Our comment from FitFit Australia about Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre:

Welcome to Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, a community hub with a variety of facilities designed for all ages and fitness levels. Our pools, including a 50m lap pool and a warm water hydrotherapy pool, are well-maintained, providing a great environment for swimming and rehabilitation.

Despite some mixed reviews, many users have praised our swimming lessons as excellent, taught by friendly and professional instructors. The customer service from our staff is often noted as being very helpful and accommodating, making your experience enjoyable.

However, we recognize there are areas needing improvement. Some visitors have voiced concerns about cleanliness in certain changing facilities and the maintenance of gym equipment. Traffic during peak times has also been a challenge, though we have put measures in place to assist with parking.

The centre offers numerous programs including aquatic classes, group fitness sessions, and swim lessons for children. We’re also committed to ensuring access for all members of the community and are addressing feedback regarding inclusivity and accessibility.

We appreciate your feedback and are continuously working to enhance your experience at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre. Join us for a swim or workout, and see the improvements made firsthand!

Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre: Opinions

Negative experience: Visiting here is a reminder of the folly of Councils in closing local pools. The traffic is awful, the pools are murky, the change rooms flithy.

Hi Brad, Thanks for the feedback. Please send us an email via [email protected] with the times and days you visited the Centre. This way we can look into updating our cleaning schedule. Unfortunately due to Christmas shopping traffic we can't do much here, however we did put on a traffic guard to assist people in finding a park at MAC. Best, MAC

Positive experience: Busy place. Pool is good. Other than cardio equipment, the gym has only one of each type of resistance machine, and they could do with a good clean and some basic maintenance, ie safety locking pins and springs missing etc. Staff are great, there advice about certain things differs from person to person, but thats not uncommon. Good place for beginners

Negative experience: As a ratepayer and someone who lives 5mins drive from the MAC- if I have the time- I drive across town to another pool to avoid having to put myself through what is always a disappointing and usually dehumanising experience. Despite very costly, protracted and recent renovations the condition of the centre facilities are appalling. The change rooms despite only being a couple of years old are in very poor condition and not cleaned regularly. It looks like whoever completed the changeroom renovation might have never worked on a bathroom before. The fittings used including the mirrors are not fit for purpose and are rusting already, and no doubt will need to be replaced in due course. You have to question who awarded that contract and on what basis. This approach seems to cut across any work done at the centre, every time I go there's always something out of order and contractors busily in attendance. The change rooms are freezing, the water temp in the showers varies wildly and the baby change stations are broken and unsafe- have been for months. The centre staff are typically Maribyrnong Council in their approach to customer service, it's a very "us and them" approach meaning that they see you as the customer as the enemy and treat you accordingly. The lifeguards are very young and I have very rarely if ever seen the same face more than once, unsurprisingly it seems like they might have trouble retaining lifeguards- this doesn't apply to the centre management who have been the same for as long as I have attended. There's no adult recreational or fitness swim squad offered, and no adult learn to swim. Most mornings the elite junior squad dominates pretty much every lane meaning that everyone else is forced to swim in one lane making it a crowded and unenjoyable experience. When I asked about this I was told that you can join in with the juniors, to date I haven't seen any adults actually doing this. When I looked into it It's quite expensive and heavy commitment as you must commit to a full term of non refundable fees. It makes me sad as this is a community asset which has so much potential however is not run for the community and is being so obviously mismanaged. This is unfortunately in keeping with most Maribyrnong council run assets in my experience. As our rates increase I think it's time we start to ask and expect more from these types of facilities.

Hi Tim, Thanks for taking the time to write a review. I'd encourage you to get in touch with the Centre management on [email protected] so we can address some of your concerns and look into some others with you. In particular around busy lanes and cleanliness. Regarding adult swim squad, we do have the Adult MACqua Laps program, which is included as part some of our different membership types (i.e. Ultimate or Aquatics). You can book these classes in as one offs, or can attend weekly and there is no ongoing commitment to attendance across a term. https://www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/mac/Lessons/Adult-swim-lessons. We'd encourage you to reach out to Centre management via the email address above and we can discuss your concerns with you directly. Best, The Team at MAC.

