Our comment from FitFit Australia about Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre:

Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, located in Marrickville, Australia, is a well-equipped and friendly facility that caters to swimming enthusiasts of all ages. The centre features a large 50-meter indoor pool, providing ample space for lap swimming as well as various kids' pools designed for younger swimmers. Many users appreciate the well-maintained gym and a wide range of fitness classes available, enhancing the overall experience.

Customers love the supportive and friendly staff, who are often described as helpful and accommodating. The atmosphere is generally positive, making it a lovely place to visit regularly. Some users noted that the instructors excel in their roles, providing quality guidance to both children and adults.

However, there are areas for improvement. Some users have expressed concerns about the cleanliness of certain areas, with reports of slimy pool walls and poorly maintained showers. Additionally, the water temperature in the pool has been criticized for being cooler than expected. The management of swim lessons has also been a point of contention, with some parents feeling that their children's needs are not adequately addressed.

Despite these criticisms, many visitors still recommend the centre for its facilities and excellent customer service. Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre continues to be a popular choice for both locals and visitors looking for a versatile aquatic experience.

Positive experience: The indoor pool is 50 meters in length, but the water might feel a bit cooler compared to other heated indoor pools. Additionally, the inside of the pool walls is a bit slimy, so it would be great if they could clean it more often. The showers are a little old, but they still do the job. Unfortunately, there's no power outlet for a hairdryer. Overall, it's a decent place for a swim.

Negative experience: The swim school management turned a situation where my child was not ready to level up into a very unpleasant experience where we felt pressured, emotionally attacked and we found my child’s needs not addressed properly. They only took my child’s age as the reason to level her up, and didn’t consider her ability or emotional readiness, in contradiction to their website statement "Progression out of Early Tadpoles is based on ability, age and emotional readiness". This happened despite my multiple attempts to communicate this and across several unpleasant incidents, even after I was told they were in agreement with me. The whole story next. My 2-year-old child was enjoying her swimming classes here and she was loving the water. When she was about to turn 3 I was told that she would have to level up at that age (from “Early Tadpoles” to “Tadpoles”). She was still not at the required level of skill and emotional readiness, so I asked to keep her in her current level, where I could be in the pool with her, and to let me know before upgrading her, so I could help her get used to the idea of not having me in the pool. To my surprise, I got an email from the swim class coordinator saying she was starting in the new level that weekend. I insisted in my disagreement, adding that my child was actually going through other big life changes then, so she would respond badly to an additional change. Anyway, nothing was undone so we attended the new class. The first day I explained to the instructor that I would have to slowly transition to being out of the pool, to which the instructor agreed. My child was crying badly during the first two classes. The instructor was still pressing for me to be out of the pool, so before the third class, I had a chat with my child about me progressively moving out of the pool in the coming classes. The instructor agreed with this plan. It was going well until the swim school coordinator came in the middle of the class and started pointing out problems, insisting that I should be out of the pool asap. That made my child very upset so it was another step backwards. This didn't show appreciation for my child’s needs and added to how difficult all this was for her. So I emailed the Learn to Swim Supervisor, and she confirmed that she would make the staff in the pool aware so they would work with me to apply this progressive approach. However, during the class everything happened again: the instructor asking me to leave the pool, my child crying, the coordinator coming to confront us, my child crying even more... They didn’t care that I had a written email from the Supervisor. Even another kid’s father confronted me, and some other parents had complained about us as well. All this made us feel quite rejected. A couple of days later I received an email from the Learn to Swim Team Leader adding fire to the rejection, that showed no sign of understanding of my child’s needs. This just added to my poor opinion about how this swim school is managed and how they treat their customers. After this, and just trying for my child to not keep having bad experiences, I decided to not battle anymore, so I started to leave my child in the water with her instructor and waited outside. My child spent most of those classes crying or trying to escape towards me, and not really doing the exercises. Any attempt I made to communicate with the instructor would go towards a confrontation, which I didn’t want to happen in front of my child again. So the situation became pointless, and my child and I decided to stop attending the classes. After this she was hating the water for a couple of months, which made me worried that her bad experience at AKAC had given her a trauma, but thankfully I managed to start doing swimming exercises with her again, and I hope she will soon be ready to join a swim class again. Definitely not at AKAC, though. I gave them two stars instead of just one just to recognise the great swim instructors (like Vanessa, Madison, Mary Eve and Lauren) that my child had before the above incident.

Fantastic experience: Great aquatic centre and gym, the staff is lovely and the vibe in general is really good!

