Our comment from FitFit Australia about Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre:
Welcome to Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre, a well-regarded facility in Sydney that offers a variety of swimming options for families and fitness enthusiasts. Highlights of this centre include:
- Friendly staff: Users consistently praise the helpfulness and professionalism of the staff, with many noting the supportive lifeguards and swimming instructors.
- Wide range of facilities: The centre features a large outdoor 50m pool, an indoor heated pool, and children's areas with a waterslide, perfect for family fun.
- Excellent swimming lessons: Many parents report positive experiences with the swimming lessons offered, appreciating the patience and teaching methods of the instructors.
- Accessibility: Free parking is available on-site, and it's conveniently located next to Hornsby Park.
However, there are some areas for improvement:
- Users have reported cleanliness issues, particularly in the changing rooms and pool areas, calling for better maintenance.
- The facility can become quite crowded, especially during peak hours and swimming lessons, making it difficult to find space.
- Some customers have experienced rude service from certain staff members, particularly in the café area where the pricing has been criticized.
Overall, Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre is a fantastic place for swimming and recreational activities, ideal for families looking to enjoy a fun day by the pool while also providing structured swimming lessons.
Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: A big thank you to the lifeguard who dressed my wound from friction burn and the front desk staff for explaining where the adult changing room is. On the other hand, the adult changing room and the unisex toilet probably need a good renovation as even though I’m completely mobile I did feel crammed in there as of seizures.
Negative experience: The staff were super rude and 4 dollar for a shower is crazy!! The floor were slippery and the temperature inside were hotter than outside.
Positive experience: I like the facilities and the size, however unhappy with swimming lessons here. Kids of different swimming abilities are grouped together and instructors thus have to get the teachings to the lowest level - meaning kids relatively at higher levels stay stuck on same level with other kids. One of the benefits of enrolling child is that parents get to do free swimming with kids, but it’s at the cost of kids learning really slow. Finding parking on busy days or during lessons (3pm-7pm) is a challenge. Except some rude staff, most are good and know what they’re doing.
Fantastic experience: Very good swim school. Both my kids are so happy to go there and love their teachers. They are really good with kids and their program is perfect to progress. Parents can come too and go for a swim for free
Negative experience: Due for a water change, White mould on the tiles in the outside pool. Concrete smells like piss. Changing rooms have urine all over the floor, indoor area burns your eyes. Good staff but overpriced canteen
Negative experience: Check the tiles out in play pool l,filthy. No room to play so small in the indoors. No room to play on out door one lane only for recreation. The other lanes are lap swim only. This rule is rediculous. No ventilation indoor area. Stings eyes very uncomfortable space. Toilet and bathrooms too small. NO ventilation very uncomfortable space. New pool is required with modern filtration system, in this area. Population exploding NO serviced. No choice for a decent swim.
Positive experience: Essentially it's wonderful however the following is for the contemplation of management. Sunday 3nov24 from 5.30pm to 6.15pm there was an adult throwing about kids from the side of the pool. These kids were also push each other into the pool from the side. This was at the TAFE end of the pool. The only 2 life guards I could see were at the opposite end of the pool at entrance to under cover area having a good old chin wag which appeared to be consuming all of their attention. During this time there were no lifeguard patrols walking around the big pool nor anyone sitting in the lifeguard chair. Hornsby Council, 1) PLease comment on the risks inherent with the above 2) how that behaviour sits with respect to pool rules 3) how you think other customers might feel about this
Fantastic experience: Great to keep confirming that to swim in a lovely pool in Sydney, you don't necesarily need to go to the CBD
Fantastic experience: Great swimming lessons for my son here, the instructor was amazingly patient with him.
Fantastic experience: Very good
Fantastic experience: Great aquarobics classes
Fantastic experience: Good pool nice staff ⚕️
Negative experience: Very difficult to Call customer service to change schedule. Never answer the calls. Some coaches are not nice to kids. They should setup process on how to reschedule the time because it took many times to call it.
Negative experience: The water tasted funny
Negative experience: I was so so..disappointed about kids swimming class. We moved from Canada last year. We took 2 terms of swimming class here. First term 2 times program in a week and last term 1 on 1 swimming class($60/30min) . Before, we have learned these swimming skills, maybe not perfect, but, total 2 terms I didn't see my son has improved. I want to talk with the staff to get to know what is wrong and what is their teaching program. She has no patience to explain things very much. very bad attitude that I never see.Only repeat “if you are not satisfied you can stop to learn here.It was very bad exprience for me in Austrilia. if you have expectations for you child. Here is not your best chose. it isn't worth it.