Negative experience: I recently had a disappointing experience at the Maribrynong Aquatic Centre 3 days ago that I feel compelled to share. I would give negative zero stars if I could. Unfortunately, the facility does not accommodate children with special needs, which is incredibly disheartening. It’s essential for all recreational spaces to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone, regardless of their abilities. Additionally, the center is not PWD (Persons with Disabilities) friendly, making it extremely difficult for those who may need additional support or accommodations. If you’re looking for a place that truly values inclusivity and accessibility, I would recommend looking elsewhere. It’s important that all kids have the opportunity to enjoy swimming and have fun, without facing discrimination. So I recommend do not go here during your kids holiday, all the staff are pretty horrible manager doesnt listen to the explanation of the parent.

Could you please get in touch with us via [email protected] and we can work through these details with you so we can understand where we can improve, and also offer greater support, in particular to PWD. Negative experience: Warm Water Exercise pool, Spa is good at this place. Except for that everything is a garbage. The men's changing room stinks like hell. The men's showers have extremely hot water temperatures that will burn your skin. Gym doesn't have proper ventilation. Lifeguards are arrogant as hell. pool water temperatures vary immensely and are not maintained properly. This place needs proper management. At least for god's sake fix the men's room shower and toilets. doesn't take a world to install a toilet freshener there and to maintain water temperatures in showers. Pathetic.

Hi Roger, Thanks for your feedback we're always happy to take this on board. We are currently upgrading the gym's ventilation system and these works will be completed around the 11 October. If you could please get in touch on [email protected] with which showers had the issue described, we can have the team investigate and make improvements. Best, The Team at MAC.

Fantastic experience: I WROTE a bad review and have since changed my mind. In fact, the people who run this place do so with a lot of humility. Things do, in fact, function very very well and my subscription is money well spent. There are things that could be better (aren't there always?) But by and large the staff here are incredibly friendly.

Negative experience: It smells and you are treated in the place as piece of garbage. While staff are good, the place is starving from having adequate resources. Negative experience: Me and my daughter came here for the first time. We thought it would be good and a nice welcome to the area, but unfortunately things didn’t exactly go to plan. Frost of all facilities were horrible, business not flushed and used tampons, pads, liners, and injections lying around. Not safe for young kids or frankly anyone at all. My daughter didn’t interrupt the sign placed on the diving boards so the lifeguard basically interrogated her and made her feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. My daughter said sorry but the lifeguard rolled her eyes. To top that off the same sassy queen came up again to us and she told my daughter she was not allowed in the pool even though it says 2-16 yo cannot coke in without adult supervision. That was the last straw for us. As we left she and her colleagues were staring at us which made us uncomfortable DO NOT COME HERE WHATEVER YOU DO

Andrew Kipa 1 year ago

Negative experience: It's disheartening to see that despite considerable investment in constructing a brand new sauna room, the temperature remains disappointingly low, depriving users of the authentic sauna experience and its associated benefits. Urgent attention is needed to rectify this issue, as evidenced by the widespread dissatisfaction among users.

Negative experience: We had lunch at the Cafe located inside MAC. My elderly mum asked to use the ladies room and the staff at the front desk said she had to pay $3 to use the toilet. Very disappointed as MAC is run by the Maribyrong council!

Negative experience: Doesn’t show clearly pricing. They should have cleared price display in the reception. Money is important now.

GJ47 J 1 year ago

Negative experience: I have heard of “ woman night” sauna , which extra $10 fees for entry, no matter u are a member or casual drop in. When I heard the idea, I was quite impressed. Surely the staff have noticed women feeling unsafe in the sauna & steam rooms. Males always check out women all around. However , $10 is such a money talk, and privilege power thing. Women who can’t afford extra $10, so deserve being checked , their feelings have been thrown out; —— I’ll give it a go, see how it runs for 1.5 hr, extra $10 service ; — Also agreed with one of previous comments, the toilets, shower rooms / change rooms, so dirty like a public toilet in the bush. —

Positive experience: Using the therapy pool here for knee replacement therapy. Can't recommend it enough. Pools and rooms are always clean. Would give more stars if they would fix the spa so that all the pressure didn't come out of two jets that people hog for hours while the rest is mediocre.