Jessica Edwards 1 year ago

Negative experience: The lap lane system is constantly incorrect. Half the pool is only 25m lanes most of the time. That leaves 4 50m lanes, and one is always taken up with walking. But, I will have to keep going here when it's freezing or raining as it's the only 50m indoor pool that's close to me.

Positive experience: Fantastic centre wide range of fitness classes pleasant environment very responsive and helpful staff highly recommended

Fantastic experience: I love coming to this pool and do so 4-5 times per week. The gym is well appointed and pleasant, the classes are enjoyable and the pool itself is lovely whether you want to do laps or just take a more leisurely dip.

Joshua 1 year ago

Positive experience: One of the only indoor 50m pools in the area. Slightly aged compared to some of the other facilities (Ashfield, Bexley), but still reasonable and is a reasonably enjoyable facility to visit. Only downside is that the 50m pool gets cordoned off for squad training or gets halved into 25m sections quite frequently.

Negative experience: The new system is no good, and not really clear for the parents, and they tried to explain this that they should send an email to the parents and let them know what's going on, or the fee increases,Christmas holiday, I never receive any emails,,,from them

Negative experience: Won’t be back. Stone cold showers and pool suitable for little one’s confined to one roped lane of the warm pool which obviously everyone else had descended on.

Fantastic experience: Haven't been in over two years but I used to love this swimming pool!

Matthew Kernaghan 1 year ago

Negative experience: My experience was marred by small children repeatedly diving and bombing, despite the posted signs around the pool prohibiting these activities. The parents seemed indifferent to their children's disruptive behavior, and the staff appeared unconcerned as well. In contrast, at Ashfield Aquatic Centre, patrons seem more respectful of the rules.

Positive experience: Temperature in the 'wellness' centre is ridiculously hot. it was 28 degrees out but 35 degrees in. After 5 years oof issues they have still not managed to fix the aircon. Its aircon people not moon landings.

Negative experience: Customer service staff named Jenny has a horrible attitude. She is extremely rude and lazy, enjoys going on her phone instead of serving customers or taking the time to answer my questions. She seems to be very dismissive of her colleagues as I have seen in the past across the last year or so whenever I have visited. There are other staff members who are also rude like Amy, who enjoys cutting people off while talking. Seems like staff need some training in respect for others.

D P 1 year ago

Negative experience: Firstly, when inquiring at the front desk, we are consistently directed to use the provided email. Regrettably, it appears that this email isn't monitored and actioned within suitable timeframes. I personally sent an email two weeks ago, and unfortunately, it has yet to be addressed. This has happened several times. Secondly, I have noticed a concerning lack of consistency in instructors for my daughter's swimming lessons. It seems that almost every week, she is assigned a new instructor, which has adversely affected her learning ability. The inconsistency has led to challenges, as each instructor may not be fully aware of her current skill level, causing her progress to fluctuate. This has ultimately compelled us to withdraw her from the center and explore alternative options.

Fantastic experience: An amazing local swimming pool, a large pool for laps in addition to multiple smaller childrens pools, the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre offers entertainment for all ages. Sufficient bathrooms and a gym is present above the venue. The food sold at the store here is very nice and the aquatic centre's location allows for convenient access.

Fantastic experience: I've been an AKAC member for over a decade and have to say that the place has never been better since the Inner West Council took over from Belgravia. It was a nightmare when Belgravia ran the centre! The level of incompetence at that time was mind blowing. The Council and AKAC staff are constantly making improvements and adding classes and it's much appreciated. There's still a lot of work to be done but as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day. The instructors are fantastic (with the exception of one or two) and the new Wellness Team Manager, Maritza is a breath of fresh air and cares deeply about AKAC and its members. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful community centre at our doorstep. Keep up the good work.

Negative experience: In a city where you are spoilt for choice, this is definitely on the bottom end of pools I’ve visited. The facility is quite a bit older than it’s surrounding pools, there are smaller locker areas and changing rooms, and you seem to need to get a physical key from reception to use the lockers at all. When I was visiting most of the pool was closed for kids activities, including 3 lanes for a water slide, 4 half lanes for swimming lessons and squad practice, another two lanes for free swimming, which left 2 and a half lanes for free for laps. I asked if we could free up some additional space, there were 12 people attempting to swim laps in those few open lanes, but they said there were too many people to do that - which seems counter intuitive. I think I’d easily head elsewhere as this place was overbooked and mismanaged. Also the fee was just as expensive as Ashfield pool, which is a larger and nice indoor/outdoor experience. A shame, because I love the surrounding area.

