: You'll need to sign up and do an induction before you start (if you've never been to Northside Bouldering). Induction was good. I found out how important resting and stretching is between each attempt.
Fantastic experience: Just a delightful time
Fantastic experience: Last time I went to this gym was pre-covid. You had a free hand moisturiser you could use for free on the way out.. felt real dank and menthol/minty. What brand was it? Rhino? legends
Fantastic experience: Great little spot to bolder, relax and play some chess
Fantastic experience: We love this place. The community is so encouraging and supportive, with the coaches especially investing time and wisdom into our young ppl. The regular swapping of the wall formations keeps my son constantly motivated and developing. Thanks for creating such an incredible space!
Fantastic experience: Good family holiday fun!
Fantastic experience: Great gym to get into for intermediate climbers - pretty great coffee here as well. Really supportive community :)
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff. Great routes. There was also a nice dog there. A good place for beginners and people looking to develop their bouldering skills. The warm up area has equipment to help you build some strength for the wall.
Positive experience: I like climbing here.
Positive experience: Northcote gym is better
Fantastic experience: My first time doing this and it was really awesome, small place but for a beginner like me it was perfect
Negative experience: Staff are very friendly and the facilities are fully featured if a bit small. The deal breaker for me is that for some reason I only ever get injured (minor or serious) at this gym. I've been climbing and bouldering for 10 years at a variety of gyms: Blochaus, Lactic, Urban Climbs, Hard Rock, North Walls, to name a few. Never been injured at any of them. 3-4 years I injured the tendons in ring and middle fingers on both hands at Northside. Took 18 months before I could climb again. Not saying it's causation, just there's a strong correlation. Route setting doesn't agree with me
Fantastic experience: Friendly atmosphere, spacious, great fun. One of the best bouldering gyms in Melbourne
Fantastic experience: Great selection of beginner walls, helpful staff and a great vibe.
Fantastic experience: Great variety of climbs with good tunes and friendly people.
Fantastic experience: A little bit smaller than the other bouldering gyms but it’s very easy to get to and the membership is quite affordable. Beyond bouldering, it bas a good gym section, too!
Fantastic experience: A lot of fun, with friendly staff and community.
Fantastic experience: One of the best gyms in Melbourne. Staff are lovely and routes are fun.
Fantastic experience: Great facility, walls change a lot. Small but complete free weights section, heaps of bouldering specific conditioning equipment. I was amazed they have bandaids just sitting out if you need one. Shoe rental like 4 bucks, chalk rental cheap too. Friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Great, friendly staff and members. Good atmosphere, music selection and frequently updated problems.
Fantastic experience: Good fun. The people are friendly and polite. Will be going again.
Fantastic experience: Finally, a kid friendly bouldering studio! If you’ve been googling for a bouldering place for your kids, look no further. My 8 and 10 year olds had a great time. Friendly & informative staff too! Will definitely be back!
Positive experience: Great vibe. Seeing a lot of people help each other to improve their bouldering skill, even they are strangers to each other.
Fantastic experience: Love this place, can't wait to go back when it opens! Great coffee for a fitness place!
Fantastic experience: Kindly staff
Positive experience: A generally comforting nice place. Unfortunately a lot of the footholds are too polished and some new hand holds are quite rough and the walls are grubby and broken. Change rooms and toilets are small but nice design. The staff are friendly but overly specific and not gauging your vibe or experience. Definitely felt my energy come down while talking to them. So if you want chill climbing these guys are great, if you are wanting something a bit more exciting and professional then maybe Urban Climb Collingwood.
Fantastic experience: Good bouldering gym. with the doors open it gets some good air flow.
Negative experience: It's kinda gross that they let people climb the walls in street shoes, transferring all that muck from the street/bathroom, to the holds, to my hands. It's a really small gym and It's always way too crowded unless you come at odd hours. No showers, tiny change room and 1 bathroom. But it has a weights gym so that's neat.
Fantastic experience: Absolute legends that work here and run this place. North Side is more than just a climbing gym, it's a community. <3
Fantastic experience: Great place for bouldering.
Positive experience: The boulders are fun, but the place was just waaaay too packed when I went there for me to have fun. Contributing to this issue is the decision by the route-setters that many of the boulders should have sweeping lateral paths crossing each other, reducing the number of people that can be climbing simultaneously. Would definitely recommend, of you can get there at off-peak times.