Fantastic experience: Always greeted with a smiling face on entry. Two grandsons having swimming lessons. The instructors are great, and sympathetic to the little ones who cry. Never forceful. Highly recommended to 'Learn to Swim' here.
Fantastic experience: My family's local swimming hole and my daughters very good swimming coach. Allways reccomend.
Fantastic experience: Go there for kids swimming lessons, ohh they love the atmosphere and play pool... it's nice to see them exhaust themselves..
Positive experience: Nice pools for all ages, good toilets and hot showers to freshen up after a swim or a workout at their gym. Also free parking under the pools with direct access via elevator or stairs to the front entrance.
Negative experience: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEIR VENDING MACHINES! they are broken and charge you without delivering the goods. The centre doesn't take any responsibilities which is not fair, as they rent out the space and get paid.
Fantastic experience: Great pool and facilities. Nice professional staff.
Fantastic experience: I love doing laps here - it's a lovely setting and the lifeguards and reception staff are very friendly.
Negative experience: Terrible experience, pool was super busy no space to swim! Hornsby council needs to consider to build a new pool for residents of Hornsby!
Positive experience: Great swimming pools and nice staff, but the car park is abit tiny and busy all time
Fantastic experience: Love it, outdoor pool cold at times, but that is to be expected. Cool waterside and excellent maintenance.
Positive experience: Not great for lap swimming, for anyone who works, as there are squads taking up half the pool both morning and evening, and the pool closes soon after the squads finish in the evening. This is often worse in the evening as aqua-robics often takes up two or three of the remaining lanes. During February and early March the pool is closed from 8:30 AM until 3:00 PM with swimming carnivals on weekdays, and some days on the weekends. This is unlikely to effect people who work weekdays, but it is also worth checking for evening carnivals, and avoiding trying to swim on those days. The mornings are generally better than the evenings (weekdays), for laps, with both being crowded, but generally the lanes seem to flow better in the mornings. On a hot day, especially during school holidays, the pool is ridiculously crowded, just a no go for lap swimming, except possibly early mornings. Also swimmer behaviour during peak times is often poor. The pool closes ridiculously early, 7:45 Monday to Thursday, and 6:45 Friday, Saturday and Sunday, closing within 15 to 30 minutes of squads finishing. This is the same all year around, and is especially ludicrous during summer, and doubly so on extremely hot days, as it is full daylight and very hot when the pool closes. It is also extremely crowded on hot days. By way of comparison the YMCA pool at West Pymble is open until nine weekdays. Overall transport is good, as the Pool is within easy walking distance of the station, and has some parking, which is often full especially in the evenings and during summer months. There are also bike racks available. Staff are friendly, and the facilities clean and modern, just not sufficient for the demand.
Positive experience: My family and I go multiple times a week, the facilities are good and the kids enjoy going. It’s a shame so much of the swimming space is closed off for swim squads and lessons if you’ve just come for day entry, it can be crammed. The parking is an issue but the kids love going!
Negative experience: 3-5 pm super crowded (6-8 ppl /lane) that I can understand. But the outdoor 50m pool and female change room are incredibly dirty. Not only with sand and leaves, but also bandages, hair ties, and just old dirt on the ground and the bottom of the pool. There are so many other options around this area for swimming. Never have had experience this. Plus, casual visit is $9.-
Fantastic experience: We are fortunate to have such a high quality facility in our area. Friendly staff and well kept. Parking can sometimes be difficult but still better than most places across Sydney. Now to work on my form…
Positive experience: If improve changing room, I'll give 5 star. Limited space for shower and change cloth, but toooo much toilet, what's the purpose for in Aquatic centre?
Positive experience: Great spot for swim on a hot day, easy parking all good.
Fantastic experience: Great centre, excellent lessons, friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: Great place to take children to have fun. Good food.
Fantastic experience: amazing pool with water and they even offer free caps to borrow when i forgot mine~~~ ^^ ALSO WORKS WITH FITNESS PASSPORT
Positive experience: The pool was pretty well heated but was too shallow. Its filled with little kids.
Fantastic experience: Indoor pool are heated just the right temperature set. Good family leisure place. Lacking some hot snack shack for a nibble after swim.