Fantastic experience: I would like to give a shout-out to Jenny. A prime example of what great customer service looks like. She spoke to me in a very friendly and helpful manner over the phone. She helped me recover my goggles which I left at the pool the previous night, and very generously kept them aside for me while drove to go and get them. Thanks so much Jenny!

jacqueline garrett 2 years ago

Negative experience: Great pool. Though how about not having all lanes blocked off to 25metres? Atleast keeping a few open. I’ve been many times and not once has there been lessons in all lanes, so why block off all of them??

Arturo Granados 2 years ago

Negative experience: Since Inner West Council have taken over this venue the service has decreased markedly. My son attends swimming lessons here and today self appointed Duty Manager Aaron decided he wanted to "punish the children" by expelling them from the pool and threatened to cancel my younger son's swimming lessons because he felt it necessary to throw this weight around and bully a 5 year old. Not only was there no basis for him to target my child he then continued by making threats to cancel his swimming lessons. Discussions with the reception staff were utterly pointless as they didn't even know his name. Word of warning to parent's of young children, if you see this pool dictator on duty, have your children eat their lunch until the pool dictator goes for a walk lest they feel the wrath of the power tripping duty manager Aaron. Tosser, bully of 5 year old children. Utterly disappointing.

Negative experience: My reason why I gave 1 star is because the system management is terrible. They asked me to pay twice what I already paid. Always they give a fake reason like " is what the system shows" It took me like 10 minutes to explain to the person in the front desk and another 10 explaining to the manager Jeon the situation and he insisted that I have pay again what I paid already, it have been twice. Also to cancel the swimming pool lessons is a total nightmare..... I'm done.

Positive experience: If you prefer the beach for a swim you go to the beach and that's that, if you want to go for swim in a pool, try Annette Kellermanwhatever. Marickville pool. Indoor as well if you have sensitive skin and burn easily, no probs. If its cold outside and was looking forward to a swim, no problems, there's a medium sized pool too that's not as cold. Just find out what time the more wiser people in this world have training or exercise. It's not ideal unless you're the wiser.

Negative experience: Freezing cold showers, freezing cold main pool, freezing cold changing rooms reeking of urine, constantly broken water features in the paddle pool, new arbritaty rules that make it a lot less fun for kids. Very expensive for the mediocre quality of service. Not reccommended.

Jenny Song Wells 3 years ago

Negative experience: I wish I could give 0 star if it was the option. I don't normally post things like this in social media unless it gets really bad... Annette Kelleman swimming school - seriously since the new management kicked in everything gone so messy no proper communication with 6-7 years royal customers about permanent swimming lessons cancelled. I have been getting SMS each week kids swimming lessons been cancelled. So thought at first must be alot of teachers getting sick in this winter weather. But it was ongoing for like 6 weeks and each week same msg - lessons cancelled. No other comments. I tried to call them but on hold for more than 10 mins so decided to email. They came back - under new management due to shortage staff they permanently cancelled both of my kids lessons. Apparently they emailed me. Must have gone to spam I did not get it. I asked why didnt you call? They said they called and left ONE voice mail? I DID NOT Get it. They definitely did not do that. Also if they had time to msg me each week about class is cancelled why didn't they msg me to call them back? Now they are asking as the previous management did not leave kids swimming level data we have to come and get new assessments? Seriously? We started kids swimming since they are 6 months old. Every week. For past 6 years.... I think this is it... We are not going there never ever and if you are ever thinking about taking your kids there don't even bother. They are absolutely TERRIBLE!

Tu Nguyen 3 years ago

Positive experience: There is no make up lesson here. If your child missed a lesson they will not be charged provided you provide them with a medical certificate, which can be a drain to the health and Medicare systems. The shower system is a hit and miss and it can be cold for a child to take a shower here at times. The instructors here however are calm, patience and encouracging to the kids.

vincenzo pontrandolfo 3 years ago

Negative experience: rip-off small crowded and unfair.. you cancel your membership and you still have to pay for a month.. when I signed with them they said that I'll have 3 sessions with the trainer for free, but every time they booked a day they cancelled due the trainer's day off. soo unprofessional, don't waste your time and money.

Ng Ann 3 years ago

Negative experience: Terrible service since July 2022 when council runs the pool. No instructors and still charge to our account and even triple charge. When I called asking for the explanation, no one is being responsible there and no one can answer why they charge my account a huge amount of money (equal to over 6 weeks of lessons) The manager is not there whenever I called. How can we give our kids to those unreliable team.

Fantastic experience: I love coming here great staff ,always helpful. good hydro pool for my rehab. Improved a lot since Inner West Council took over. Nice Cafe clean pool and shower area . Just update that hot water system please . Fantastic instructors. patient and tolerant life guard's.