Chris Birt 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Great facilities and Lyn is a fantastic swim teacher for my 4 yr old, her approach can be stern but I have seen where previous teachers from other Aquatic centres make the experience more about songs than fundamentals. I have seen rapid confidence and capability from my daughter due to Lyn's approach In summary if I see that my child has acquired life saving skills, and that's all that matters to me. My 10c your child will not advance if your sitting on the bench watching, do your child and teacher a favour and reinforce the skill set in the pool before or after the lesson, skills in the water are taught by the teacher, confidence in the water is your duty to reinforce the risks and enhance their learnings with their educators. I know this, I didn't learn how to swim until I was 18 and was petrified of the water, I want my child to understand the risk and be equipped to combat the challenge. These are life saving skills it's not a hobbies. Chris

Negative experience: writing this to raise awareness to the misleading permit zone with in there car park.. for context i copped a fine here on my first visit when i was signing up for a membership to their pool within 10 mins copped a fine. on a day with plenty of parks EVERYWHERE. This has left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth and will be looking elsewhere for another leisure centre. as per a recent review describes the ridiculous nature of it - if you drive into the dedicated parking lot and there are those green 2P signs everywhere, you think you're good for 2 hours. All the lines on the floor are the same (worn) color except for the disabled parking spots. You avoid them and you think you're good... But you are not. There is a PERMIT ZONE which only has those vertical signs at the ends of the affected rows. I got fined 120$ for parking there even though it was almost empty, and honestly it's poorly signed and marked. They could paint the lines a different colour, and make it very hard to miss.

Andre Cheah 1 year ago

Positive experience: Came expecting that there would be like a more fun kids area or like a slip and slide thing. Most aquatic centres have it so it's a bit behind the times not to have one. Apparently it's got issues with the builder going into liquidation so don't see it being built anytime soon unfortunately. Staff don't seem to know what's going on either. Facilities are however slightly cleaner than others (maybe less people as well so...). Wanted to state a positive though. No family annual pass. Have to do like a 10 visit pass if you are looking for something more which is ok as well. Gives benefit on a smaller scale which isn't a bad thing. Right opposite highpoint so thats a plus (around a food court area. Even better) and there is 4 hour parking too which is great. If you come managing your expectations it's still a good experience overall.

Positive experience: Friendly and helpful staff. Attentive lifeguards watching every move. Has all the pools you need: Hydro pool, not the warmest I have been in. 50m lap pool divided into four sections, fast, medium, slow lanes and a swim play area. The spa is sizable. Steam room, is steamy and the sauna is busy often so never used. Granted I go in the mid arvo. Overall, good aquatic centre, $15.50 for full use.

Negative experience: They get one star because they allow sign up online but require you to come into the centre to cancel

F 2 years ago

Positive experience: Very nice facility and well maintained. However, here's a pro tip for you and this is the reason I left 3 stars instead of 5: if you drive into the dedicated parking lot and there are those green 2P signs everywhere, you think you're good for 2 hours. They could paint the lines a different color, and make it very hard to miss. Now, I will obviously pay the fine as it was my mistake for not noticing the cute little signs. My family's budget has been affected and I will avoid visiting the Aquatic Centre for 15 times, so I can save the money back. It won't make any difference for the centre, but I hope everyone who gets hit unfairly by this fine does the same.

Domenic Strangio 2 years ago

Negative experience: Have brought my daughter to swim here, as part of her normal growth and learning. The $6.50 child entry fee is reasonable and consistent with other facilities and no issue at all. But to insist on charging parents (who passively sit in the stand) a $3 spectator fee ??? is poor form, and effectively gouging’ by any other name. Shameful. Lift your game Maribyrnong aquatic centre management

Fantastic experience: Great pool and one of the few places in Melbourne you can actually use the diving blocks (although they’re the older style without wedges). Good parking, facilities. Negative experience: My friend had a terrible experience at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre. The manager, Jeff, was extremely rude and demanding. He accused my friend of not supervising her children properly and demanded that she get off her phone, even though she was already watching her children in the pool. When my friend didn't comply with his demands, Jeff threatened to call the police, which was humiliating and completely uncalled for. To make matters worse, Jeff also demanded that my friend's children get out of the water, which terrified them and caused unnecessary stress for everyone involved. Overall, her experience was extremely unpleasant, and the customer service at this centre needs to improve significantly. I strongly recommend that anyone looking for a family-friendly aquatic centre should look elsewhere. This place has a lot of work to do in terms of training their staff to communicate with customers in a professional and respectful manner.