Negative experience: Pretty underwhelming. Limited wall space. Crowded. Avg. route setting (less is more sometimes!). I checked the membership prices out of interest and the same as what I pay in London for access to 6 bouldering gyms with at least 10x the climbing area and world class setting. If this is 5 stars then indoor bouldering in Melbourne is ripe for disruption.
Positive experience: Is cool
Fantastic experience: Bit of confidence training. Love it.
Fantastic experience: Went there with a friend to try out the activity. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and we had plenty fun!!
Fantastic experience: Great place for beginners ... Friendly staff and the bouldering community is really helpful
Fantastic experience: Staff are friendly, atmosphere is always encouraging and supportive of beginners! Be careful of valuables as the gym is open to the public.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful people, staff, music. The whole place is a wonderful environment
Fantastic experience: My first time bouldering and it wasn’t easy. Upper body strength is a prerequisite. Maybe watch a YouTube tutorial as well. Overall I had an amazing time. The staff were super friendly and did an amazing job guiding us especially since we were beginners. Would definitely revisit.
Positive experience: Great problems, but the holds themselves are getting old. Also I'm not a great fan of frictionless walls.
Fantastic experience: Nice little bouldering gym. Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. You can rent shoes and chalk. Gets a bit busy after work hours - like usual ;)
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff and facilities. Fun routes that are changed weekly (small section by section). Difficulty level ranges from beginner to pro, and there are always ones that challenge you. Love going here and will be my go-to “gym” from now on!
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities awesome vibe and great boulder problems highly recommend...
Fantastic experience: Such a great spot to "hang". I "chalk" it up to the friendly staff. And you'll totally "fall" for the huge number of courses. From beginner to winner there's a challenge for all. But remember...You gotta be bolder to boulder!
Fantastic experience: Great place to climb, welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff :)
Fantastic experience: Love it, awesome place to train
Positive experience: Nice
Fantastic experience: Really cool place to climb, awesome environment and staff are really helpful and friendly
Fantastic experience: Best bouldering gyms in Melbourne
Fantastic experience: Best bouldering place in melbourne
Fantastic experience: very nice work guys.
Fantastic experience: Love this place. Such a good vibe, friendly people and some challenging climbs
Fantastic experience: A friendly place and great for beginners. Loved climbing here with my friend :)
Fantastic experience: Good gym great staff ok coffee and great fun. Good range of skill difficulty from your first time bouldering to V10s and up.
Fantastic experience: Not a Melbourne local but every time I'm down I hit this gym up. Great atmosphere and fun climbs.
Positive experience: If you have a low BMI, strong muscles and a brain for climbing - this is for you.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic open, air-filled space for climbing/training/and relaxing with a coffee. Brunswick is probably my favourite of the three Northside Boulders/Lactic locations as they've got the best combination of climbing space and training facilities however all of them are worth 5-stars in their own right. Northside Boulders have got me absolutely HOOKED on bouldering!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place, friendly staff and heaps of space
Fantastic experience: Great staff and facilities. But more importantly a great selection of problems
Fantastic experience: Helpful and friendly staff and great chill out area. The coffee and cake is delicious! The climbing routes get changed regularly to keep you interested
Positive experience: Great activity to try, but a very unorganised gym. Climbs don’t make sense according to their set grading system. Some yellows very difficult and some whites very easy. Not a good spot for beginners. Old grips and very slippery even when you hire shoes. Change room very small and uncomfortable.
Hi Nicole. We're sorry that you didn't enjoy yourself and that our grading system was not properly explained to you. Our grading system is organised by tape colour, and not by hold colour like some other gyms. This means that we are able to set one colour of hold throughout the gym every week with varying levels of difficulty. We hope to see you again soon! Thanks for the feedback.
Positive experience: Small but has some good problems. My only gripe is that the holds are worn and chalky. However, staff are super friendly and welcoming and I really enjoy coming here :)
Positive experience: Moderate sized gym in a great area surrounded by train stations and cafes. The climbs are constantly changing and of a variety of skill levels perfect for the complete beginner to the very advanced. A whole range of challenges including overhangs, different grip styles, and there is also a training area. Can usually find a good deal (try looking on Groupon) but also in-house deals and everyday prices are very reasonable. Great for getting information on transitioning to outdoors as well.