Positive experience: We normally swim within the City of Sydney, as this was a change to the Inner West. Our experience at the AKAC was positive. Easy and free to park outside - we were here on a hot Sunday lunch/afternoon. Staff at reception were friendly, took the time to explain the pool and layout. Pools were clean and kids pools had very warm water, but perfect for kids being in the water for a long time. Cafe was open (CoS cafes currently closed). Good and drinks were reasonably priced and good. The price was possibly a bit steep, so for a family to regularly attend you need a membership.

Thanks so much for your review Tim! Glad you enjoyed your day at Annette Kellerman.

Fantastic experience: Took my kids a couple of Wednesdays ago, and these two boys lifeguarding, couldn't of been more than 20, were excellent with the kids, being really friendly, waving to kids in the pool and answering all the questions typical kids ask. But always, walking away to their job, change a sign, tell a kid off, etc. Brilliant lifeguards, will be coming more often.

Positive experience: Solid indoor pool option - swim lanes are a bit busy in peak times and the 50/ 25 split can be a bit confusing but the 25 improves the number of lanes - reasonable facilities including toddlers and kids / hydrotherapy pool and attached gym.

Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre

Thanks Andrew! We hope to see you again soon.

Positive experience: The girls at the counter are the most friendly and supportive. Pool isn't massive but it does the job. My favourite pool in Sydney :)

Cathair Kerr 4 years ago

Negative experience: Toddler swim school is terrible. Teacher has zero interest in improving the toddlers water confidence and he goes through the motions every week. Last week he spent most of his time training another teacher, and this week he spent half the class trying to remove an old lady from the pool while finishing our 30minute class early and skipping some of items as he started late.

Jill Lush 4 years ago

Negative experience: This pool is fine when there are no school kids but when the kids arrive there is absolutely no supervision. There are lifeguards but they do nothing. There must be teachers but they do nothing. I was at the deep end swimming and exercising and suddenly there were around 15 young boys jumping into the middle of the pool where I was. Nothing was said to them. Surely they should be made aware that they are in a public place and other people are using the pool. Since when has jumping in on top of people been ok? This behaviour is for the the beach or backyard pool. Are my rates supporting lifeguards who cannot do the job?

Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre

Hi Jill, thanks for your feedback. I spoke to you in centre today at reception, and I addressed the situation with the teachers and lifeguards on deck. I asked the teachers to ensure their students are respectful to paying patrons of the pool and that behaviour will not be tolerated. I also asked lifeguards to please keep an eye on it. We do apologise for your poor experience today and hope to see you in centre again soon.

Positive experience: The staff here are friendly and do the best they can. Unfortunately the advanced adult swimming class is too short at 30 mins. This is not enough time to learn and practice the material. Management could improve this by extending the advanced adult class to 45 or 60 mins.

Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre

Hi Alex, thanks for your feedback. I will pass this onto swim school management.

Christopher Strom 4 years ago

Positive experience: If I could just give the staff a score. I'd give 5 stars! They're the most friendly outgoing team at a gym/pool ive experienced. Sometimes the pool isn't warm, sometimes it's too hot in the gym but on the whole. It's the people that count.

Don Don 4 years ago

Negative experience: Enjoy swimming through multiple bandaids and over chlorinated water. There needs to be better supervision of the correct use of the lap lanes. I’ve been kicked multiple times by other patrons who are constantly in the wrong lanes using the wrong stroke. I’ve even been kicked in the back by someone swimming breath stroke in the next lane. I’ve reported these incidents to 2 life guards who just shrugged it off because they couldn’t be bothered to act on the reports. I’ve also given feedback on the dirty state of the change rooms, the pool, and the broken hot water system and got no response from management. Swim school, squads and aqua aerobics encroach on lap swimmers and take up multiple lanes in peak hour forcing up to 6 lap lane swimmers to share lanes, where patrons don’t follow the lap lane rules. Management and more concerned in cashing in by filling the pool with classes. Do yourself a favour and don’t waste you time!

Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre

Thanks for your feedback Don Don, really sorry to hear about your poor experience.I have passed this onto our management team.

Negative experience: This tuesday, I went there with my son(2y) and my wife. When we arrived it was almost empty which was a nice surprise but the experience got spoiled quite quickly, The people working at the desk seem more interested in hugging and talking to each other than doing their job, the family changing rooms were quite dirty to say the least, and on top of it the doors could not be locked. The water was ridiculously cold. There was a young lifeguard who seemed way more interested by staring at his own reflexion (he seemed indeed goodlooking) in the window and was only stopping looking at himself to hit on his female colleague who did not seemed to be bothered by it. When I asked him if I could take one of the mat to play in the water with my kid, he told me NO (after making sure he was still looking good of course) because these mats were reserved for swimming lessons and yet there were no lesson at thistime (literrally there was just3 other people all of them swimming in the big pool doing lanes) . 2 hours after when we left the swimming classes were about to enter... Usually I feel relax after swimming but not today I was just filled withfrustation and a bit of anger. I struggled during this whole post to not write any F-word or C-word so instead I will just say that I don't recommand this place and that you should not waste your money there.