Miss L 2 years ago

Negative experience: I recently visited Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre for my children swimming lessons and had a terrible experience. One of the staff members, the manager was incredibly rude and unprofessional. He accused me of not supervising my children when I was clearly keeping an eye on them, and even threatened to contact the police. My children were embarrassed and upset by the way he treated us. As a person of color, I feel that the manager actions were discriminatory and targeted towards me and my children. I do not recommend this place and urge others to consider alternative options for their aquatic needs. I hope that the management will take steps to ensure that their employees are trained to treat customers with respect and professionalism.

Positive experience: Good place to go for a swim. Entrance fees used to be so cheap, and spectators didn't have to pay 2$. I am disappointed in these changes. There are also a few minor hygiene problems, such as people spitting on the ground or the occasional used bandaid in the pool, though these are to be expected.

Dan B 2 years ago

Negative experience: Before I get into the bad part, would like to say that the 1 star is for the great instructors that tought my kids how to swim. The 0 stars part is for the policies this place has, the rude staff and dirty facilities. Here are few callouts for readers to consider: 1. My daughter does classes in the big pool but I need to make sure to look after her when playing in the 50cm deep pool. She is 9 y.o. and needs adults supervision unless she is 10. 2. You have to pay a fee to attend your kids classes, despite you already being charged for the classes. Also this rule clashes with item 1. 3. Staff are rude and conddencending with questions like: Where are your kids? (They were 2m away from me just FYI); Do you know how old your kids are? and my favorite, You need to pay a viewing fee to cover expenses, for example what we would do when a visitor has a heart attack? They could do with some simple human interaction training all these rude staff. 4. Facilities...showers, toilets and family changing rooms remind me of the drop toilets when camping in the middle of the forest. You guys need to start cleaning them. 5. 1 adult can only watch 2 kids. Today I saw a lady with 3 kids that was not allowed to get in and use the kids 50cm deep pool because her approximately 3 y.o., 5 y.o and 7y.o. were 3 to one adult and she couldn't supervise them. Lucky there was someone from the community that offered to look after one kid so they could get in. Hey council, this is a very poor rule for a woman that looks after 3 kids 24/7 but seems to be unfit to manage them in a kids pool. Or if you think your rule is right you should offer assistance to parents that have to look after 2+ kids simultaneously. To summarise, rude staff, rules that only someone with no kids can make and dirty facilities make this place a 0 star. But I guess you can get away with all these because you are paid by my rates, my lessons fees and there isn't another option.

Allan 2 years ago

Positive experience: Clean, friendly staff, pool temperatures are perfect (warmer fun pool and cooler lap pool). It can get very busy with swim lessons and swim squads, resulting in a small amount of available lanes - currently reduced to 25m. Loses a star as most of the family change rooms are currently out of action which makes it very hard for mixed gender family changing!

Maria Gonzalez 2 years ago

Negative experience: Not clean and very crowded during school holidays. Do not come here for a swim with kids until it's renovated. Better go to Move at Keilor East, brand new facilities.

G. Green 2 years ago

Positive experience: Over all my experiences at the facility has been fun, warm and enjoyable. Fun place and my daughter loves it. Staff has been kind and most times helpful. The only gripe I have is being charged an additional $2 each time I want to watch my daughter's swim lessons when I'm already paying for the swim lessons. I'm told this is called a spectator fee and it's NONSENSE.

Fantastic experience: It is a well run centre. The classes are great and Luke is an amazing teacher. The only drawback is that there is no seating along where most of the lessons are (there is seating over the other side of the pool). Changerooms have always been clean when we have visited.