Negative experience: Filthy.....I have been using this pool for 5 years and, until recently, was very happy. However, over the last few months there has been a noticeable drop off in pool cleaning. The pool is filthy, with a large amount of leaf litter, hair bunches, plastic pieces etc etc as well as brown sediment in deeper areas, so thick that some pool users have written comments on the pool floor. It is clear that the pool floor has not been vacuumed for a long time. In addition, when swimming, the water contains numerous floaters (plastic etc) which highlights the poor filtration. The conditions are disgraceful and a poor indictment of pool management.
Fantastic experience: My favourite place to have a swim, though they could make the water warmer
Fantastic experience: Very good I recomened it to anyone doing swimming to fdo it.
Positive experience: The pool facilities are good. However parking is a nightmare. If you are taking a child for a swimming class etc after 4pm don't assume you can park there easily
Positive experience: The indoor pool is usually closed to the general public as is being used for swimming lessons. Also there is no sun screens over the outside pool. What about people who don't wish to expose themselves to sun/skin cancer
Positive experience: Always busy serving community and has nice heated 25M pool(indoor) and fresh salt water 50M lane outside
Positive experience: They didn't tell us that all indooor pools are occupied with swimming lessons on a weekend - neither over the phone nor when we arrived and bought the tickets! Water temperature in the indoor pools is not 30 as they tell, barely 28, which makes a huge difference in the swimming comfort for some people.
Fantastic experience: The centre is great for kids learning to swim but also on a hot day with the choice of indoor or outdoor pools. The outdoor pool has a depth of 1.2m making it a great option for a swim in the sun with your little one. The middle indoor pool has a depth of 1.1m. I take my daughter here for the Learn To Swim school every week and it’s a fantastic program, the staff are very patient with the kids and parents. Highly recommended.
Negative experience: Outdoor pool is not heated nor is there adequate supervision from staff. Kids dive bombing the whole lane near other kids swimming. Toilets and showers show signs of mold and other bits of wear and tear. Men’s toilet had tissues all over a couple of the stalls and standing water throughout 60-70% of the changing room. Probably would not be back and would rather commute an extra 20-30mins each way for a better experience.
Fantastic experience: Great for children's swimming lessons, large lap pool outside and small gym inside for basic workout, passport fitness works for the gym
Fantastic experience: Beautiful outdoor pool. Love swimming here on a sunny day.
Fantastic experience: Love swimming here almost every day. Staff are lovely too.
Fantastic experience: I have been swimming here for 55 years and it's my favourite place to go. It can be difficult to park when swimming lessons are on, so pick your time.Even in winter, the pool deck is warm as long as it's a sunny day.
Positive experience: A great place to cool down in the summer. Great pools and facilities.
Negative experience: Im surprised by other good reviews tbh. The water was so smelly and you could tell it was loaded with cleaning chemicals. I honestly did not it and definitely wont go again.
Positive experience: A reasonable public swimming pool. Nothing extraordinary. The shower area and lockers need more maintenance and cleanliness. Most of the indoor pool area is always taken up by instructors and students. So little to no space for a leisurely swim! Good and safe place for children to get used to water.
Fantastic experience: Free Family pass during class term is Amazing I even wanted to move to Hornsby area. (Regret living in Northern beaches) Always worth travelling 25 mins from home here for lesson and extra swimming with kids Great facility and friendly staff (life guards are always there too - I know they are not a babsysitter)
Positive experience: Hornsby Aquatic Centre was ok. It wasn't the best for keeping kids occupied - it only has one water slide and it was out of action the day we were there. Apart from that, there were a couple of kiddy pools with a couple of sprinkler things. That was about it. Probably better for serious swimmers. There were indoor and outdoor lanes.
Negative experience: Forget using the indoor pool. The outdoor pool is average clean. Anarchy reigns and no one checking lanes, with slow swimmers swimming in the fast or medium lane. Also kids constantly bothering crossing lanes during crowded weekends. I am a member only because is a walking distance from home but I miss fitness First pools facilities. Changin rooms are old and not up to date. Showers lose pressure as soon as two people have a shower at the same time means always because it is always crowded making you sticking to the tiles to try to rinse yourself up. The showers are not enough and you have to wait ages to get one. The gym areas is quiet. Note: there is a treadmill that has been out of order for two months now. Also no one ever checks if people are using towels to keep equipments dry and clean for other users. The feeling is that the air-conditioning is not working and there is a portable fan ventilating the place. What to say? It is a classic example of how a council facility works under public service management. Average and approximately. Is it worth the $17.00 weekly membership? Just because it is very close to home for me yes. However if you don't mind drive, For a couple of dollars more fitness First with swimming pool facilities have higher standard.