Matt Art 4 years ago

Negative experience: Terrible management and supervision! I've brought multiple issues to management over the last year and have never once received a response, I think their feedback forms are just for show. The change rooms have multiple broken fixtures and are often smelly and dirty. Life guards are too busy talking with each other and disinterested in managing the swim lanes and often leave the booms up well after lessons end. Swim school and classes take up multiple lanes during peak hours and leave very few lanes for lap swimming. This has a flow on effect where lap swimming lanes are over crowded and patrons swim in any lane regardless of the lane rules, and often life guards will change the lane rules without informing swimmers adding to the confusion. Try the new pool at Ashfield or Zetland if you want a good work out in well managed, clean facility.

Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre

Hi Matt, thanks for your review and your honest feedback. We're sorry to hear about your poor experience in centre. We haven't used feedback forms in around 4 months, we have implemented an online form, have you completed this?Do you have an email address/mobile number we could contact you on to discuss further? I love this place and have used it with pleasure for three years. I've had a membership, visit the gym and pool regularly, and think it's one of the nicest facilities in the inner west. The gym is airy and quiet with great views, the pool is fine - a bit over chlorinated but that's the nature of indoor pools with kids' swimming lessons - and bonus no sun exposure. Great floor class teachers, lovely staff all round in gym and desk, no problems with membership payments, and a nice walk through the park to get there.

Fantastic experience: Large lap pool, medium pool and baby pool with water fountain for tots, heated to 28°c all year round. Aqua aerobics and a gym, no sauna unfortunately but clean bathrooms and a new disabled bathroom with hoist. Love the feel of the atmosphere here.

Fantastic experience: Great classes for the kids, the staff are so friendly and they make it so easy. The cafe next door is nice and it’s a great place to spend the morning or afternoon. Thank you!

Positive experience: Great swimming pool and facilities, water temp was perfect and wasn't overly busy

Positive experience: The pool closes at 8 so having a workout after work and then a swim doesnt work which makes it expensive for the gym alone. Also the pool area feels like theyre saving on the heating

Negative experience: The facilities and staff are fine, but the venue suffers from extremely poor management, communication and membership flexibility. I have had several issues with my membership and would not sign up again, despite there been no other local options for me.

Negative experience: Came on Sunday morning ! The toddler pool was closed for school lessons, so my son needed to play in the baby pool , he couldn’t practice swimming skill . They should have tell us that the pool was closed so we didn’t come in . And baby pool was packed full of childrens and parents , hardly social distance . The girl in reception was so rude that’s why I checked her name is ARISA . Terrible !!!

Negative experience: The company has been taken 5 more Payments out of my account even though the membership of my daughter finished on the 27/07. The manager Rosie also confirmed that date in a email. I have been trying to talk to the manager for days and also have asked to be otherwise called back..no chance and no answer to my emails. You would think they would want to get it solved as this must be a one on thing??!

Negative experience: My experience has been the same as mosy other reviewers. The pool and facilities are nice. The administrative front desk staff are pretty hopeless. Mostly staffed by a bunch of lazy entitled millenials. They are overall pathetic, indifferent, downright rude and unhelpful. Simple things such as getting refunds or extra lessons for sessions missed due to covid is turned into an ordeal. Also stuffed up the direct debit details repeatedly. Will not be renewing swimming lessons.

Positive experience: Facilities are run down and dirty, floors are gross. Admin is slow, responses slow and mistakes (esp with payment) sometimes occur. Staff are generally friendly but lately, this new batch of ppl working there are not that great. Bring back the old staff! And the teachers are a hit and miss - some are passionate, keen and really good with kids, pushing them to do their best, others seem bored and are just going through the motions.

Fantastic experience: Very close to where we live at stanmore. A quality facility, clean and good shower area. $8.5 for adult entry to the pools. All pools are indoors. One big pool and two small children pools. It closes late too which is nice. Heaps of families and kids around. We enjoyed ourselves here.

Negative experience: Keep your children away from here. 2 times I had strangers come and touch and fondle my child. This centre did nothing. There response was to get security to threaten to punch me and then ban me from the centre. KEEP YOUR CHILDREN AWAY FROM HERE