Negative experience: Overall it has been a decent experience, however the pool seems to be quite deep, specially on the other end. Can I PLEASE request MAC/Council people to lower the water depth/height. I'm 5'1 and cannot swim to the other side of the pool and stand because the water is too deep. I know many of my friends have the same issue where we cannot swim a complete lap because it gets too deep (and scary) at the other end. Please lower the water levels so that more people feel comfortable swimming. PLEASEEEEEE!

Positive experience: Overall the facilities and staff are pretty good, I do wish the weekend opening hours were longer though. 6pm close is too early.

Negative experience: Direct debits over school breaks are an absolute wrought. Booked swimming lessons for a child on last week of term, told there is no lessons over the holidays so we'll see you after the break. Then noticed a debit for the two weeks break. Phoned MAC and asked why when there is no lessons on. Response, we bill you anyway as you are allowed access - it's in our terms. Seriously! - no discussions of that during the see you after the holidays discussion.

Negative experience: Very rude the Chinese girl life-saving...I hope they will bann you to work in public...rude face and rude manners. Pool is ok

Negative experience: Warm water hydro pool is very small. Steam and sauna could do with a good clean and not being allowed to take your water bottle inside the sauna seems a bit draconian. Unable to adjust water temperature of the showers, the ones beside the sauna are cold only, the ones in the change rooms are a fixed temperature and operate by sensor. Overall, not overly impressed with facilities or cleanliness

Negative experience: I really wish staff would actually LISTEN and ACTION feedback and complaints. The sauna is useless and now very old and breaks down every week. The latest solution is a notice saying "don't pour water on the heating element". NO how about replacing the heating element and fix the rather large gap under the door that lets the heat out! Been complaining about that for a year as well. We pay our memberships to have a fully functional sauna and right now I could sit in it for three days and not raise a sweat.

Negative experience: Bad service. I drive 40 minutes to take my mom to this place but they didn’t let her in because they said she didn’t vaccinated. My mom vaccinated in Viet Nam and she got the vaccine certificate, she showed the border that certificate and she can get in the country, I don’t know why this centre didn’t accept the certificate that she showed. It is ridiculous. My family is regular customers but we wouldn’t come back here again

Fantastic experience: Had not visited since pre covid, wow the place has had a full make over during lockdown, it’s looking fresh and the new tech is great, staff are friendly as always, no hesitation to rejoin

Positive experience: Ample parking, with 1, 2 and 4 hr zones. 50 metre swimming pool with 6 lanes for different speed swimmers and a 'physio' style area for those walking in the water or rehabilitating. At least two other pools; one children's play area and a large jacuzzi pool. Changing rooms have lots of room, with plenty of single, private shower cubicles and separate toilets. Staff are polite and helpful, as are 99% of the swimmers. Open nature of the reception, lockers and poolside areas are not to my liking, hence the 4 stars. (I do not like it that people can see direct into the pool from the entrance. I am no supermodel and prefer to limit the number of people who see me dressed scantily.)

Fantastic experience: Good range of equipment and plenty of it, plus a good lap pool, lockers, sauna - everything I need at a fair price. Unlike every other gym I have been to, the staff do not have sales targets so the environment is very relaxed. The staff was also very helpful, and my free workout planning session with Natalie was very beneficial. She was very professional, knowledgeable, friendly and had a good sense of humour. My only complaint is the gym is still using handwritten workout sheets (circa 1997), when I was expecting online workouts that integrate with a phone app.

Negative experience: Do not go hiere its a joke of a place all these 5 star reviews are fake made up by them

Fantastic experience: This place has indoor gym, indoor pools and spa facilities. Prices are affordable. They also offer membership programs or also just pay as you go available. The indoor cafe has good snacks, tea, coffee and smoothies. Separate pool areas for kids with slide and water sprinklers. They also offer lessons for bubs from the age of 6months old and above. Great time for families to bond. The staff is attentive and friendly. Large family changing rooms along with showers and bathrooms. Ample parking space available.

Negative experience: this place used to be good, now its run like circus, every other gym/aquatic centre has come back to normal pre-covid but these bananas are taking advantage of members, many members have left due to this, but the people who run this place don't care as its government funded, will never return, which is really sad as I used to love this place