Positive experience: Excellent facility for swimming enthusiasts of all ages.
Negative experience: I am a regular at Hornsby aquatic centre as my kids are part of the swimming squad in the outdoor pool. However time and time again I have a bad experience with the chip shop. The service is so incredibly slow that the food is not even worth it. Not only is it expensive but the chips are also coles microwave chip quality. The young man working at the register should probably consider a different career path as he is extremely slow and does not seem to know how to count money. The two women in the back were also talking the whole time while the line extended up the ramp. I do not recommend getting chips or any food from here and to hold your hunger as westfield is not far. Other than that I typically enjoy my days at the pool.
Negative experience: If you go on a Sunday afternoon as I do with the intention of getting a workout in the lap lanes then forget it. The lap lanes are not monitored at all and are often full of parents teaching their kids to swim and people who don’t know how to swim. Also the pool is filthy. If you want a great lap lane experience and a clean pool go to Pymble pool instead.
Fantastic experience: It has indoor pool and outdoor pool, big and small to suit everybody. It also has baby swimming class.
Fantastic experience: Great swim school, easy parking on street if car park full.
Fantastic experience: Water is very clean and not too crowded. Swimming classes are great. Every teachers are being nice and kids love swimming now.
Fantastic experience: Parking for 100 cars, loads of space, priced right, clean loads of different options
Positive experience: The place is amazing especially when the water slide is open Cafe really overpriced though
Negative experience: Poor facilities for one of the most expensive pools in Sydney. Other pools that charge similar at least have a view, or a cafe that's open. Dirty and stuffy bathrooms. Hornsby council really didn't consider all the units they approved and continue to approve to biuld when making an aquatic centre with two pools and one kids pool. The pool already needs an upgrade.
Negative experience: Got complaints for a girl hiding underwater and not coming back up. My friend jumped on her by accident but she was not seeable so wasn’t fair whatsoever.
Fantastic experience: Super friendly staff and the pool is great restrooms are serviced regularly excellent experience consistently
Positive experience: such a great and family-friendly pool, with a beautiful bush backdrop. So inspiring with the birds waking up on a morning swim.
Positive experience: A really lovely outdoor and indoor pool. It was clean and there was a lot of seating and the inside pools had a lot of features for little kids including a slide. The food was good as well.
Positive experience: Everything is nice, I would have given 5 star if it wasn't for the rude receptionist.
Negative experience: Fabulous facilities, but unfortunately I found the leader and assessor in the Learn to Swim program extremely rude and patronising. The teachers themselves were lovely, but some appeared to be uninterested in their chosen lesson. After one year of lessons twice a week in Stingray group, my child started to tire of the same old thing. When I mentioned this to the woman in charge, she told me to go elsewhere. She berated me in front of all the spectating parents for talking to the child’s teacher and called my child’s stroke “shonky”. She also called me “Grandma” in front of my child, where she did not know that my child is fostered. This has been ongoing, but I think that the learn to swim program does not take into account the views of the teachers themselves or the child’s individual ability. In summary, because this woman is so rude and supercilious, I am not recommending the program. I have now been to another centre, and have found a class which does do PASS (a child survival class) which teaches children survival skills like treading water and breastroke. Also it turns out that my child is ready for stroke development ; that is ALL the strokes.I have heard other parents complaining about above mentioned assessor and I shall be leaving. Today my child was with some almost beginners. Is this a punishment to the child or me? Disappointed in the attitude!
Positive experience: Great place for a relaxed swim. Most of the lifeguards are pretty chill. The outdoor heated pool rarely gets that busy. 3 hours free parking underground. The waterslide isn’t open all the time though.
Positive experience: Great place for learning to swim and as a leisure for the whole family. It has his own car park underground. Next to Hornsby Park which has a little playground and close to the shops.
Positive experience: Nice pool with bits for kids, water slide and splash area, and large outdoor 25m pool for lane swimming. Water is always clean and facilities well maintained.
Fantastic experience: Very good place for kids to have some fun playing in pool.
Positive experience: Being a public place, it is well managed and lives up to industry quality and facilities standards. It is relatively new so time will tell if the standards are maintained over the course of time but for the moment it is a great place. The only downside being it is too crowded (which is why the 4 stars) as they not only have swimming lessons but there is a reasonably sized water play area for kids.
Fantastic experience: Great fun in the leisure pool with my 3 year old son.
Fantastic experience: Really quite good. Parking is good, venue is clean and pool is well laid out.
Positive experience: Good place to get kids swimming lessons. Many coaches with different teaching style. You can also change your coach if your kids can't cope with the lessons. This centre also provides once per day lessons during school holidays which I think kids would improve their swimming skills much faster than once per week. The adults swimming class sounds good too. I would like to join when kids are old enough to change their own clothes.
Fantastic experience: Lovely pool for all ages. Water is clean, comfortable temperature for young kids. Change room and shower (great warm water) are maintained well. Easy parking near around.
Positive experience: It's a nice enough pool but you are completely excluded from using it while swimming carnivals are on. So for two months of the year, Mondays to Fridays during the hottest part of the day you can't use the outside pool, but then they also shut the inside pool during those same times. Leave the general public *something*! I won't be buying a multi visit pass again.
Fantastic experience: Generally very clean pools, outdoor lap pool. Inside kiddies pool with splash toys. Indoor lap training pool and a slide that's sometimes open.
Positive experience: Good swimming pools indoor and outdoor, but it's necessary to have sauna and separated spa.
Negative experience: oh seriously - the "covidsafe" rules for this, at best ok, place are draconian and a total turn off. See ya!
Positive experience: Nice pools, and an interesting small but functional gym. Good value if you do swim and workouts and don't want to pay for two subscriptions. I wish it can stay open for a big longer though.
Positive experience: The centre is great. The whole family can enjoy. Nice and professional staff. The only issue is the cafe. Really limited food options. Like 2 or 3 which makes it hard to have snacks there
Positive experience: One of the best aquatic centres around. Good for both family fun and lap swimming. The only downside is that it is getting a bit crowded with the population increase in Hornsby. Time for the council to plan for extension or alternatives.
Fantastic experience: It is a nice place for everyone to enjoy. The leisure poor has some facilities to entertain the kids and can be very busy during weekends. The outside pool is nice and well maintained. The centre has two family/disabled shower, which is family friendly. Love going there.
Fantastic experience: Great place for kids to learn swimming ♂️ even though the progress is slow, but there's an indoor heated pool suitable for winter cold days.
Positive experience: Great heated indoor pool area for kids, short heated lap pool, 50m pool outdoors. Amenities etc well looked after.
Fantastic experience: Staff are always courteous and knowledgeable. Facilities are top class. Bathrooms and change rooms are always clean.
Fantastic experience: Nice swimming pool. Great facilities for kids. Long 50m outdoor lane.
Positive experience: The outdoor 50m pool is clear and sunny. They're is a carpark downstairs. Indoors are various kids areas. The change rooms are clean and the floor is relatively dry.
Positive experience: Let's see if the score improves when the renovations finish They've been taking a while, so they've had every chance
Fantastic experience: Beautiful setting for the outdoor pool, clean water, friendly staff, good notice of lane availability, warm showers
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility, and friendly staff. Love the kids' waterside.
Fantastic experience: Great my daughter has been swimming lessons but now she not but the have taught her well I recommend. She has a swiming carnival in two weeks so it's a great place to practice and get going.
Positive experience: Great 50m outdoor pool. Always good to bump into friends here.
Positive experience: Very nice and clean. My 7 year old enjoys the waterslide inside.
Positive experience: love the pool, hot chips the best!!! but....when its over 30 and its packed more lanes need to be allocated to the non lap swimmmers. overall its a fun day and staff and swimmer's are respectful if each other.
Negative experience: At this point, and especially comparing to other pools around Sydney, I think Hornsby pool needs a major update/upgrade. The family play area for kids is smaller than our dining room...it's absolutely inadequate to accommodate parents with their kids especially with summer coming up, it's going to be WAY TOO CROWDED and potentially dangerous for everybody. Additionally, there's practically only 2 things kids can play, there's no other interesting pool slides around like the one at Ryde Pool. So please please please, upgrade the place, it's about time now.
